Jiufen is a seaside mountain town made famous by the Studio Ghibli film - spirited away. It is famous for its old tea houses and narrow wishing streets, particularly the main ‘old street’. You’re able to experience traditional Taiwanese tea culture and get a glimpse of life outside of the main cities. There are lots of great places for souvenirs and tea to take home in little packs, they’re also lots of tea houses with amazing views out over the coast. There are also quite a few smaller temples if you wander the roads that lead down the mountain, I found some of those had the best view points of the surrounding areas. Luckily we were able to drive with friends but there are lots of bus routes from Taipei and surrounding towns. If anyone in your family is interested in trains and railways then this is the place for you! It’s a super cheap museum that you can get to with the National Museum Combo ticket - it is also within a 10 minute walk of the main museum building. Housed in a beautiful old red brick building this museum houses the history of the railways of Taiwan, from the iconic steam engines of the past right upto the high speed rail line that connects Taiwan’s biggest cities. The building is beautifully refurbished and has many exhibits within the rooms, including some mock train stations complete with ticketing offices and platforms. The highlight for sure is the huge model railway that reflects Taipei main station around the 1970’s and 1980’s - it operates display shows at intervals throughout the day. The detail is incredible as it has working railways, accurate streets of Taipei and tiny little people dotted about this huge model world. It also mimics a full day and night city and it’s beautiful to see this huge model city light up when it turns to night. There are some outdoor exhibits too at the back along with a very nice gift shop, it was a lot of railway memorabilia and a lot of locally produced gifts and souvenirs. I found my best keyrings, postcards and fridge magents here! I was really impressed. Its super cheap to enter, especially if you do the Museum combo ticket - it’s about a ten minute walk from the main Museum in Peace Memorial Park. Everyone loves dinosaurs and you’ll also love the price of this museum! For less than £1 you can take a look around the Natural History Museum in Taipei, Taiwan - housed in an old bank branch from the Japanese era. It’s located directly across the road form the Taiwan National museum and can be done on the same ticket if you buy the four museum combo ticket! (Totally worth it) The museum is focused around a hall of life sized replica skeletons of some the most infamous dinosaurs. It has lots of information in bilingual presentations and also offers audio guides for a small fee. The museum is small but well laid out, with a one way system to tour the exhibits. The building has been beautifully restored and there’s an exhibit on the banks history and the restoration project to turn it into a museum. They also have a really cool vault experience to show you how the bank stored all its valuables back in the day. There’s a nice gift shop, cafe and some really helpful staff throughout. Very satisfied with 3 nights! A luxurious stay where you can experience the "comfort" of Japan in Taipei Last month, I stayed at the "Okura Prestige Taipei" during my trip to Taipei. I stayed at this 5-star hotel, which is just a short walk from MRT Zhongshan Station and has excellent access, for 3 nights (about 35,000 yen per night, breakfast included). 🌟Recommended points I felt during my stay🌟 🛏Clean and elegant rooms The spacious rooms have a modern Japanese atmosphere and a calming atmosphere. The bath is Japanese-style with a deep bathtub and a bathroom TV. I was able to relax and heal my travel fatigue. 🍽The breakfast buffet is surprisingly luxurious! The lineup includes Japanese, Western, and Chinese dishes, and the Taiwanese cuisine is also authentic. The made-to-order beef noodles and xiaolongbao are especially delicious and make you want to eat them every morning! 👘Many Japanese staff members Their Japanese language skills are perfect, so you can feel at ease even if it's your first time in Taipei. I was also happy to be told about nearby gourmet recommendations (famous soy milk shops and night markets)! 🏙 The location is extremely convenient. During our visit to Taipei Zoo, one of the highlights was exploring the African Animals Area—a sprawling section that truly brings the African savannah to life. I was thrilled to see towering giraffes, white rhinoceroses, and zebras up close. Each zone felt thoughtfully designed, offering a glimpse into the diverse habitats and wildlife of Africa. Right next door was the Madagascar Animals Area, and it felt like stepping into another world. Ring-tailed lemurs darted around playfully, while Coquerel's sifakas impressed us with their acrobatic leaps. We had an enjoyable day at Taipei Zoo, even with the rainy weather during our visit. Getting there is convenient—just take the Taipei Metro (MRT) to Taipei Zoo Station on the Wenhu (Brown) Line, and the entrance is only a short walk away. The zoo is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and tickets can be purchased either at the gate or online in advance. Arriving early is recommended, as the zoo spans a vast area with plenty of exhibits to explore. Taipei is a vibrant city and one I’ve visited many times. No visit to Taipei is complete without heading up Xiangshan mountain to get a snap of Taipei 101. On my most recent trip to Taipei, I wanted to seek out some alternative Taipei 101 viewpoints. Be sure to hit them up on your next visit to the island: 1️⃣ Xingshan Park Take the metro to Songshan at the end of the green line and walk about five minutes to the beautiful riverside park. If you go in the evening time you’ll be able to pick up a bite to eat at Roahe Street Food Market. 2️⃣ Lane 112, Anhe Road Take the red line to Xinyi Anhe and walk about ten minutes. The road is long and narrow and you have can get beautiful shots of Taipei 101 surrounded by local life. 3️⃣ Yuan Shan Scenic Area Get off at Jiantan station on the red line and follow the signs to this spectacular viewpoint. It’s really cool up here as you can see airplanes take off and land at Songshan Airport against the backdrop of the city. 4️⃣ Holin Coffee, Xinyi District This one is a bit of a walk from Taipei 101 station on the red line but it’s so worth it! There are few tourists in this area and it’s a great spot to people watch! 