When I stepped into Okayama, I found more than a stop between Kyoto and Hiroshima—I found a peaceful city steeped in history, folklore, and some of the most breathtaking gardens in Japan. This underrated gem offered a slower pace and unforgettable moments.
My journey began at the majestic Okayama Castle, often called the “Crow Castle” because of its striking black exterior. Though partially reconstructed, its elegance and history still shine. From the top, I admired sweeping views of the city and the adjacent Korakuen Garden—one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan.
Korakuen was a dream. Winding paths led me past tranquil ponds, tiny tea houses, manicured lawns, and arched bridges. It was quiet, reflective, and exactly the kind of nature-meets-culture blend I travel for.
Okayama is also known for the legend of Momotaro, the Peach Boy. Everywhere I went—from sculptures to sweets—there were nods to this beloved folk hero. It gave the city a touch of whimsical charm, especially fun if you're traveling with kids.
I took a side trip to Kibitsu Shrine, known for its long, atmospheric wooden corridors and peaceful forest setting. Later, I rode a local train to Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, with its preserved white-walled warehouses, canals, and charming shops—it felt like a walk back in time.
