Wakkanai, Japan – The Soul of the North
#cityplaybook
#localguides #familytrip #postandearn
At the very tip of Hokkaido lies Wakkanai (稚内) — Japan’s northernmost city — and one of the most breathtaking, underrated travel destinations I’ve ever experienced. It’s where the sea, sky, and solitude meet to create something raw, quiet, and unforgettable.
When I visited Wakkanai, I wasn’t expecting to be so deeply moved. I came in late summer, chasing cooler weather and open skies. What I found was a town filled with stories, wind-swept cliffs, and the kind of stillness that lets you hear your own thoughts again. It felt like standing at the edge of the world — literally and emotionally.
The highlight of my visit was standing at Cape Soya, Japan’s northernmost point. Looking out toward the distant silhouette of Russia’s Sakhalin Island, I was overwhelmed by the vastness of the ocean and the strange, comforting isolation. The wind never stops here, and it adds a powerful energy to the place — like nature’s way of reminding you that you’re alive.
Another unforgettable stop was Cape Noshappu. If you visit at sunset, the sun sinks into the Sea of Japan with fiery beauty, and you might find yourself completely alone, watching the world quietly fold into night.
Best time to visit?
Visit August to early September for mild weather and clearer views. Winter brings harsh cold, but also stunning snowscapes and aurora sightings on lucky nights. For a truly unique experience, time your trip with the Wakkanai Minato Matsuri (Port Festival) in early August.
Getting there:
Take a flight from Sapporo or Tokyo to Wakkanai Airport, or ride the scenic Soya Main Line train all the way up. The journey is long — but absolutely worth it.
Bonus Tip:
Try the local seafood — especially uni (sea urchin) and hotate (scallops). It’s fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared in even the simplest roadside diners.

Into the Earth’s Breath – Exploring the Fiery Spirit of Noboribetsu

If Japan has a gateway to the underworld, it’s found in Noboribetsu, Hokkaido’s most famous hot spring resort. I wasn’t prepared for how alive the earth would feel beneath my feet here—steam rising from jagged rocks, sulfur dancing in the air, and bubbling pools hissing from deep within the earth. Jigokudani (Hell Valley) is as dramatic as it sounds, and walking through it felt like stepping into a myth.
My journey started with a hike through the volcanic valley—wooden walkways took me past gurgling mud ponds and bright mineral springs that turned the earth shades of orange, red, and grey. The landscape was surreal, like nature’s version of a fantasy novel. The sound of escaping steam and the smell of sulfur were constant reminders that I was walking over something powerful.
Afterward, I soaked in one of Noboribetsu’s legendary onsen baths—a deeply soothing experience. The waters, rich in minerals like hydrogen sulfide and iron, seemed to pull stress from every part of my body. My favorite was Dai-ichi Takimotokan, a historic bathhouse with panoramic views of Hell Valley as you soak.
What surprised me most was how peaceful the town was, despite its fiery name. Streets are lined with charming ryokans (traditional inns), footbaths open to the public, and quirky statues of oni (Japanese demons), who are said to guard the springs.
Best Time to Visit:
Autumn (late Sept–Oct): For colorful foliage contrasting with steamy volcanic terrain.
Winter (Dec–Feb): For snowy landscapes and cozy, steamy onsen bliss.
Helpful Tips:
Bring a towel and swimsuit (some baths allow swimwear).
Don’t rush—spend time walking the forest trails beyond Hell Valley for quiet nature immersion.
Try local dishes like soba and Hokkaido’s famous dairy-based desserts.

Hakone Escapes – Where Nature, Art, and Hot Springs Embrace You

Hakone was the perfect antidote to Tokyo’s rush—a peaceful retreat where nature, art, and culture blend effortlessly. Nestled in the mountains of Kanagawa Prefecture, this charming town is known for its hot springs, scenic views of Mount Fuji, and its rich cultural treasures.
My journey began aboard the Hakone Tozan Railway, Japan’s oldest mountain railway, which winds through lush forests and steep hillsides. It felt like a dream as the train curved past waterfalls and bursts of hydrangeas. Once I reached Gora, I soaked in an onsen with outdoor baths that opened to misty mountain vistas—pure bliss.
But Hakone isn’t just about relaxation—it’s a cultural gem. I spent hours at the Hakone Open-Air Museum, where Picasso’s bold colors stood beside whimsical sculptures scattered across grassy lawns. It was both playful and profound, with the fresh mountain air adding to the experience.
One of my favorite moments was cruising Lake Ashi on a pirate-themed boat, with Mount Fuji peeking through the clouds behind the torii gate of Hakone Shrine. The contrast of sacred stillness and dramatic scenery was unforgettable.
For a deeper dive into history, I followed part of the old Tōkaidō Road, where travelers once walked between Kyoto and Tokyo. The Hakone Checkpoint offers a glimpse into the Edo period with reconstructed gates and museums.
Best Time to Visit:
Spring (March–May) for cherry blossoms.
Autumn (October–November) for fiery foliage and crisp air.
Tips:
Buy a Hakone Freepass for access to transportation and discounts.
Try black eggs (Kuro-tamago) boiled in Owakudani’s sulfur springs—they say each one adds 7 years to your life!
