Wandering Through Valletta – Stone Streets & Sea Breezes
#cityplaybook
Valletta, the capital of Malta, is the kind of place where every corner feels like a movie set. With golden limestone buildings, narrow streets, and bright blue waters in every direction, just walking around is half the joy.
I spent most of the day wandering with no real plan—just soaking in the charm. Every street seemed to open up to another postcard-perfect view, a cozy café, or a quiet little plaza where time seemed to slow down.
One of my favorite moments was taking the ferry across the water to see Valletta from a distance. From that angle, the city rises like a fortress of sunlit stone—it’s breathtaking.
Why I recommend Valletta:
・It’s compact and walkable, making it perfect for slow, aimless exploration
・Between land and sea, every view is photogenic and full of character

Step back in time in Valletta, one of Europe’s smallest capital cities!
Head to the stunning capital city of Malta, that is Valletta. Known for its museums, palaces and grand churches, this walled city is a cultural masterpiece. After walking in through the city gate, we headed over to Auberge de Castille. Sitting at the highest point of Valletta, this building was built in the beautiful Baroque style architecture in the 1740’s.
From here, you can get some great panoramic views of the city, and it is also just a stones throw away from the Upper Barraka. Many people describe this as one of the best views in Malta, and they’re not wrong. The garden is beautiful in its own right, but when you step out onto the terrace and are treated to the views of the grand harbour and the three cities, you can’t help but be blown away.
It’s also from here that you can witness a bit of history that you won’t want to miss. Every day apart from Sunday, at midday and 4pm, the guns are fired from a restored British Saluting battery, located at the lower tier of the bastion. Here’s my top tip - don’t pay for entry into the bastion. You get a perfect view from the gardens, and you don’t have to pay a penny.
By this time, you’ve probably worked up an appetite, so after a bit more exploring, make sure you grab a pastizz. It’s a savoury pastry, with either ricotta or curried peas inside. They’re a cheap eat, so why not grab one of each!
To finish off the day, make sure you check out Valletta at night. One particular highlight is the Triton Fountain after sunset. You’ll want to marvel in its beauty as it’s lit up.

The Varied Architecture of Valletta
The city of Valletta has been called ‘the City of Baroque’ and rightly so there are many amazing baroque style buildings to be found. This style of architecture was popular in Malta since the early 1700s, however many other different architectural styles can also be observed such as the earlier Mannerist architecture, you can also still find architectural elements including Arabic or Middle Eastern motifs and of course since the early decades of the 19th century neoclassical architecture became more prominent.

Great Solo Lunch by the Sea🏖️
#getgoing2025
I visited Porticello Restaurant in Valletta during my solo trip, and I couldn’t have been more pleased. The staff were so welcoming, which made dining alone a pleasant experience.😆
The terrace, overlooking the sea, was the perfect spot to enjoy a meal while taking in the view.
I ordered the lobster pasta, and it was absolutely delicious. For the price, the quality was exceptional. The lobster was fresh, and the pasta had just the right balance of flavors—rich, but not overwhelming. The portion was generous, so I definitely left feeling satisfied. ❤️
**Why I recommend it:**
- Cozy and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for solo travelers.
- High-quality food with great value for money.

Spending time in Malta, and especially in Valletta, felt like stepping into a historical adventure with a mystery to be solved. This stunning city, built by the Knights of St. John, is packed with history at every turn—grand fortresses, charming narrow streets, and breathtaking views over the Mediterranean.

Wherever you look at the sea & beach, Malta Valletta is clear and beautiful🩵
During my trip to Malta, I traveled to Sliema, Valletta, etc. based in St. Julian's. Among them, Valletta, the capital of Malta, was really great because the old European architecture was still beautiful and magnificent! In particular, the ferry was the main means of transportation for Maltese people, so you could travel around by ferry. I couldn't forget the moment I took the ferry from Sliema to Malta.🇲🇹

The most picturesque city of Malta
When you think about Malta, your first thought is definitely Valletta, its famous capital. Not without a reason I would say! Valletta is an experience on its own, and you can’t miss it during your trip to Malta!
Its narrow medieval streets with the cute colourful balconies, the vintage car and the beautiful yellow and orange hues give a vibe that you cannot find anywhere else.
When you arrive in Valletta, the first thing you have to do is visit the Upper Barrakka Gardens, which offer endless views to the Grand Harbour and the city below. You can also witness the Saluting Battery event where the cannons take off!
When you are tired from walking around the cute streets, the best idea is to sit for an Aperol or a coffee at the rooftop of the Embassy Valletta hotel. There you can find a gorgeous swimming pool along with the best city views!

