Located in Mihonoseki Town, Shimane Prefecture, Butsugiji Temple is a historic site near Miho Shrine. To reach it, you pass through the 'Aoisekidatami Street,' named for its blue hue that intensifies when wet with rain. The temple is believed to have been established approximately 1,200 years ago. It served as a temporary residence for Emperor Gotoba and Emperor Godaigo when they were exiled to Oki Island, making it a place of significant historical importance. Within the temple grounds, the Dainichido (Treasure Hall) houses the oldest Buddha statue in the San'in region, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Additionally, the temple is home to the grave of Kichisaburo, the lover of Yaoya Oshichi. After Oshichi was executed in Edo, Kichisaburo embarked on a pilgrimage to pray for her soul, a story that has been passed down through generations. The temple retains remnants of the Edo-period pilgrimage paths, preserving the atmosphere of that era. We went to Miho Shrine in Mihonoseki Town, Shimane Prefecture⛩️ Mihonoseki Town is located on the eastern end of the Shimane Peninsula, close to Tottori Prefecture. Mihonoseki Town is a cape town surrounded by the sea on three sides, and the origins of the Izumo mythology remain. Mihonoseki Shrine is located in this town, where the beautiful sea welcomes you. This place is located in the beautiful and crystal clear Mihonoseki Bay and the port scenery where the scent of the sea wafts. This place enshrines "Mihotsuhime no Mikoto" and "Kotoshiro-nushi no Kami", affectionately known as Ebisu-sama. Both gods have a deep connection with music, and they regularly hold memorial services in the shrine grounds. We went to "Yushien Garden" located on Daikon Island in Shimane Prefecture 🚗💨 This place is one of the largest pond-style Japanese gardens in Sanin, decorated with flowers and greenery of all seasons, and is especially famous for its peonies. In the indoor garden "Peony House", you can enjoy the "king of flowers" all year round, and exhibitions by top artists from Japan and abroad are also held every year! When I visited, there were 100 varieties of colorful roses on display, selected by Rose Ambassador Sakurako Yagira, who is originally from Shimane Prefecture and currently lives in Paris. According to Japanese mythology, Susanoo-no-Mikoto, who defeated the fearsome Yamata-no-Orochi, was united with Princess Kushinada, celebrated as a maiden of beauty, at this very site. This legend has made the shrine famous for blessings in marital harmony and matchmaking. Within the shrine grounds, there is a monument inscribed with Japan's first waka poem, composed by Susanoo-no-Mikoto after defeating Yamata-no-Orochi. This poem is said to have inspired the shrine's name. Deep within the shrine grounds lies "Sakusa-no-Mori," the central area where Princess Kushinada sought refuge from Yamata-no-Orochi. Here, you’ll find "Kagami-no-Ike" (Mirror Pond)🪞, where she is believed to have reflected her image. This pond is used for fortune-telling to predict the timing of good relationships, attracting visitors from all over Japan🔮. To perform the fortune-telling, gently float a special paper on the pond and place a 10-yen or 100-yen coin on top. If the paper sinks quickly, it indicates that a good relationship will come soon; if it sinks slowly, it suggests a delay. Additionally, if the paper sinks nearby, it signifies a connection with someone close, while sinking farther away indicates a bond with someone distant👀. If the paper sinks within 15 minutes, it’s considered quick. Mine took about 20 minutes—it requires patience!😅 The paper sinks smoothly into the pond, so when you visit, be sure to try this unique fortune-telling experience😉. Right next to the pond is "Tenkyou Shrine," dedicated to Princess Kushinada. Located in a lush hilly area overlooking Lake Shinji, it is an all-weather theme park that can be enjoyed all year round, with two bird greenhouses and a flower exhibition greenhouse, as well as other facilities connected by covered corridors. 💐 The park is home to many birds from all over the world, and you can see owls up close! It's rare to see an owl, so it was a rare opportunity to be able to observe one up close. 🦉 There are also bird feeding and petting corners at each spot, making it a great place for bird lovers. 😆 Various show events are held every day, and when I visited, an owl show was taking place! The hotel is located on the shore of Lake Shinji, famous for its whitebait fishing, and is close to Matsue Castle and the Bikan Historical Quarter. The room was kept clean and very relaxing. It also appears in the myths recorded in the oldest historical books in Japan, the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, and has a mysterious atmosphere. 👀 In the myth, Izanagi-no-Mikoto was in love with his late wife Izanami-no-Mikoto and passed through this place to visit her in the underworld. However, the appearance of the deceased Izanami-no-Mikoto had changed completely and there was no sign of his beloved wife. Surprised, Izanagi-no-Mikoto shook off the pursuing Izanami-no-Mikoto and the underworld army and returned to this world with his life. Matsu City is awesome for the ancient heritage. No many tourism during the winter break. everywhere is quiet and peaceful. Btw, most sightseeing spots have discount for foreigners. It’s welcoming foreigners. Yet, since it is new year break, many shops are closed. I came for Kiyonori Kikutake’s library and 武道館. But they were closed for the new year break.
