If you’re heading to the Higashiyama Zoo then you should definitely get the combo ticket to also do the sky tower. It’s a landmark of the city and you can see it as soon as you get close to the zoo, it has a very striking design and offers great views of the city and the zoo. You can take the lift to the 4th and 5th floor for the viewing floors then climb the stairs to the 7th floor for a smaller viewing deck and the restaurant (opens at 11am) Not only do you get great views of the zoo and the city you can experience the retro feel of the tower - the design is very old futuristic as if you’re in a 1980’s sci fi film. There are places to buy souvenirs, take photos and use coins to operate the binoculars. If you look very closely you can see all the landmarks of Nagoya in the distance! If you’re looking for a hotel in Nagoya and you want a great location for the best price, this is the one for you! The Vessel Inn at Sakae is super convenient with quick access to the metro and walking distance to the shopping and food districts, along with the TV tower and the Nagoya castle. The rooms are very comfortable and well thought out, with plenty of plugs and storage space. They are light and airy and I had great views of the tower! The breakfast is really good and worth getting everyday, plenty of options and a very convenient seating system. Not far from the National Kaohsuing Centre for the Arts are a couple of blocks that have been completely covered in murals, by artists from all over the world. The scale and vibrancy of the murals was a complete surprise., in this otherwise quiet and calm neighbourhood. We didn’t see anybody else walking around, and only locals going about their day to day activity. Recently, a media show is being held against the backdrop of the city wall to celebrate the end of the year and the beginning of the new year. We visited in February, and while the scenery was absolutely stunning, the swimming conditions were disappointing due to seasonal factors. 💞Reasons to Recommend: The beach itself is picture-perfect, with mesmerizing turquoise water, fine white sand, and swaying palm trees that provide natural shade. It’s a great place to relax, take a walk, or enjoy the peaceful surroundings. There are many restaurants nearby, making it easy to grab a meal while enjoying the view. Unfortunately, February is the season of waves on this part of the island. The waves themselves were not too big, but they brought in a lot of debris, including seaweed and plastic, making swimming impossible during our visit. I expected a charming Baltic capital, but what I found was a city full of energy, stunning architecture, and a vibrant atmosphere. The Old Town was like stepping into a medieval fairytale, with cobbled streets, colorful buildings, and the impressive House of the Blackheads. But just a short walk away, Riga’s Art Nouveau district amazed me with its intricate facades and unique designs. One of the highlights was the Riga Central Market, housed in former Zeppelin hangars. The variety of local foods—smoked fish, dark rye bread, and pickled vegetables—was incredible. At night, I discovered Riga’s modern side, with cozy bars and a lively music scene. Riga is walkable, but public transport is efficient and cheap. Be sure to try the famous Riga Balsam liqueur, and don’t skip the panoramic view from St. Peter’s Church. Riga may not always be on the typical Europe itinerary, but it definitely should be!
