Shenzhen has been my home for almost 6 years now and I honestly thing it’s one of the best untapped travel destinations out there, it is one of the most advanced cities in the world but the cost of living and visiting is still really low. It rivals the modernity and diversity of Hong Kong but at a fraction of the cost, you can even do it in a day trip from Hong Kong as it’s so close! China has opened up to tourism recently and is offering a lot of countries visa free access or extended transfer visas (Check to see if your country has been added to the list!) ⭐️ Airport - It is located to the west of the city and is on the express metro line that takes you through the main urban areas, connecting at the mega hubs of Futian & Gangxia. You can use apple pay, Qr code or use cash to buy tokens ⭐️ Train - Shenzhen is connected to the rest of china and also HK via high speed rail, they depart and arrive at Futian, or Shenzhen North station - both of which are connected to the metro. Foriegners can use these services, book via trip and scan your passport at ticket gates - you no longer need to collect paper tickets! ⭐️ Accommodation - Hotels in Shenzhen are a lot cheaper than Hong Kong, but if you want to travel on a lower budget I’d advice the local chains such as Atour, True Go & Vienna hotels - they can cost as little as $30 per night and offer basic but comfortable rooms in good locations. (All close to metro) ⭐️ Travel - This is where China really excels, the metro in Shenzhen is one of the biggest in the world and one of the cheapest. You can travel anywhere in the city for less than $2 and the trains are every minute or so, with full air conditioning and most stations have toilets / wifi. Didi is the ride hailing app and that is also very cheap, around $8 for a half an hour taxi ride ⭐️ Food - There is so much cheap food here you will be spoiled for choice, the older areas of Dongmen & Laojie in Luohu offer some of the best authentic street food and canteen style restaurants. Then areas such as Nanshan, Chegongmeow & Fumin have lots of food streets with every style of Chinese food from all 6 major regions. Dishes can start at $1 and portions are generous. ⭐️ Attractions - Shenzhen is a super green city and most of it’s main attractions are based around nature and the outdoors, especially hiking, cycling and beaches - all of which are free! Other than that the few exhibits and galleries that there are are super cheap! 📍This is a beautiful location in Guangzhou. You can explore the ancestral hall, winding alleys, intricately decorated pagodas and even spot some peacocks in the gardens. You can also learn about how enter the pagoda and ask for blessings using the water at the door. 🏛️The architecture is colorful and eye-catching. I spent so long just staring up at intricate patterns on the ceilings as everything is so detailed. You can also get more bird’s eye views by going up the pagoda staircases that overlook the area. 🐠The ponds add serenity and the bridges and archways bring a romantic and nostalgic ambiance of life once upon a time. 🛍️Along the way, you can also enjoy purchasing nice stationary in the cute shops. ⛲️If you enjoy history, cultural immersion and a moment away from the city, Yuyin Garden is the perfect choice! ✨Recommendations:✨ ❣️My favorite room was the red bedroom. Shenzhen maybe famous for its brand new malls and high end stores, but if your better doesn’t stretch to that ( like mine) you should head to Dongmen. Located in Louhu it’s one of the oldest shopping districts in the city and caters a lot more to locals, so prices are a lot lower and there’s a lot more choice than the malls. Dongmen has amazing local clothes and shoe shops, particularly good for low price basics - stock up on all your smalls. I also love it for the homewares and basic cleaning essentials, a great place to stock up your pantry! The Ancestral Temple (Zumiao) is located in the center of Foshan City, and is a museum of ancient Lingnan architecture, Taoist culture, traditional Foshan folk culture and martial arts culture. The carvings and sculptures in the Ancestral Temple are the finest examples of Lingnan architectural art. The Ancestral Temple gave insight into Foshan's past. Unlike most other modern urban parks in China, the Dafushan Forest Park comes with some interesting legends. It is said that, during Panyu’s time as the capital of the Nanyue Kingdom, the state minister of Han dynasty, Lujia, came to Panyu to persuade Zhao Tuo, the King of Wu, to agree to subsume the Nanyue Kingdom under the Han dynasty’s rule. It was here in Dafushan Forest Park