#summervacay #discoverchina #chinahistory
Tucked just past the South Gate of People’s Park, Hu Gong Shrine stands as a quiet tribute to General Hu Jingyi, a pivotal figure in early Republican China. Built in 1936, this memorial exudes the solemn elegance of Ming and Qing architectural style, offering a rare historical respite within the city’s vibrant core.
Stroll through the century-old locust trees, whose canopies whisper stories of the past, and follow the ginkgo-lined path that leads to the main hall—simple yet dignified, designed with intricate wooden beams and traditional eaves. It’s not just a monument; it’s a preserved narrative of Zhengzhou’s civic and military memory.

• Getting there: Take Metro Line 1 or 5 to People’s Park Station; the shrine is just inside the south entrance.
• Bonus: Combine this visit with a walk through the adjacent People’s Park to enjoy both culture and leisure in one stop.
Chongqing – The City of Mountains and Hotpot
#china #travel #discoverchina #chongqing Chongqing is unlike any other city I’ve visited! Built on hills and surrounded by rivers, it has an incredible cityscape with layers of roads, bridges, and skyscrapers. I loved riding the monorail through buildings and seeing the city light up at night. And of course – the spicy hotpot is a must-try! Chongqing is bold, exciting, and full of energy. A true hidden gem in southwest China.

A Regal Escape from Beijing’s Summer Heat at Prince Kung’s Mansion
#summervacay #discoverchina #musuem
Beijing’s summer can be sweltering, but inside the Prince Kung’s Mansion Museum, time slows. Cool corridors, shaded courtyards, and thick brick walls offer natural respite from the city’s heat. It’s not just a historic site—it’s a sanctuary.
The mansion’s layout cleverly balances grandeur with practical cooling. I took shelter beneath carved eaves, listening to cicadas while admiring the geometrical harmony of Qing design. Even at noon, the air stayed surprisingly gentle. The southern-style pavilions within the northern architecture gave the space a rare cross-regional elegance.
Travel Tips:
• Getting There: Easily accessed by taxi or Beijing Metro Line 6.
• Avoiding Crowds: Weekdays, especially after 2 p.m., are peaceful and cooler.
• Nearby Attractions: Pair with a stroll to Beihai Park or Houhai Lake.

Into the Wild: Trekking China’s Hidden Shangri-La at Ninong Canyon
#summervacay #hiking #shangri-la #naturalwonders #discoverchina #adventure #freshair #yunan
Few places live up to the mystique of “Shangri-La,” but Ninong Canyon in Yunnan’s Diqing Prefecture might just be it. Carved by the roaring Ninong River, this remote gorge—revered as Shangri-La’s final secret—offers raw vertical cliffs, plunging waterfalls in summer, and turquoise rivers that snake through flame-colored rock.
The real magic? A 20-kilometer hike from Ninong Village to Yubeng. Along this lesser-known pilgrimage, I crossed creaking suspension bridges, passed fluttering prayer flags, and shared paths with Tibetan herders. “Eagle Beak Rock,” an exposed cliffside platform, delivers a vertigo-inducing panorama worthy of any bucket list.
Travel Tips:
• Best Season: May–October; avoid winter snow and summer mudslides.
• Access: No direct buses. From Shangri-La, take a regional bus to Feilai Temple, then arrange local transport to Ninong Village (approx. 2 hours).
• Essentials: Anti-slip hiking shoes, trekking poles, and altitude gear—the route averages 2800m elevation.
• Costs: Entry is free, but villagers may charge ¥20–50 for trail maintenance.
Pro Tip: Hire a local guide to uncover off-trail secrets—or stay overnight with a Tibetan family for yak hotpot and stories under a prayer-flag sky.
Soothing Sounds and Southern Charm: A Layover at Gaoqi
#springitinerary #discoverchina #myitinerary
When your journey leads you through Xiamen, chances are you’ll pass through Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport—a gateway that offers more than just boarding gates and baggage claims. Conveniently located about 30 minutes by taxi from the city center, this airport stands out with its warm ambiance and subtle touches of Southern Fujian charm.
Unlike many generic transit hubs, Xiamen Gaoqi makes an effort to reflect the city’s identity. The interiors are softly lit, the décor draws on traditional Minnan aesthetics, and local culture subtly infuses the space. Whether it’s the elegant wooden finishes or the curved architectural motifs, you’re reminded that you’re in Fujian, even before you board your flight.
