Elevate Your Tea Experience: Discovering Maokong in Taipei 🫖

Maokong, Taipei: A Tea Lover’s Escape Above the City
If you’re in Taipei and looking for a break from the city’s buzz, Maokong is the perfect getaway. Just a short ride on the Maokong Gondola, and suddenly, you’re high above the skyline, surrounded by misty mountains and rolling tea fields.
Yes, I took the glass-bottom gondola—a little nerve-wracking, but absolutely worth it for the panoramic views. Within minutes, the city noise faded, replaced by fresh air and the quiet rustle of trees.
At the top, the pace slows down. I wandered the Zhangshu Trail, where the only sounds were birds and the occasional breeze through the trees. Eventually, I settled into a traditional tea house with the perfect sunset view. Sipping on a delicate Tieguanyin tea set, I watched the sky melt into shades of pink and gold—no rush, just pure relaxation.
Maokong isn’t about checking off attractions; it’s about slowing down, breathing in, and enjoying the moment. Whether you’re a tea lover, a nature walker, or someone who just appreciates a stunning view, this is one spot in Taipei you don’t want to miss.

Take the cable car to Maokong, Taiwan
Take the MRT brown line to the end of the line at Taipei Zoo, then walk to Maokong Gondola Station, which will pass the zoo entrance. But never mind, we'll take the gondola to the top first, and on the way down, we'll stop at the Taipei Zoo Gondola Station and walk in.
The gondola is quite hot at first, but after passing the turns, it's probably a cool mountain stream, and the gondola swings.
When we reached the top, it started to rain, so we stopped to eat some omelet and green tea ice cream. The ice cream was soft and melted quickly, making our hands dirty. 😁 The restroom is right at the gondola station.

Eyes of Maokong
We rode the Maokong Gondola on our last night in Taipei. After visiting the zoo next door, we went to the gondola station and tapped in with our easy card, which automatically gives a 20NT discount. There was an additional discount for rides up after 4pm, so our first journey up only cost 30NT. We rode the crystal cabin (aka “Eyes of Maokong”) which has a transparent bottom. The ride to the top took about 30 minutes, and we caught the beautiful sunset.

A Wonderful Day in MaoKong Taipei
We took the Maokong Gondola to head up to the top of the hill. Along the way, we enjoyed the beautiful lush greenery. Maokong is well known for its tea plantations, just like Cameron Highland in Malaysia. Many people like to have a cup of tea at the cafe or tea house here. It's peace and tranquillity. We had a delicious meal at the food court there. The Oyster omelette and herbal pork ribs soup were so tasty. Great for the cold weather. At night, the scenery was stunning. The city lit up beautifully.

Just a short ride from Taipei Zoo via the Maokong Gondola, this charming hillside village is famous for its high-mountain oolong tea and lush surroundings.
The gondola ride itself is a highlight, especially if you choose the Crystal Cabin with a glass floor—perfect for thrill-seekers and photographers alike. Once at the top, you’ll find cozy teahouses overlooking the valley, offering a chance to sip freshly brewed tea while soaking in the tranquil scenery.
Walking trails like the Tea Promotion Center Path and Zhanghu Trail offer easy hikes with rewarding views, and on clear days, you can even see the Taipei 101 tower in the distance.
Pro Tip: Visit just before sunset to enjoy golden hour light, then stay for evening tea with city lights twinkling below. Bring a light jacket—it gets breezy up there!
