#liverpooltrip Lytham Windmill is situated on Lytham Green in the coastal town of Lytham St Annes, Liverpool, England. It is of the type known as a tower mill and was designed for grinding wheat and oats to make flour or bran. Since commercial milling on the site ceased in 1921 the mill has belonged to the town and is operated by Fylde Borough Council, who open it to the public during the summer. The mill was built on Lytham marshes around 1805 on land leased by the local landowner and squire to miller Richard Cookson. Some of the mill's machinery, including a 150-year-old mainshaft of Baltic oak, was salvaged from other local mills. The plinth which now surrounds the mill was added later for safety reasons. The original smoky drying kiln, once adjacent to the mill, was moved to Kiln Street after pressure from well-to-do local residents in the growing town. The surrounding land was later levelled and grassed to form a ribbon green between the houses and the sea, in the middle of which stands the mill.

Surviving historical records provide fascinating accounts of each famous Brontë undertaking the task of educating the poor children of Haworth. A passionate social reformer, Patrick Brontë knew well the benefits of education for children, and strove for a number of years to establish a school within Haworth. In 1831 he was finally successful in his attempts, and raised £80 from the National School Society (a charity set up to promote Church of England Schools) towards the building of a Sunday School. The remainder of the money came from public subscription and the land donated for building by the Church Lands Trust. In 1832 the school was completed, the commemoration plaque written by Patrick Brontë himself still in place over the old porch. The Old School Room was replaced as a school in 1903, but retained its focus as a community building; being used for a variety of activities, including a gymnasium, a library, an army billet during the Second World War, and as a Youth Hostel. Today it is the key centre of the Brontë experience, easily accessible to tourists and a valuable community resource.

Patrick Brontë came to Haworth with his wife Maria and children in 1820 from Thornton. He had been offered the perpetual curacy of the church at Haworth by the vicar of Bradford in 1819. He was the minister at St Michael and All Angels for 41 years and was assisted by his later son-in-law, Arthur Bell Nicholls. The church is well visited by tourists eager to see the Brontë Memorial Chapel in the church and the Brontë family tomb where the mortal remains of all members of the Brontë family with the exception of Anne are interred. The tomb is marked by a simple plaque placed there in 1882 originally at the behest of Arthur Bell Nicholls. According to his contemporaries, Branwell would often be found holding court by the fireplace to an audience of weary travellers or locals, regaling them with his entertaining repertoire of worldly discourse & effusive prose. Other stories tell of a drunk Branwell evading discovery by his family by escaping into the graveyard and on to the Parsonage via a kitchen window along the church wall of the Black Bull. In September 1792 the Black Bull became the seat of the Lodge of the Three Graces Haworth 408, with Branwell serving as secretary at one point.
