After a 15-minute ferry ride from Kagoshima city, we arrived at Sakurajima, a volcanic spot where small-scale culture continues to this day. We then headed to Karasujima Observatory, one of the observation points located there. The lava flow from an eruption in the Taisho era formed a lava field, and this place was built on top of that hill. The magnificent view of Sakurajima spread out before us, and below us we could see the life-nurturing Kagoshima Bay, and in every direction we looked, there was a picturesque view. There was also a stone monument at the observation point that read, "Torishima is below this." When I looked it up later, I found out that this place was originally a separate island floating on the sea, and that the name of that island was Karasujima. It's amazing that it was originally a separate island! The lava flow from the Taisho era eruption swallowed up Torishima, and it became part of the Sakurajima landscape we see today! Sakurajima volcano in heavy rain and haze 🌋😅 Sakurajima is one of the most famous active volcanoes in Kyushu, Japan. The other one is Aso Volcano, the hometown of Kumamoto Kumamoto Exhibition. It is definitely a must-see attraction in Kagoshima and Kumamoto! It is very simple to get to Sakurajima Volcano. You can take a boat to the island from the boat pier in the city. There are boats every 15 minutes, and then take a special sightseeing bus for a tour, which takes about half a day. It’s the rainy season now, and we all know that it’s difficult to see Sakurajima volcano from a distance, but since it’s a rare opportunity to come, we really have to check in and take a picture, because we don’t know when the next time will be! Sakurakatei Restaurant in Senganen, Kagoshima🤩 After the exciting trip to Kumamoto is over, the next stop is Kagoshima City in Southern Kyushu. I originally planned to take the JR Tamatehako sightseeing train to Ibusuki for a one-day trip, but heavy rains two days ago caused the train to be suspended, so I had to temporarily adjust the itinerary and turn it into a one-day trip to Kagoshima city. I bought a two-day city view ticket, which allows you to ride unlimited trams, buses and Sakurajima Ferry. It costs 1,800 yen, but in fact, the one-day ticket is enough 😂 The first itinerary was at Seonam Garden, which is most famous for being the filming location of the Taihe drama Atsuhime, as well as tasting the local delicacy Yangbangbian.