5️⃣ Huian Park This can be paired with the Holin Coffee stop as they are only five minutes apart. Another lesser known viewpoint, Taipei 101 towers over the downtown residential buildings. 6️⃣ Xiangshan Mountain The most famous Taipei 101 viewpoint in Taipei. It gets very crowded here and this is no surprise. I reccomend visiting close to sunset to enjoy the view during daylight and night hours. 🏨 Tired after exploring the city? Yes read it right, a fine art museum for less than $1! In a world where everything is getting more and more expensive by the day this is something that really surprised me, the price has stayed the same for years and the gallery is still as amazing as ever. There are fixed galleries in the lower levels and rotating exhibits depending on the time of year. The galleries are well laid out and spacious with good WiFi; air conditioning and toilets. It’s also very familiar friendly with lockers and luggage storage at the front, a separate children’s art area and outdoor exhibits for the kids to explore. The building itself is also beautiful and very Bauhaus in style - the floor to ceiling windows around the sunken garden is a big hit for me. This was my second time here As I enjoyed it so much in my last visit to Taipei - I had to come back! TOASTERiA cafe is a great brunch spot that has a menu like no other, it’s Mediterranean inspired and it has such amazing choices there’s something for everyone. They are famous for their shakshouka and it looked incredible, but this time I had to check out the Philly cheese steak panini - and it was worth it! Food is cooked to order and uses lots of fresh ingredients, it tastes so wholesome and filling and there are so many flavours going on. The portions are big and it’s worth the price, there is decent seating but it does get busy. I was alone around opening time but it filled up fast. If you’re heading up the Maokong Cable cars you need to check out the ‘lazy day cafe’ when you get to the top. The cafe is tucked away down some stairs that go down into the forest, under the tarpaulins is a super cute cafe. It’s run by an elderly couple who are super friendly and super proud of their store - they do a nice range of coffee, tea and cakes. I got iced coffee and an amazing lemon cheesecake, the coffee came in an adorable cat mug and they were very happy that I enjoyed myself. The cafe is sitting in the Forrest and has no main walls, it’s completely open plan and you just feel like you’re in the trees. The couple are very friendly and want to know where all their visitors are from, they’ll ask to take a photo of you and take some details for their scrap book. If you are in Taipei and you want to check out the museums you need to check out the 228 peace park while you are there, it’s beautiful and it Is free! The National Museum Of Taiwan and the Natural History museum are bases at this park, along with the peace memorial museum - all three can be visited in the same day. The park also has a lot of sculptures, modern art and of course the national peace memorial itself - giving the park it’s name. There are also some pagodas, locomotive engines and an old Japanese Radio tower - left over from the war. All of these little elements give the park such a quirky atmosphere, everywhere you look it’s completely different - there really is something for everyone. I got there for about 7:30 grabbed a coffee and wandered around waiting for the museums to open at 9AM! Get off the metro at Taipei University Hospital station and follow the signs! Taipei is one of my favourite cities in Asia and this viewpoint is the best way to see this incredible metropolis. It’s a small hike up elephant mountain with various lookouts along the way, to get incredible views of the city and its iconic landmark - Taipei 101. The climb can be quite steep and it does get quite busy and also very hot during summer! I aim for about 8:30 am as it’s nice and cool, not so busy and the weather is calm. Follow the signs for the peak (it’s the shortest journey) there are longer hikes around the base and the rear of the mountain. When you get half way there’s a raised viewing area for great views of downtown, when you get higher and pass the famous elephant rocks you can get 360 views of the whole city. Totally worth going all the way up! I try and aim for a 10am finish as there’s an amazing arabica coffee shop at the base that opens at 10am. There are also public toilets located at the base across the road from the coffee shop. It’s a known landmark so easy to get to by foot / taxi / bus. Or if you want to take the metro get off at Xianghan and follow the signs ( the last stop on the red line / after Taipei 101) It’s also incredible at night but very busy! especially around sunset. Sisinan Village Museum, also known as “Sisinan Village” (四四南村), is a cultural attraction located in Taipei’s Xinyi District, near Taipei 101, and is just a 5-minute walk from MRT Taipei 101/World Trade Center Exit 2. If I remember correctly, walk up through Gate M2, it's the closest. The price is 50 TWD per day per bag, but it only opens at 8 pm.** - Shanhaiguan Tea House (Hot Pot shop) - Sunny Room (Accommodation, can sleep 6 people) DAY 2 - Houtong Cat Village (It was raining, couldn't walk around, hardly saw any cats) - Keelung - Zhengbin Port Color House (The riverside is beautiful) - Heping Island Park (It was raining like a storm, umbrellas were broken) - Ximending - Xin Mala Hot Pot (I had to eat it anyway. One of the most-climbed mountain in Taipei would be the Elephant Mountain, known as 象山. It is a must-visit if you would love to view the 101 building from a high vantage point. The climb was relatively acceptable for myself, I do not usually exercise or climb mountains and I did this hike with a pair of slippers. Of course, the Jadeite Cabbage and the Meat-Shaped Stone draw the crowds, but the real magic is found in the quiet corners: ink paintings with brushstrokes lighter than breath, bronze vessels etched with forgotten rituals, and a timeline that humbles everything outside its walls. Outside, mist clung to the curved rooftops. Inside, I wandered slowly, as if walking through the memory of an empire. Getting there: Take MRT Tamsui-Xinyi Line to Shilin Station, then hop on Bus R30 or 255 to the museum entrance.
