Kurashiki, the old town of Okayama, is a must-visit destination
Kurashiki is an old town in Okayama that blends Japanese and Western influences. Despite being an old town, it is well-maintained and is a highly recommended place to visit. Along the streets, you can find various foods to try. The town is also famous for its denim products, including denim shirts, jeans, and even cute denim dolls. If you have a Kansai Wide Area Pass, you can travel here for free.
[Okayama] This is the place to see silver grass fields and the sunset!
Okayama Trip 𓂃𓈒𓏸✈
Despite being a famous spot for Japanese pampas grass in Okayama, it's a hidden gem with few people around.
It's a bit of a walk from the parking lot, so it's recommended to dress warmly.
It seems like we were a little early in October.
The pampas grass hadn't yet bloomed,
but I was impressed by the expanse of Japanese pampas grass and the view from the mountain!
The timing of the sunset was especially great...!
The time spent staring at the sunset was so luxurious.
The view from the observation deck was also nice, and there were few people, so I could take my time taking photos.

Okayama castle and around 🏯
Okayama is still beautiful on a cloudy day. Trams and buses in this prefecture are full of cute designs. Each one has a different design. It's fun to sit and watch. 🍵
From Okayama Castle, walk across the bridge to Okayama Korakuen Garden. 🍁
Before reaching the garden, we stopped by Hekisuien Cafe 📌. There are both savory and sweet dishes. You can rent a duck boat. There are souvenirs. The view is beautiful. The grilled purple sweet potato dango is very delicious. 🍡
Every year at the end of November, there is an illumination event every year. But the night we went, it was raining. So we missed it. 🥹
We stayed at The OneFive Okayama, which is close to both the tram station and the castle, only 500 meters away. The room is quite small but convenient.
The castle entrance fee is 300 yen.

Venice of Japan - Kurashiki Bikan
Kurashiki Bikan Historical District is a well preserved historical area in Kurashiki, which is 20 min by train from Okayama. Kurashiki Bikan is also known as the Venice of Japan, as the area features a canal network surrounded by cultural heritage.
The buildings in this area are largely former storehouses which have been rejuvenated to become specialty stores, restaurants/cafes and museums.
Notable attractions include the Ohara Museum, which is Japan’s first museum for western art, featuring works from artists like Monet. You can also take a short 20 min river ride (like in Venice), with tickets easily available at the tourist information center; do grab your tickets early as the number of spots are limited. There are also many restaurants and cafes where you can chill and people-watch.
This area is also famous for its denim, so you will be able to find interesting denim products such as denim kimono. There are even denim-coloured ice cream and buns!
All in all, Kurashiki Bikan makes for a good day trip out from Okayama.

Autumn Magic: A Colorful Escape at Okayama Korakuen Garden!
#asiatrip
Visiting Okayama Korakuen Garden in autumn was like walking into a living painting! The trees were bursting with shades of red, orange, and yellow, creating a magical carpet of leaves everywhere I looked. It felt like nature’s best show, just for me.
I strolled along the winding paths, taking in the colorful trees reflected in the ponds. Every corner was a new picture-perfect view. The crunch of leaves under my feet and the crisp air made the experience even more special.
There were cozy tea houses where I sipped warm tea while admiring the breathtaking scenery. Autumn in Korakuen Garden is pure magic, with every red and yellow leaf adding to the beauty. It was an unforgettable nature escape!

Black Castle Wonder: My Adventure Through Okayama’s Samurai History!
My trip to Okayama Castle was amazing and so much fun! The castle, known as the “Crow Castle” because of its black exterior, looked both cool and majestic. As I walked up to it, I felt like I was stepping back into the time of samurais and lords.
Inside, there were fun hands-on experiences, like trying on a samurai helmet and armor. I felt like a real warrior and, of course, took some awesome photos! The top of the castle had a fantastic view of the city and the nearby Korakuen Garden, which looked so beautiful from above.
After exploring, I strolled down to the nearby garden, soaking in the peaceful scenery. My visit to Okayama Castle was the perfect mix of history, fun, and great views. It’s a day I won’t forget!

