🥤 Warung Ekspres – Not Quite Express, and Not Quite Impressive
I recently visited Warung Ekspres in Iskandar Puteri, hoping for a comforting local meal, but the experience left me a little let down. The cafe was completely empty when I arrived after 8pm, which felt odd for a place offering Malaysian staples like nasi lemak and lontong. Though the space was clean and offered both indoor and outdoor seating, the atmosphere felt lifeless without a single other customer.
I tried a few items to get a feel for the menu. The chendol was okay—not bad, but nothing memorable either. The kaya toast, however, was a real disappointment. They used Planta margarine instead of butter, which took away the richness, and the kaya lacked the fragrant punch I expected. It tasted flat, and the bread felt like it came straight out of a supermarket loaf.
Things didn’t improve with the iced coffee, which tasted stale—as if it had been brewed hours earlier and just left sitting. The only bright spot was the iced lemon tea: crisp, tangy, and just sweet enough. Definitely the best part of the meal.
The bill came to RM33.10, which felt steep for a casual warung—especially given the overall quality of food and drinks. For that price, I expected something a lot more satisfying.
Sadly, this visit just didn’t hit the mark. Unless things improve, I’d say skip it and explore other local spots nearby that offer better taste and value.

🔥 Smokin’ Good BBQ at MEETMEAT, Iskandar Puteri
We had a fantastic time at MEETMEAT BBQ in Iskandar Puteri—this spot is a gem for Korean BBQ lovers. From the moment we sat down, we knew we were in for something special. The quality of the meats stood out right away—fresh, beautifully marbled cuts of beef and pork that were juicy, tender, and full of flavor.
What really impressed us was the tableside grilling service. The staff expertly handled the BBQ for us and were happy to adjust the doneness exactly to our liking. No guessing games, no stress—just perfectly grilled meat, served hot and crisp right off the grill.
The banchan (side dishes) were just as satisfying. Kimchi, pickled radish, bean sprouts, and other traditional Korean sides filled the table—and yes, they offered refills when we asked. Everything was fresh and nicely seasoned, rounding out the meal in true Korean style.
For the quality and service, the prices were more than fair. We walked out full, happy, and already thinking about our next visit. MEETMEAT BBQ hits all the right notes—authentic flavors, attentive service, and great value. Definitely a go-to if you’re in the area!

🦐🌅 Rustic Seafood Feast & Sunset Views at Kukup
Tucked at the southern tip of Johor lies Kukup, a sleepy fishing village with big seafood flavours and one of the most charming sunset views around.
We drove down for a late afternoon seafood feast and weren’t disappointed — think fresh prawns, chili crab, fried squid and lala cooked kampung-style in humble, sea-facing restaurants built on stilts. The vibe was refreshingly rustic — no frills, but that’s exactly the charm.
🌊 As we ate, we watched the tide roll in beneath us and caught a stunning sunset over the water. It’s moments like these that make you forget city life for a while.
📍 Getting There: Kukup is about 1.5–2 hours by car from Johor Bahru and is a popular detour for those en route to Pontian.
⸻
Pro Tips:
• Go before 5pm to secure a good waterfront table for dinner.
• Bring cash; some eateries may not accept cards.
• Wear comfy sandals — it’s a bit uneven walking on the wooden planks.

🍽️ Diverse Flavors at Makan Kitchen, DoubleTree by Hilton JB
We had both dinner and breakfast buffets at Makan Kitchen during our weekend stay at DoubleTree by Hilton Johor Bahru. The restaurant is spacious with a nice layout, offering different sections dedicated to Malay, Indian, Chinese, and Western cuisine.
For dinner, the spread was generous and had something for everyone. There were highlights like grilled meats, local dishes like laksa, and a decent seafood section. That said, while everything was good and enjoyable, it wasn’t mind-blowing. It leaned more towards variety than standout flavors.
Breakfast the next morning was consistent—ample choices from traditional Malaysian fare like nasi lemak to Western classics like omelettes, sausages, and pastries. Again, everything tasted fine but not particularly memorable.
Still, the friendly staff, relaxing ambience, and wide options made it a comfortable dining experience. Worth a try if you’re staying at the hotel, especially for convenience.

Not sure where to eat for breakfast @ JB? Just about 10min walk from CIQ, this bagel place is really nice! We ordered the smoked salmon and beef - very filling and worth every penny. The decor is rustic and aesthetic. Would recommend 👍#travel #johoreats
An absolute must to eat when in Malaysia!
Whenever you go Malaysia (especially JB for those living in Singapore), it is a must to eat at Woodfire 🪵🔥 Come with an empty stomach as the burgers are big - our favourite is the Beef Brisket, but everything on the menu is really nice! In addition, the milkshakes, fries & dips are a must to get as well. Highly recommend 👍#food #johorbaru #johoreats
