The Designed Organ of the Lausanne Cathedral
The Lausanne Cathedral stands at the highest point of Lausanne’s Old Town. Overlooking the City of Lausanne, the Cathedral enables a view of the Lake and the Alps afar as well. Its long history furthermore provides a vantage point of spiritual and cultural significance.
The Cathedral was constructed during the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1275, Pope Gregory X and Rudolf of Habsburg consecrated the cathedral. In 1536, it became a Protestant cathedral during the Reformation era. Pierre Viret, the first Reformer of Lausanne, has studied alongside John Calvin. Following the adoption of Protestantism, the formerly very ornate Cathedral suffered from Reformist iconoclasm.
I have little understanding of the architectural and interior features of the Cathedral, but I did notice the beautiful windows with colorful panes. The decorated windows depict the “medieval view of the world arranged around the figure of God the creator.”
The organ of the Lausanne Cathedral is itself worthy of a visit. A product of organ builder Fisk, an American company, the organ prides itself in 7,396 pipes, 5 keyboards and pedalboards, and 2 consoles. Four styles of organ building are present: French classical and symphonic, and German baroque and romantic. Giugiaro, the Italian designer known for Ferrari and Maserati cars, designed the case of this organ. The design symbolizes an angel with spread wings. As such, this organ is the first organ in the world that was designed. Last, but not least, the organ inaugurated in 2003, and the Cathedral holds concerts periodically. Twenty-five recitals coincide with the Christian calendar.
Today, the City of Lausanne is perhaps the best known for the Lausanne Movement of 1974. It is a contemporary movement in world evangelization. Billy Graham initiated the first Congress. Delegations from around the world still meet periodically for the International Congress for World Evangelization, where they pray and discuss strategies for world Christian missions.

Helen Yu (Chestnut Journal) Cheese with Hints of Flowers at Gruyère
Gruyeres (pronounced gree-AIR) is a town about an hour northeast of Lausanne. It is famous for its cheese, made at La Maison Du Gruyeres.
Every cheese starts with the cows that make the milk. The milk farmers of Gruyeres graze their cows in the meadows of Swiss Alps at high altitude. The cows feed not only on the green pastures, but also on the floral growth there, such as lavender. As such, their milk comes with its own special aroma. This source of milk guarantees the quality of the Gruyeres cheese.
The economics of cheese-making at Gruyeres goes like this. A cow eats 100kg of fresh grass and drinks 85 litres of water to yield 25 litres of milk, which it produces morning and evening. The cows are milked by machine to ensure its purity. There are checks on acidity and germs. The hard cheese of Le Gruyeres is made from natural unpasteurized milk.
Each 400 litres of milk will turn into 35 kg of cheese. Overall, 2,200 milk producers deliver 345 millions litres of milk to the cheese-makers. This would become 870,000 wheels of Gruyeres cheese.
Cheese-making is a traditional industry in Switzerland. The region in which the cows are raised, the milk is sourced, the cheese is produced and matured is a seal of craftsmanship. The process of production is fiercely regimented. After all, it becomes a tradition only because it is tried-and-true.
The milk is heated at 32 degrees Celsius. Then the cheese-maker adds a natural starter, which coagulates the milk. When the milk is coagulated, it is sliced up. Then it is kept at 57 degrees Celsius to firm up. The critical technique is for the cheese to retain its elasticity and consistency without breaking. The mixture is pressed for 16 hours. During this time, it is turned regularly. The juice (whey) comes out. The cheese is kept in a salt bath for 24 hours. Then it is placed in a cellar, with small amount of ammonia for it to age and ripen. Five months later, a crust will form. That would be the time that the cheese sells in the market. The cheese can continue to age beyond five months.

The Saddest Stone in the World in Lucerne
The dying lion conveys such powerful emotions that no explanations are necessary. But perhaps the historical context of the monument helps in order to understand it better. Bertel Thorvaldsen was a famous Danish sculptor born in the 18th century. He designed the dying lion. Lukas Ahorn hewn this rock relief by hand in 1820-1821.
The lion, known as the Löwendenkmal, commemorates the Swiss mercenary guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution. They were the guards for Louis XVI at the Tuileries Palace, after Louis XVI retreated from the Palace of Versailles. Some died during the battle. They were out of ammunition and seriously outnumbered by the Revolutionaries. Some died in the massacre that followed. Still some died in prison.[2]
The Latin phrase above the rock, Helvetiorum Fidei Ac Virtuti, means “To the Loyalty and the Bravery of the Swiss.” The names of those who died and survived are also memorialized here.
Mark Twain has praised the Löwendenkmal to be the “most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.”

Have the most fun at Titlis
#Winter travel destination
The summit of Mount Titlis, which is 3239 meters high, we came on a snowy day to have fun playing with Snow Toys. We have to get off at Trubsee Station. In addition to having fun with many activities, there are also Eskimo houses to see.
** To get to the summit of Titlis, you have to take the train and get off at the station. From Engelberg train station, walk out to the post office (Die Post). There will be signs showing the way. Cable car station to Titlis. There are 3 levels of cable cars to the top of Titlis. The first section is a cable car that can seat 4-6 people from Engelberg – Trubsee station (various rides are at this station).
** The second section of the cable car from Trubsee station will take us up to the Stand station. It can hold up to 30-40 people.
** The third section, we have to change cable cars again to go up to the top of Titlis at Stand station. It is a rotating cable car. You can see a 360-degree view of the Titlis glacier. It takes about 40 minutes from Engelberg station to the top of Titlis.