The airport is relatively large, and some gates (especially the far-end ones) can require a brisk 10-minute walk after security, so it’s wise to give yourself extra time. Staff here are notably helpful—they’ll often advise which security lane leads most directly to your gate. This level of proactive service can be a big relief, especially during busy hours.
Also, take note: some domestic airlines may request to weigh carry-on luggage at the gate, so keep your bags within the limit to avoid last-minute hassles.
Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport might not be the largest in China, but it leaves a lasting impression. It wraps efficiency in warmth and practicality in personality. Like the city it serves, the airport feels relaxed, welcoming, and gently infused with culture. Whether you’re arriving in Xiamen or departing, this airport is a fitting start—or end—to your coastal adventure.
Xitang Ancient Town: A Graceful Stay by the Riverside
Located directly across from the Misty Rain Corridor, the 'Xitang Xishe Riverside Art Hotel' offers a serene and artistic retreat.
This accommodation is just a 10-minute walk from the entrance of the ancient town, making it an ideal choice for those who want to leisurely explore the area or simply relax by the riverside and enjoy the scenery.
Usually, when I arrive at the ancient town, I head straight to a café. However, the view from the room's balcony was so stunning, and the hotel staff kindly provided a tea set, so I ended up enjoying tea time in my room instead of going out to a café. 😊
▶︎ Notes
The hotel staff can recommend restaurants and sightseeing spots, so if you don't have time to research, feel free to consult them for advice.
💰 Price per room: Around 16,000 yen (early May)
*Please note that prices may vary depending on the season.
Smooth Takeoff: Ending My Beijing Journey at Blue Bay International Hotel
#springitinerary #hotelrecommendation #discoverchina
The final night in Beijing deserves more than just a bed — it deserves a seamless send-off.
As my spring adventure in China came to a close, I chose to stay at Blue Bay International Hotel, just minutes from Beijing Capital International Airport. And it was the perfect call.
The convenience? Unmatched. The hotel offers complimentary airport shuttle service, which made catching my early morning flight completely stress-free. No long taxi queues. No metro rush. Just a quiet night and a smooth ride.
Though the main highlight is its proximity to the airport, Blue Bay doesn’t compromise on comfort. The rooms are spacious and clean, with all the essentials for a restful layover — plush bedding, quick Wi-Fi, and a calming atmosphere that felt like a retreat from the travel bustle.
📍Travel Tip: If you have an early flight or a long layover, book directly with the hotel to confirm the shuttle service timing. They’re punctual and professional.
🥡 Bonus: There are a few local eateries nearby, or you can opt for room service if you prefer to wind down indoors.
Rustic, Rich, and Rooted in the North – Taste of Dongbei at Cong Ji
#springitinerary #foodie #discoverchina #must-try
Sometimes, the best travel memories come in bowls of soup and unexpected flavor bombs.
While exploring Fusong County, on the way to the scenic heights of Changbai Mountain, I found a local treasure tucked just northeast of the intersection of Yunshan Road and Songlin Commercial Street: Cong Ji Dongbei Cuisine – Ginseng Chicken.
This cozy Northeastern-style restaurant hits all the right notes—flavor, atmosphere, and warmth. Their signature cold mung bean noodles (Da Lapi) were an instant standout. The noodles had the perfect chew, tossed in a rich, savory-sweet sauce that clung to every strand. It’s easily one of the most flavorful cold dishes I’ve ever had.
Their ginseng chicken soup was equally memorable—comforting, clean, and deeply nourishing. The goji berries in the broth were a surprise favorite, adding both flavor and texture. The soup felt like something a Northeastern grandmother might proudly serve.
With warm service and décor that reflects the heart of Dongbei—wooden finishes, folk touches, and a rustic charm—this restaurant is more than just a meal stop. It’s a pause to savor the spirit of the region.
A Thousand Hands, A Thousand Stories—Spring Reflections in Ancient Kaifeng
#springitinerary #discoverchina #religion
Some places don’t shout their history—they let it settle around you like incense in the air.
In the heart of Kaifeng, tucked quietly away from the city’s bustle, I found Guanyin Temple and Baiyige, two sacred spaces linked by a small corridor, yet centuries deep in heritage. These temples may not cover vast ground, but within their compact courtyards lies a profound, serene world.