The most Satisfying Soba in Okayama
We found this corner building in Okayama selling soba that was so attractive and decided to give it a try. In fact the restaurant’s name in Japanese is “ Noodle God of Wheat”!
There was a short line when we arrived and we waited about 15 minutes to get a seat. As usual, tickets can be bought at the machine near the entrance. We ordered the most attractive soba with 4 slices of pork lining the rim of the bowl. It just looked so good that we didn’t want to dip our chopsticks into it! The thick chicken broth was rich and full of flavor in every way while the soba- made in house - was cooked to the perfect texture! The gyoza were also fantastic- crispy on the outside and , juicy inside. Just delicious!
Definitely recommending this place for your soba crave when visiting Okayama ! Do note that their lunch session ends at 14:15; and there is a long 3 hours break before dinner session starts. Parking is available just across the road.

Getting to the art Island of Naoshima
#summerbreak
If you enjoy contemporary art, definitely make a visit to Naoshima. Naoshima is an island in the Seto Inland Sea, and can be easily reached by ferry. There are two ports with direct ferry to get to the island - via Uno which is a town 1 hour south of Okayama ; or from Takamatsu- which is a city in Shikoku.
The ferry time from Uno to Miyanoura is shorter- only 20 minutes (Takamatsu which takes 50-60 minutes), and there are more departures each day.
You can reach Uno by train, and just walk 5 minutes ahead toward the pier. Alternatively you can drive to Uno and park at one of the parking lots nearby. The daily parking rate could be from 500-1000 yen.
The signages to Naoshima pier are very visible, and the ticket office is just in front of the pier. You can buy ticket from the window or from the machine up to 10 minutes before departure. of course it is better to get there a little earlier just in case there is a long line .
The ferry is large and comfortable. it is even painted with the signature red dots by Yayoi Kusama. You will definitely not miss the red pumpkin as soon as you arrive to the Miyanoura port. The lower level of the ferry is for cars, while the middle is air-conditioned with comfortable seats. The upper deck is great to enjoy the sun and breeze as the ferry sails to Naoshima.
There is also a service from Uno to Honmura on the east side of the island - but with only 5 sails per day.

Travel back in time - Kurashiki Bikan Quarter
#summerbreak
The Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is in the center of Kurashiki- Okayama Prefecture in Japan. It is about 10 minutes walk from the Kurashiki train station and is less than 1 hour from Okayama by car.
The historical quarter is known for the white washed wall houses and willow trees than lined the Kurashiki River- dating from the Edo period ( 1603-1876). Many of the houses were previously warehouses and now converted to become shops, restaurants, and cafes. As Kurashiki is also considered as the birthplace of Japanese denim, it is worthwhile to stroll through the many boutiques that offer the wide collection of the district’s indigo products.
Another highlight was the Ohara Museum which was Japan’s first museum of western art - including works by Monet, Toulouse- Lautrec amongst others.
The walk along the canal is beautiful both day and night. The gentle wind, flowing willow and sound of the canal brought feelings from the past. There are also rickshaws and boat rides for visitors to have fun on a clear day. Definitely a good place to spend a day while in Okayama.

Okayama Kurashiki Scenic Area
The Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is located in Kurashiki City in the southern part of Okayama Prefecture. The area where the Kurashiki River flows was prosperous due to shipping during the Edo period. The white-walled warehouse buildings with traditional Japanese style are recognized as a "Traditional Buildings Preservation Area" by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. The local textile industry was once prosperous, and even now, almost all of Japan's student uniforms are produced here.
When visiting this place, it is recommended that you buy a boat ticket to experience a human-powered boat trip, admire the weeping willows on both sides of the river, and enjoy the nostalgic and oceanic scenery that travels through time and space. You can also visit the Ohara Museum of Art, owned by a local celebrity, which houses many masterpieces by masters such as Monet, Picasso, and Mahler!
In addition, the Kurashiki Ivy Square in the area is also worth a visit. It was converted from the Kurashiki Textile Factory and retains its red brick exterior. It houses a pottery workshop, a hotel, a memorial hall and other facilities.

VIA INN Okayama Hotel (1 minute walk from Okayama Station!)
The VIA INN Okayama Hotel, where I stayed at the end of 2023, is located directly next to Okayama Station in Japan, within a 1-minute walk. It is small and beautiful, clean and tidy, and the service is friendly. The station is just downstairs, and transportation such as trams and buses are super convenient. There are also various food, souvenir shops, department stores, drug stores, and clothing stores around. There is a special streetcar outside the station, and you can reach the famous attractions Okayama Castle and Okayama Korakuen in ten minutes. Reasonable price, highly recommended 👍💕 #okayama #岡山 #VIAINN岡山 #岡山城 #岡山後園
