Forest Bamboo Kyoto: A Journey Through Stillness
#summervacay #bambooforest #travel #staycation #naturalwonders #thingstodo #kyoto
Long before the first light kissed the rooftops of Kyoto, I was already on my way—chasing silence, chasing stillness. The famed bamboo forest of Arashiyama was calling, and I knew it had to be greeted not with noise, but with reverence.
From Kyoto Station, the train journey was smooth and direct, but once I stepped off and reached the edge of the village, the real experience began. A quiet, meditative walk unfolded—each step taking me further from modern life and closer to a dream made of swaying green stalks.
The approach through the village was more than a path; it felt like a slow unfurling of time. Stone walls, sleepy homes, the scent of morning dew. Then finally, the entrance to the bamboo grove appeared—not with grandeur, but with quiet dignity.
Stepping in, I was wrapped in a cathedral of green. Tall stalks reached skyward, leaves whispering stories overhead. The early hour gifted me a version of the forest untouched by crowds—just me, the soft rustle of bamboo, and the diffused morning light filtering through like a blessing.
It wasn’t just a walk; it was a pause from everything else. A moment that asked me to feel, not just look.
The Lush Greens of Arashiyama 🌳
Arashiyama does not just have a beautiful town, the bamboo forests and the river front, but the villages and forest walks all around are truly spectacular. If you’re looking to find some inner peace among the bustling chaos of Kyoto then you should consider spending a day or two exploring the hills around this area #japantrip #japan #kyoto #kyototrip #arashiyama #bambooforest
Enchanting Arashiyama – Kyoto’s Tranquil Wonderland
#cityplaybook
If Kyoto is the cultural heart of Japan, then Arashiyama is its peaceful soul. Tucked away on the western edge of the city, this scenic district feels like stepping into a living painting — serene, green, and timeless.
What truly struck me in Arashiyama was the sense of calm that washes over you the moment you arrive. The Bamboo Grove is the star attraction, and it’s every bit as magical as you’ve imagined. Walking through towering stalks of bamboo, with sunlight filtering in and the wind creating a gentle rustle, felt otherworldly — like I had entered a sacred forest. It’s one of those rare places that makes you slow down and just feel the moment.
But there’s so much more to Arashiyama than just bamboo. The Togetsukyo Bridge, arching gently over the Katsura River, is a stunning spot at any time of day — especially during cherry blossom or autumn foliage seasons when the surrounding hills burst into color. I took a leisurely boat ride down the river, passing beneath fluttering cherry blossoms and watching herons skim the water — it was pure peace.
Best time to visit? Spring (late March to mid-April) for sakura and soft pink skies, or late autumn (mid-November) for fiery maple trees. Early mornings offer the most tranquil experience and fewer crowds, especially in the Bamboo Grove.
Helpful details:
Location: Arashiyama, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto 616-8384, Japan
Easily reached via JR Saga-Arashiyama Station
Don’t miss: Tenryu-ji Temple, Iwatayama Monkey Park, and matcha ice cream from a local vendor!
Great for photographers, couples, nature lovers, and those seeking a break from city bustle
Arashiyama is a gentle reminder that beauty lives in stillness — a place where nature and tradition dance in quiet harmony.

A Symphony of Colors – The Lonely Souls in the Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple
If the 1,200 rakan statues that stand at the Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple represent the Buddhist followers’ celebration of their faith in life, then the 8,000 stone markers at the Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple are the proper tribute to death. I saw an unintended and unlikely juxtaposition between the two temples that presented the occasion for a philosophical appreciation of life, coming full circle from living to death.
Like the church graveyards of medieval times in European countries, the temples of Japan were often sites of burials as well. The Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple, however, originated from the burial of the dead. During the Heian period, the Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple had an eerie past as a site of open burial for those who had no family or friends who could oversee a proper rite for their passing. At some point in history, the remains were buried in a simple manner. The stone pillars memorialized the spirited, as grave markers.
The temple began when the famous monk Kukai (774-835 A.D.), who was the founder of Shingon Buddhism, established a temple in this area about 1,200 years ago. Even at the temple’s inception, it stood for the remembrance of the dead as the site of prayers for the departed.
About 100 years ago during the Meiji period, there was effort to collect all the stone markers in the area. People placed them in a dedicated space, and they lit candles as an act of worship. At Sai no Kawara, 8,000 stone grave markers stand. There is a festival of candle lighting annually to these lonely spirits at Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple. At the Sento Kuyo festival, innumerable candles are lit amidst the grave markers in Sai no Kawara in late August each year for this event, a tradition that came from the Meiji period.
Also at the temple is a beautiful bamboo grove pathway that has very few visitors.
Finally, the Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street just off of this temple features old traditional Japanese houses called machiya’s. They often come with pitched roofs and the structures are built of wood. They are now mostly shops and businesses.

