We picked up our rental car in Shiga and made our way to the Shaun the Sheep Farm Garden, nestled within the English Garden Rosa & Berry Tawada in Maibara. The buildings are meticulously designed to mirror the show’s claymation style, complete with life-sized replicas of the farmhouse and sheep barn. Despite its Golden week during our tour, there’s no crowd, maybe because of the rain too. 🐏 Clean and Pleasant Contrary to what one might expect, the presence of real sheep is minimal, which means the area remains clean and free from strong odors. If you’re heading up the Maokong Cable cars you need to check out the ‘lazy day cafe’ when you get to the top. The cafe is tucked away down some stairs that go down into the forest, under the tarpaulins is a super cute cafe. It’s run by an elderly couple who are super friendly and super proud of their store - they do a nice range of coffee, tea and cakes. I got iced coffee and an amazing lemon cheesecake, the coffee came in an adorable cat mug and they were very happy that I enjoyed myself. The cafe is sitting in the Forrest and has no main walls, it’s completely open plan and you just feel like you’re in the trees. The couple are very friendly and want to know where all their visitors are from, they’ll ask to take a photo of you and take some details for their scrap book. 🌊 One of the highlights of my recent visit to the Northumberland Coast was a stunning coastal walk to the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. The walk will take you along the breathtaking shoreline, just a few feet away from the sea as you take in the views and watch the ruined castle come into sight (Picture 1). 🏘️ I started in a quaint little village nearby, Craster, with charming holiday cottages and washed up private boats (Picture 2). If you strike it lucky you'll even see an ice cream van perfectly positioned in the village for a hot day! I then followed a scenic path along the rugged shoreline, with sweeping views of the North Sea. The sound of the waves, seabirds overhead, and the silhouette of the castle growing on the horizon made the walk truly magical. 🐑 You'll be accompanied by the sweetest and most vocal grazing sheep as the castle comes into sight - creating a beautiful backdrop for some photos of the castle (Picture 3). 🏰 Reaching the dramatic ruins felt like stepping into history-so peaceful and atmospheric, especially with the sea breeze in the air (Picture 4). After some exploration, time to head back to the village again. The sheep had positioned themselves right along the coast this time and managed to get a quick couple of poses for a photo! (Picture 5). 🍽️ Take a short trip south to Alnmouth for it's High Street with an array of local pubs and eateries. 🛌🏼 Stay in the market town of Alnwick in a fantastic B&B or Guest House - the town has everything you need. 💡 Bring sun cream on a hot day - you'll have no protection from the sun on the open coastline. Bring good walking boots to easily traverse the rocky paths. We were on our way to visit the Yutoku Inari Shrine and had to find a place for a quick lunch - ended up finding this food gem nearby by chance! There were many people there (mostly locals) but the queue was constantly moving! To add, this place serves the best udon and seafood sashimi bowl we ever had by far! They are also super generous in their portions - if you order the Seafood Bukkake Don, you'll get soooo much sashimi that you'll have a taste of some sashimi in every single bite. So good that it's definitely worth a return visit. The only downside is that you might need to have a car, we drove there and it seems pretty secluded (or maybe because we went on a Monday and everything else seems to be closed.) 📌 Arashiyama Park Kameyama District 嵐山公園 亀山地区 📍Japan 〒616-8386 Kyoto, Ukyo Ward, Sagakamenoocho, 6 When you think of Arashiyama, Chikurin🎋(bamboo forest) comes to mind first, but if you want a quiet😶 experience, definitely walk to Kameyama District. If you walk along the path that leads from the end of the bamboo forest, there are fewer people, the forest gets deeper, and it becomes a peaceful scenery like a scene from a Ghibli movie. When you arrive at the summit observatory, an open view overlooking the Hozugawa River awaits you. In spring, light pink cherry blossoms🌸 are in full bloom, and in fall, autumn leaves🍁 turn the whole world red. Especially if you visit around sunset, the forest and river bathed in sunlight create a fantastic harmony that leaves you with an indescribable feeling. I had some free time in Arashiyama, so I went up the river from Chikurin🎋 on the first day and “% Arabica Kyoto Arashiyama” on the second day. If you have time, I definitely recommend buying coffee ☕️ at % Arabica Kyoto Arashiyama and going up to the river. Why? There are no people, so it’s quiet. You have to climb some stairs, but the way up is quiet and because you go up along the river 🏞️, the way up is beautiful. I was surprised when I reached the top! I guess people don’t go up here ㅋㅋ It’s really beautiful. You can take pictures with the background📸. Compared to the bustling tourists below, there were no people. ㅋ If you want to take pictures with a pretty and beautiful background, definitely go up to the top! 📌 Tenryuji 天龍寺 📍Japan 〒616-8385 Kyoto, Ukyo Ward, Sagatenryuji Susukinobabacho, 68 I visited Tenryuji on a spring day when cherry blossoms were fluttering. I stayed in Arashiyama for 3 nights and 4 days, so I had plenty of time to see everything. But when I actually went there, I thought I could see Tenryuji, Arashiyama Park, and Chikurin all in one day. My travel order was Nonomiya Shrine > Chikurin > Tenryuji > Kimono Forest! When you go up to Chikurin, you will come out at the back gate instead of the main gate of Tenryujin. Go in there and come out the other way to the main gate. Or, you can go into Tenryuji, see Chikurin, and then come out towards Arashiyama Park. The serene garden of Tenryuji and the scenery created by the old trees were like a sumi-e painting. In particular, the bamboo forest and blue sky reflected in the lake were more beautiful to see with your eyes than in a photo. There was a long bench🪑 in front of the garden, so although there were many people, you could sit and look at the garden and watch the beautiful scene of a brief shower🌧️ falling into the garden! As you slowly walk around the inside of the temple, your mind naturally becomes calm, and it was a special time to take a deep breath and escape from your tiring daily life. It is a temple that calms your mind. Every garden is different and beautiful. 📸 Recommended photo spot: A shot with Arashiyama in the background beyond the garden! 🕰️ If you visit early in the morning, you can quietly appreciate the temple. I visited in the afternoon, but there were really a lot of people. It is so large that only the main points were crowded, but I recommend visiting in the morning if possible! If you are traveling to Kyoto, Tenryuji is a must-visit healing spot.