Olive trees in Malta
It is not difficult to spot olive trees while strolling the sidewalks of Valletta in the autumn. In fact, olive trees have a long history of existence in the island of Malta as they had been introduced by the Phoenician seafarers in the 1st millenium B.C.
I was here in mid-October and it was just the beginning of autumn and the olives are still not too ripe. But soon, the olives will be ripe and scattered all over the ground.
If you are in Malta during this time, you can certainly look out for olive picking experiences and sometimes they are for good cause too!

Valletta in October 2022
Parliament House and Courts of Justice in the capital of Malta are two important buildings, because they represent the legislative and judiciary branches of the nation.
The former is the meeting place of the Parliament of Malta and this new building constructed between 2011 and 2015 is controversial because of the modern design and the high cost. Many have compared the cladding design to a cheese grater or a dovecote. I certainly do think it looks unique though.
The Courts of Justice building does not look extraordinarily special as it is built in the neoclassical style in late 1960s. It is worth mentioning because the trial for the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia took place during my visit to Malta on the 14 October 2022.

Il-Belt Valletta, Malta
While in the capital of Malta, I had encountered the word "Il-Belt" so many times. In the end, I only found out that Valletta is also known as Il-Belt. It is the southernmost capital of Europe and only has a population of less than 6000 people.
This small city is so beautiful that the whole city is named as the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. While here, I enjoyed walking aimlessly in the old town of Valletta so much. One just cannot stop being amazed at the architecture of its buildings and monuments. Later, I found out that this style is called the Maltese Baroque architecture and was developed during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Brunch and dinner at The Black Egg
Malta has a number of excellent places to eat. The Black Egg in Ta' Xbiex is one of them. Refining the brunch concept is the main mission. The result is a nice glass of Prosseco with light meals such as a poached black egg. Indeed, The Black Egg. Of course you shouldn't be here for brunch alone. You will certainly enjoy yourself here in the evening.
With a beautiful view of the sea and the many pleasure boats that lie just outside the capital Valletta, the terrace of The Black Egg is very attractive. Of course it is also pleasant to sit inside, partly due to the stylish interior. It is clear that the tasteful creativity of the owners can be found not only in the kitchen, but also beyond.
Of course you start with an aperitif. The helpful staff ensures quick service and offers some tips. Among the Classic Cocktails we opt for the Negroni del Professore and the Black Egg Tiki for the Signature Cocktails. The Negroni needs no further explanation. The Black Egg Tiki is a house cocktail of rum, campari, orange elixir, pineapple juice and bitters. Two toppers!
Various dishes are on the menu. The cook works with seasonal products. As a result, the menu may change from time to time. One certitude is in any case the 'catch of the day'. Fish comes in all shapes and forms on the island, but don't forget to ask the waiter beforehand. Naturally, fresh calamari fritti is also on the menu at The Black Egg. Recommended! With the main courses you always have a choice of pastas, meat dishes and fish dishes. With an adapted wine, this is undoubtedly a direct hit. Any space left? To round off the tasty experience in style, you can choose from a few desserts.

Valletta - a fortress city and a stronghold of the Maltese knights
Valletta is the capital of the Republic of Malta, the economic and political center of the state. It is located on the north-eastern coast of the island of Malta, on a rocky peninsula between two natural bays of the Mediterranean Sea (Marsamxett and Grand Harbor). The fortified city was founded in 1566 to repel the attack of Turkish troops on the Knights of Malta. Due to the abundance of monuments located in a small area (20 monuments on 50 hectares), Valletta is listed as a World Heritage Site!

Ambrosia Restaurant in Valletta is a great restaurant serving traditional Maltese dishes, seafood and other Mediterranean cuisine. Unfortunately it only seems to be open between 2 pm and 6 pm, which is a little late for a lot of the lunch crowd and a little early for a lot of the dinner crowd. However if you fancy a late lunch or an early dinner then make sure you check it out!

Glancing at the Granaries
As you wander around Floriana and Valletta you may stumble across some open, stone paved areas covered in circular stone slabs. They may seem quite strange and you may wonder what they are; well these are in fact granaries. The stone slabs you can see are actually the tops or lids . The granaries pictured are actually right at the end of the aptly named Grain Street, just outside the old main entrance to Fort Saint Elmo. The granaries were built in the 17th and 18th centuries to be able to provide storage within the fortifications in case of a siege.
