#cityplaybook 🇹🇭Samui Seascapes🇹🇭 Our 2nd stop is One of Koh Samui’s most attractive temples, the Wat Plai Laem. This extremely colorful, fairly new temple was completed in 2004. Although some of the buildings like the ubosot are in traditional Thai architecture, most of the complex is build in Thai-Chinese style. The Wat Plai Laem temple houses two giant, colorful statues that will immediately catch the eye. A very eye catching statue is that of the fat, laughing Chinese Buddha. In Chinese culture, a fat Buddha represents wealth and prosperity. This very impressive statue is 30 meters high and painted in expressive colors like red, white and gold. Guanyin is revered in much of East Asia, in Thailand she is also known as Phra Mae Kuan Im. It’s a carb-lover’s dream come true! 🥞Aside from the impressive spread on the buffet, there is also a tempting “breakfast specials” to indulge in. I couldn’t resist trying their signature Namu Pancakes which were fluffy perfection. And The best part? You can keep ordering as much as you’d like!(so also had their Smavotoast🥑🤭) 🍩 Of course, I had to save room for some delectable desserts too. We then walked some more to find some food and saw The Pizza Company, so we had food here which were very delicious and some drinks at Baan Coffee before getting some snacks at 7-11 to bring back. Noticed that the road was quiet and it being a Sunday, many restaurants were closed. This beloved spot attracts both locals and tourists, offering a wonderful selection of treats, including their famous apple pie, scones, and signature egg tart. The cafe is beautifully designed, featuring bright interiors adorned with vibrant flowers that create a cozy atmosphere. It’s clear that the owner has a fondness for cats, as adorable cat figurines can be spotted throughout. The design incorporates plenty of greenery, with the standout feature being the magnificent persimmon tree at its center. Unique mug-shaped chairs add an interesting touch to the decor, and there’s a private room available for gatherings, surrounded by the inviting common areas. Then the modern temple was established in 1910 and was originally located at a different location. At this time, the temple was known as Gakhwangsa. It was then finally moved to this location in 1937. This temple is one of the most important Buddhist temples in South Korea, we saw people praying at the temple and also just sitting down to bask in the atmosphere. I loved the display of the colorful lotus lanterns around the temple. It usually lights up at night too! There is also the 500-year old Lacebark Pine Tree which features a distinctive and beautiful brown bark. These types of trees grow and reproduce slowly making them very rare and important to the history of Korea.