that the messenger became very thirsty. Legend has it that, when his horse stomped the ground, a fresh water source appeared right away to quench his thirst. Therefore, the “Horse Drinking Spring” stands in the western part of Dafushan Forest Park to this day. It is said that Lujia, as a state minister of Han dynasty, “dafu,” was buried here as well. Thus the name Dafushan (Dafu Mountain) for this park. Its name bearing the word “forest” does suggest the scale of Dafushan Forest Park. The park area is enormous with 580 hectares. In the park are 9 mounts of varying heights, the highest mountain is the Dawugang at 226.6 meters high. The park was open to the public in 1999 after the first phase of construction was completed. Needless to say, such a large area of natural environ would be perfect for a whole lot of natural species. Before being turned into the park, the area featured relatively few species of trees, such as Pinus massoniana and Acacia Mangium. In the Panyu District of Guangzhou lies the 800-year Shawan Ancient Town. The ancient town began its first chapter during the Song dynasty. Cobblestone streets meander through the village, laying the groundwork for the area’s antique Lingnan architecture. A leisurely stroll in this ancient town will take about two hours. If you would like to visit the museums as well, then allow for more time. The town was very crowded as we visited on a Saturday. The atmosphere in the ancient town was festive and business appeared to be booming. Of the He surname, the He Grand Ancestral Hall is a major landmark in Shawan Ancient Town. The very first He Ancestral Hall was built during the Song dynasty, in around 1275. It took 40 years to build it, and it was meant to be grand even at its very inception. He Renjian is the first generation of He ancestor that settled down in Shawan. With the purchase of a large track of land in here by He Renjian, the He surname became one of the major clans amongst the Panyu five (the other four being Wang, Li, Li and Zhao). Throughout its long history, the He Grand Ancestral Hall had experienced a few destructions. Yet the descendants had never let the significance of their ancestry slip through the cracks of history. Of the three major reconstructions, the current ancestral hall was rebuilt during the Kangxi reign of the Qing dynasty. It furthermore underwent a major restoration in 1986. The He Grand Ancestral Hall’s grand architecture is itself of significance. The structure is of five hall, five bay layout, which, even amongst the myriad ancestral halls in the Lingnan area, is in the scale of being majestic. Other standard features of Lingnan architecture are carried through to a grand scale as well, including the 112 stone and timber pillars, the intricate clay sculptures that adorn the rooftops and the eaves etc. The Wen Feng Tower A structure of the 60th year of the Kangxi reign (1721), Wen Feng Tower is a fengshui architecture that was attached to Liugeng Tang. It also served as the fengshui tower for the whole village. The three stories tower gives home to Wenchang, Guandi and Kuixing god statues, each god taking up one floor. The theme of security and protection has been prominently featured in the diaolou’s that I have visited in Kaiping. But Nan Lou is perhaps the only diaolou that came with an official history in the defense of the nation. From afar, the Nan Lou stands tall and proud as a testament of war history in a dedicated garden space. While its appearance does not stand out from the rest of the diaolou’s I have seen, it breathes history in a wholly different manner, as shown in the permanent scars on its exteriors. These are the bullet holes inflicted on the building by the invading Japanese troops of World War II. The moving heroism of the Situ brothers that defended this tower is what makes the Nan Lou a must-see diaolou in Kaiping. Like so many of the diaolou’s in Kaiping, Nan Lou was meant to guard against bandits. Built in 1912, Nan Lou stood at a location of critical strategic value, ashore the Tanjiang River and the neighboring road network into Chikan. The Situs built this 7-story reinforced concrete tower. Nan Lou was fortified. On each floor there were gunholes, observation decks, machine guns and searchlights. Situ Xu, leading six other members of the Kaiping Situ Self-Defense Forces, raged a staunch resistance here in Nan Lou against the onslaught of the Japanese into Chikan. Situ Xu was an overseas Chinese himself. He lived in Nanyang (Southeast Asia) for a long time, and returned to his homeland specifically intending to organize the resistance