Lost in Arashiyama’s Magical Bamboo Forest!
Walking through Arashiyama Bamboo Forest was truly magical. The towering bamboo stalks reached high into the sky, creating a green tunnel that seemed to stretch forever. As I walked along the path, the sunlight filtered softly through the leaves, making everything around me glow in shades of green. It was like stepping into another world.
The gentle rustling of the bamboo in the breeze was calming, and every few steps, I had to stop and take it all in. The views were absolutely stunning. I couldn’t resist capturing photos at every turn; the sight of the endless bamboo rows was mesmerizing.
Being there, surrounded by nature’s beauty, felt peaceful and refreshing. Arashiyama Bamboo Forest isn’t just a place to visit; it’s an experience that stays with you. It’s a must-see for anyone who loves nature and a bit of magic in their travels!

Find Yourself Amongst the Bamboo
Traveling in a foreign country can sometimes lead to getting lost, especially when you don't speak the language. However, this shouldn't discourage you from doing it. You've got to look at your travels through an adventure lens.
We took a taxi to this bamboo forest in Moganshan. Once we had spent the day hiking through the thick bamboo and observing the gorgeous scenery, we were ready to head back to our hotel. However, we couldn't find a taxi! Eventually, we made our way deeper into town where we were able to find a bus. We had no idea where this bus was going, but we got on it anyways. It's a continuation of our adventure! We got to see so much more on this bus than we would have if we had just found a taxi to take us back to the hotel.
What could have been a disaster ended up a fun-filled afternoon with new friends, all because we chose to see our travel through an adventure lens. How do you see your travel?

Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
As I entered the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The towering stalks of bamboo formed a natural canopy, filtering the sunlight and casting a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The gentle rustling of the leaves was like music to my ears, and I felt myself getting lost in the beauty of the forest.

Zhejiang is very famous for its outstanding Mountain View’s and bamboo forests.
Best part about trips there is it’s just 4-5 hours from center of Shanghai.

Pleasant weather and stunning mountain scenery.
In summer while most of cities in China like Shanghai are suffering from heat, Zhejiang area is still pleasant.
It’s one of the best places to visit not only in summer, but also spring and autumn.

Nanshan Bamboo Sea - Liyang - Changzhou
Nanshan Bamboo Sea - Nestled in the center of the Yangtze River Delta, where three provinces Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui border with one another, is a bamboo forest called Nanshan Bamboo Sea, which is a national reserve. It occupies an area of 2,500 hectares.
The bamboo forest is largely unknown to tourists, as the region, a national economic center from 2,000 years ago, boasts too many places of historical interest developed a long time ago. The travel guides' omission of the bamboo forest makes it an ideal fairyland to escape to.
The reserve consists of several valleys and peaks, among which the 500-meter Wudi Peak is the highest in the delta region, covered with dense bamboo forest. The Wudi Peak is accessible through an 800-meter ropeway or a meandering mountain path. It takes about 12 minutes to reach the top of it by ropeway, and one-and-half hours on foot.

Hiking in snowy Moganshan Mountains.
Getting There - We used a private tour company from Shanghai to Moganshan
Attractions - The bamboo forest and the snow mountain.
Hotels - It was a day trip but there is quite a few home stays in the area for accommodation.
Food & Restaurants - Local Chinese restaurants in the neighbourhood.
A very great experience of being in the bamboo forest 🌳 . A great experience to admire the nature and the snow mountains. The tour was planned by a private travel agency. They treated us to a local Chinese meal 👌 and after that we proceeded to our hike. The snow mountain was so beautiful 😍 and it also was my first time seeing and touching some snow ❄️

The Bamboo Village
A beautiful and well maintained bamboo park, true to it's name. Its to my surprise that it also offers kids interaction & activity park like a mini funfair, such as rabbit park, which sometimes also attract adults too like me 😝 A great place for a little family day out over the weekend, the flowers and garden are very well kept and trimmed. There are 3 types of eateries offered which are the food court, a high class luxury restaurant with a view and a hanging bird's nest concept restaurant where you'll dine with a view of the luscious greens of 'Dusun Bamboo'. A place I'd recommend for small families and who wants to spend good quality family time in Bandung 🎋🌼💐🍂🍃 #solstice #urbanexplorer #summervacation #hiking #hikingtrails #bambooforest
