#summerbudgettrip Irecently visited Malta and had an incredible experience overall. The island is absolutely stunning, with a perfect mix of historical sites, beautiful beaches, and charming towns. Valletta, Mdina, and the Three Cities were highlights — so much rich history packed into small, walkable areas. The architecture is gorgeous, and everywhere you go feels like stepping into the past. The beaches and the Blue Lagoon were breathtaking, with crystal-clear water ideal for swimming and snorkeling. We also took a day trip to Gozo, which felt quieter and even more relaxed than the main island — well worth the ferry ride. Food was another major highlight: fresh seafood, pastizzi, rabbit stew, and excellent Mediterranean flavors. The people were welcoming and helpful, and English is widely spoken, making it easy to get around. Overall, Malta is a perfect destination if you’re looking for a mix of culture, history, nature, and relaxation. #cityplaybook Taking a random stroll on night market, I felt sorta bored and somehow walked into a milk tea shop on the side way. It turned out to be a teahouse newly opened by one of the local tea brands. There were quite some varieties of tea base to go either “black” (pure tea) or “white” (with milk)—and with milk, you can either go with brewed tea or tea espresso as base. On the day of my visit, there’s a lady doing traditional music performance on live stream on the 2nd floor, which is quite a vibe to listen to it in a traditional seating while taking a sip of the tea.

#cityplaybook Surabaya doesn’t lack good cafes or coffee roasters. But this place feels closest to home. First, the coffee. Try their magic if you haven’t. Featuring triple ristretto shot, it has an intensity closer to what I usually have of piccolo from Malaysia (and Europe), and it’s full bodied while retaining a good bit of interesting acidity. Second, the ambience. I can’t express clearly how much I’m fond of this kinda wooden tone with lotsa window. It simply makes it a perfect ground for photography. Third, the food/cake. Food from cafe is never the cheapest, but this place balances great taste, portion and affordable cost. From the fact that i came here for three consecutive days and since i discovered this place i ditched Seniman & Little Prince (best fruity espresso in Surabaya), you know how much i loved this place.

#cityplaybook 📍Taka Upon my arrival to my hostel (De Nata and Bajo Bunkhouse) I saw this very new cafe 50m away. What attracted me in the very beginning was its impeccable view and interior design. Every single corner is photographic material. But it turned out that the coffee (their Taka blend to be specific) was superb too. A whole lot of vibrant acidity packed in each sip. The sandwich was really good too, though I find the portion too small to be completely worth the value. Another good thing about this cafe is that taxes is all included in the pricing of the menu, so you don’t have to math in your head when ordering.

But once you managed to step into it, you’d be surprised what a different vibe it packs inside. #cityplaybook This is one of the place I go so often that everybody knows me and what I would order as soon as I step into the cafe. A cup of flat white is a must because the coffee used here is not only full bodied but carries a dash of delightful fruitiness. Sometimes I would do their pesto with too, which is extremely hearty with the herbs used, then sprinkled with some good quality Parmesan. On the weekdays they have value lunch sets, which could take 4-5 ringgit off the drink. In all, I can also tell how much other customers love them too based on how often they were fully booked for private events or catering service.

#cityplaybook Empty Cup was open at a location right in front of a busy crossroad, which was deemed to have bad fengshui. And indeed all the shops opening before them didn’t manage to last. But they defied the destiny. By a lot of hard work put into their coffee, they managed to not only survive but upped their game into a coffee roastery and expanded their cafe compound. It’s now right above a car repair workshop, which means if you have to send your car for maintenance or repair, this could be an ideal place to go to while waiting it to be done. Their house blend go very well with milk, and they offer dirty latte at just the normal price of piccolo latte (instead of charging it unreasonably high like most of the other places despite using lesser milk).

#cityplaybook 📍Moyà Cafe Puchong Utama Located in Puchong Utama, this place is a hybrid between a cafe and grocery store that sells vegan related stuff. In the beginning I went there for coffee, but was impressed by the menu on which one can find many Malaysian staple food for example nasi lemak and satay. And after trying, I’ve to say it’s not just an attempt but executed very well. For all the meat items, the mushroom substitutes have good chew that resemble the meat, and the seasoning are all pretty much on point.

BUT know what? Just very recently, it opened up a new branch right at where I most often hang around, and next to another favorite cafe of mine. I feel so blessed. Now i can frequent this place almost everyday. What’s new to this branch is that it now has some hot food option and pastries on top of cakes. And the ambience is much much much better because it features super high ceiling. The only tricky part is with the car park, else I can be here all week long.

#cityplaybook BuTian, which stands for “not sweet”, features tea-based desserts that are reduced in sweetness—though I personally found them still pretty sweet. But the desserts are not only in great variety, but also in amazing taste. I particularly enjoyed the matchmisu, which is a deconstructed version of the classic tiramisu (with coffee being replaced by matcha). The different layers of flavors paired with different textures and temperatures across the dessert is awesome. The ambience of the cafe was also superb IF you’re there outside peak hours. Otherwise not only it would be noisy, but you might have to wait for hours to get in line.