movement against Japanese invasion. He set up the Kaiping Situ Self-Defense Forces, who managed to stall Japanese advances in this area by winning a few battles in 1944 and 1945. On July 17, 1945, the Japanese forces had closed in on Chikan. They surrounded this area with additional troops arriving on the Tanjiang River. They ambushed the Nan Lou at night. It comprehensively showcases the history and culture of Liwan, an old district in Guangzhou. The second phase of the Liwan Museum features a reconstructed Xiguan Mansion as its main building. This structure retains a symmetrical layout centered around a main hall, incorporating courtyards, skylights, and open-air corridors to facilitate natural ventilation, keeping the entire space pleasantly cool. Inside the museum, many historical artifacts from old houses are on display, such as a porcelain pillow from the late Qing Dynasty. During summer, sleeping on this type of pillow provided a refreshing and cooling effect. The surface of the pillow is adorned with intricate floral and bird patterns, with delicate and fluid lines. The area of Nantou in Shenzhen is known for ancient settlement. As one of the 24 defense outposts set up for maritime defense during the Ming and Qing dynasties, Nantou Ancient Town has a decorated past that is very much present today. The artefacts excavated in Nantou suggests the existence of settlement as far back as the Three Kingdoms period, some 1800 years ago. The city that has continued to this day was built in the 27th year of the Hongwu reign (1394) in Ming dynasty. The Nantou Ancient City was part of the efforts by China’s imperial government to ramp up maritime defense in Shenzhen during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Nantou served as one of the 24 defense outposts along the mountain ridges of Lingnan (southern China), and the Dapeng Fortress was another one of the 24. Of these defense outposts, only Nantou and Dapeng have survived the passage of time. During the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty, Nantou was the seat of administration of the Xinan County. There is significance in this fact because Hong Kong itself was considered part of Xinan County during much of the imperial times. Therefore Hong Kong is featured in quite a number of historical exhibits in Nantou. During the early Qing dynasty, many Hakka people settled down in this part of Shenzhen. Due to its coastal location, Nantou’s people engaged in all sorts of maritime trade, including fishing, oyster harvesting and salt drying. When Canton became the only trading port with foreigners in China during the Qing dynasty, Nantou experienced a flourishing development of trade, owing to the rise of the Thirteen Factories in Guangzhou. The South Gate (Old Gate) of Nantou was built during the early Ming dynasty and it did undergo restoration during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Lying at its foundation are granite slabs. There are brick layers covering the granite base. A brick structure on the second story served as the watchtower. The Interlaken OCT Hotel is a four-star hotel and this was our destination for this weekend getaway. Located up the mountain that hovers over the sandy stretches of Shenzhen’s coastline in Dameisha, the Interlaken OCT Hotel presents something of quite a different nature from that of the Dameisha Beach. As its name suggests, the hotel is part of a resort area that mimics the environ of Switzerland. The OCT East (East Overseas Chinese Town), covers an area of 9 square kilometers at Da Mei Sha of Shenzhen, is the national ecological tourism demonstration district and the international tourism destination, at an investment of 3.5 billion Yuan by the OCT Group. It is a combination of two theme parks, three scenic towns, four resort hotels, two 18-hole golf courses, Hua Xing Temple and Tianlu mansion etc. When I arrived at the hotel, I was truly impressed by the beautiful reception hall, with a ceiling a few floors high, and enormous decorative fixtures that did, in my view, create an impression that we were somewhere in a foreign land. It was worlds apart from the scene in Dameisha Beach, and I did appreciate that sense of relative serenity in the mountains. The owner of Liyuan was Xie Weili, who had spent significant time living in the United States. The name of the property came from the last character of its owner’s name, Li. Construction for the property began in 1926 and it took ten years to finish all the structures. The buildings in Liyuan came in the style of the Chinese eclectic. Some of them are properly Diaolou’s, serving both residential and defensive purposes. The Yupei Villa is a tower type watchtower villa. As Xie Weili named this building with his own childhood nickname, it is a tower of love as the memorial built for Xie Weili’s second wife, Tan Yuying. Tan Yuying was a very talented woman that died giving birth the year after she was married to Xie Weili. The tower is four story high and open for visits. Its location being in the garden, it impresses visitors with a kind of atmosphere that is calm, artsy and pleasing. Italian décor lines the exterior of this tower. The general areas of tour interest in the Liyuan Garden are the Villa Zone, with clusters of structures with especially beautiful interiors. It is worth going in for a look. The day of visit was January 10, 2025. The foliage in Lianhuashan Park are full, its colors bright, and all around beautiful. There are other features in the park, including a statue of Deng Xiaoping, who was being memorialized in this park for his contribution to the economic development of Shenzhen, but I did not see it. Lianhuashan Park, meaning the “Lotus Mountain,” acquired its name due to its location. Nestled within the seven hugging mountains shaped like a blooming lotus, the park features an exceedingly large land area with the substance and form of a well-manicured natural environ. I took the subway and arrived at the northwestern gate of Lianhuashan Park. As soon as I entered the park, I felt this sense of openness and wholesomeness right away. The park features well-maintained, broad and paved pathways, with many beautiful park installations. The trees were tall and grand, and you could see right away that this environment was a result of careful urban ecological planning. Trees of one kind lined whole sections of the park. Then you would see other species in the next section. Chenpi, the dried mandarin peel, is a specialty of Xinhui for as far as history remembers. In this part of China, the chenpi is so well-known that it is considered one of the three treasures of Guangdong, alongside with old ginger and straw. At first glance, these three things seem rather insignificant to be called the treasures of a province long reputed for its prosperity and vibrant cultural life. Yet all three have been critical ingredients and materials in Cantonese culture, especially in its cuisine. Chenpi is particularly known for its fragrance. Adding just a small piece of chenpi introduces a unique flavor and aroma in tea and food. Chenpi also comes handy in Chinese medicinal application. The Chenpi Village of Xinhui is a trading market for tourists. Chenpi, its literal meaning in Chinese is “aged skin.” The first order of judging the value of a piece of chenpi is the ability to discern between the fragrance, color, appearance and texture of the dried mandarin peel. In terms of fragrance, the good Xinhui chenpi is not supposed to be fruity. If you smell a strong, unitary smell that reminds you of the sweetness and sourness of fruit, beware. It is supposed to smell aged, “chen,” with hints of citrus, but a complex and rather subtle aroma. The older the dried mandarin peel, the chen fragrance is the more pronounced than the fruitiness. At the Chenpi Village I finally tried chenpi coffee, which I did not have a chance to do so in my last trip to Jiangmen. Because of its touristy nature, the Chenpi Village has all sorts of chenpi by products to offer. Besides the famous chenpi coffee, there is chenpi ice cream (as in ice cream scoops, not soft serve), and chenpi candies. Although I had hoped for taking cultural photography at the Chenpi Village, the people there said the drying season has long been over. Shamian is a sandbank island on the southern edge of Liwan District in Guangzhou. Situated on the riverside of the Pearl River, the area was, for centuries, a foreign trading post. Shamian’s role as the conduit of trade spanned the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. It was also a place of leisure and tourism as well. In the more recent 19th century, Shamian was a location of heavy foreign presence. Many countries have set up their consular offices in this area. In fact, the Polish Consulate of Guangzhou is still in Shamian today. Needless to say, it was also a prime location for business operations, such as foreign banks and trader offices (the “Hongs”—like the Thirteen Factories). This would be the appropriate moment to bring back the memory of the Thirteen Hongs of Canton. This history is closely related to Shamian as we know it now. In 1856, the Second Opium War broke out. Great Britain launched extensive firepower against Guangzhou. This touched off a wave of local protests that resulted in the Thirteen Factories Enclave being burnt to the ground. The Second Opium War would last till 1860, during this time the British had taken control of Guangzhou. Given Shamian’s historic role as a trading post, it came as no surprise that Shamian was eyed by the foreign powers as their foothold in Guangzhou. Shamian became a concession area for Great Britain and France beginning in the 11th year of the Xianfeng Reign (1861). The British abandoned the plans for rebuilding the Thirteen Factories Enclave, and instead looked to build Shamian. Allow for at least two hours to walk through all the streets in Shamian. The Hehu Xinju is in so many ways representative of Hakka culture in both Shenzhen and in China. In this tour of the enormous Hakka residential complex, I learned about the significance of the Luo family, who established its prominence in Shenzhen since the Qianlong era of the Qing dynasty. The walled village is a feature for Hakka architecture. It serves, first and foremost, defensive purposes. It also prescribes an approximate square or rectangular layout for the village’s residential life. Meaning “crane lake villa,” Hehu Xinju is of the Luo clan of Hakka people. The walled village consists of two wall enclosures. There lie three main courts in the main axis separated by courtyards, and two rows of houses on the side. The ancestral hall lies at the very center of the whole village. Hehu Xinju spans a large area of 25,000 square meters. There are more than 300 chambers in the village. Construction for Hehu Xinju began during the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty (1736-1795), and it was completed during the 22nd year of the Jiaqing reign (1817), apparently the joint effort of three generations for five decades. The ancient city gate greets visitors with a typical pagoda top with a tiled roof and an arched entrance beneath. The Gangkeng Ancient Hakka Townlet as it stands now have a history of about three hundred years. The villagers of Gankeng were farmers, and besides agriculture, they also relied on their handicraft of the “cool hat” for a living. As the economy of southern China changed over the decades since the 1950s, the villagers have also begun to work in factories, but Gankeng remained a poor community. The basic facilities of water provision and plumbing were only available here in the 1990s. With Overseas Chinese Town Holdings Company taking over the revitalization of the area in the 2016 (more below), Gankeng finally saw better days. A leisurely walk in Gankeng will take at least 2-3 hours, especially during the summer. There are many old structures that are exceedingly picturesque. Feel free to get a little lost in the many alleyways, in which you will see many smaller old structures there that are perfect for picture-taking. The landscaping is also well done, especially in the pond area. The Gankeng Museum was delightful and that was quite surprising to me. The exhibits were well-arranged and the narratives were educated and sympathetic to the Hakka story. The gun tower at Gankeng is a typical structure in many of the ancient villages of Shenzhen. It is built of concrete, with four floors and served the primary purpose of defense against bandits. The villagers also used it for educational purposes. The Gun Tower of Gankeng is attached to the “pai” houses, meaning a row of houses. The Qing dynasty era Yamen old fort stands beautifully restored at the mouth of the Pearl River. It has a proud history to speak of, and a sense of antiquity breathes through the fort at the near-dusk hours. The opening hours of the Yamen Fort is Tuesdays to Sundays 9:30am to 4:30pm. It might open on a national public holiday but you should inquire before going. There is no admissions fee for the Yamen Fort. It takes just about less than half hour to see the fort itself and to photograph it. The earliest military installations at the Yamen Fort took place during the 57th year of the Kangxi reign (1718) in the Qing dynasty. The full facility came into place in the 14th year of the Jiaqing reign (1809). Yamen acquired its Chinese name due to the Yashan Mountain in the east and the Tangmingshan Mountain in the west. At this location, the imagery is that of a half-open gate (men) at the Yashan Mountain, thus Yamen. The Yamen Fort is located on the eastern shore of the Yamen mouth of Pearl River. This is one of the eight mouths of the Pearl River, where it meets the South China Sea. As such, this is a strategic location for defense purposes.