Originally built during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, these temples carry the weight of over a thousand years. The true jewel inside is the astonishing wooden Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Guanyin, carved from ginkgo wood—an exquisite national-level relic from ancient China’s Northern and Southern Dynasties.
Despite the modest size, the temples are vibrant with incense, prayers, and echoes of footsteps past. Locals still visit daily, their quiet reverence giving the space a rhythm of continuity. The architecture is tight yet harmonious, every hall flowing naturally into the next, as if the centuries have folded into the very stone and timber.
Travel Tips:
• Don’t rush—observe the fine woodwork and calm expressions on the deity statues.
• Modest attire and respectful silence are appreciated.
Climb Without Leaving the City—Zhè Yǒu Shān Is Changchun’s Coolest Urban Playground
#springitinerary #discoverchina #fancyplace
Who says you need mountains to hike in spring? At Zhè Yǒu Shān, every escalator is a trail and every floor feels like a new summit.
This one-of-a-kind shopping and lifestyle complex in Changchun’s Chaoyang District transforms the ordinary mall experience into something playful and immersive. The building itself is a man-made mountain, complete with “uphill” and “downhill” routes, scenic resting spots, and tons of photo ops that scream spring aesthetic.
What I loved most wasn’t just the design—but the experience. I grabbed a hand-stamped passport booklet and went on a spring-themed stamp-collecting adventure through cat cafés, creative workshops, and even a cozy Totoro-themed space. It was fun, unexpected, and surprisingly peaceful amidst the buzz.
Travel Tips:
• Best visited on weekdays to avoid heavy weekend crowds.
• Great for solo trips or casual dates—there’s something for everyone.
• Stamp books (¥30) are sold inside—perfect if you enjoy keepsakes.
• Metro Line to Xiangxiqiao Station, or short walk from nearby bus stops like Tongde Road.
Night Charm of Luoyang – An Evening Itinerary at Xigong Xiao Jie
#springitinerary #discoverchina #nightlife
Tucked in the heart of Luoyang, Xigong Xiao Jie is a nostalgic pedestrian street that glows with red lanterns, local food, and traditional culture after sundown. It’s an ideal short city walk that blends heritage charm with neighborhood life, perfect for a relaxed evening exploration.
Xigong Xiao Jie isn’t grand. It doesn’t boast monumental gates or palatial roofs. Instead, it unfolds gently, like a scene from an old scroll painting touched by neon. The street comes alive at dusk. Locals pull up stools. Vendors wheel out carts. Red lanterns ignite one by one, casting a warm haze on cobblestone paths and weathered facades.
I entered from the south end, where a modest archway hinted at something intimate. The scent of grilled skewers and sweet osmanthus tea drifted through the air. Nearby, an elderly man played the erhu, its melancholy tune weaving through the street like smoke. Children ran past in flashes of laughter, weaving between food stalls and handcraft stands.
Luoyang may be famous for its history, but Xigong Xiao Jie whispers its stories in the language of everyday life. You just have to slow down, follow the light, and walk gently through the evening.
💡 Travel Tips:
• ✅ Come around 6:30 PM for the best mix of evening light and full street activity.
• 📷 Bring a phone with night mode or a low-light camera for lantern shots.
• 🧣 Spring evenings can be breezy—bring a light scarf or jacket.
Pink Petals & Ancient Stones: Cherry Blossoms at Zhou Wangcheng Square
#cherryblossom25 #sakura🌸 #discoverchina #spring
The cherry blossoms at Zhou Wangcheng Square don’t just bloom—they whisper history. Nestled in the heart of Luoyang, this expansive plaza sits atop the ruins of an ancient royal city, where the pink sakura trees stand in delicate contrast to the weathered stone relics of China’s Zhou Dynasty.
I arrived at dawn, when the square was still quiet, and found the trees bathed in golden light. Their petals drifted onto the engraved stone pathways, as if the past itself were dusted with spring. Nearby, a group of elderly tai chi practitioners moved in slow unison beneath the blossoms, their white robes fluttering like petals in the breeze.
Why This Spot Stands Out? Historical Backdrop: The square’s ancient ruins add gravitas to the fleeting beauty of the blossoms.
Blooming Stairmaster: China's Most Rewarding Leg Day
#cherryblossom25 #discoverchina #springhiking
They don't warn you about the flowers. As I began the thigh-tormenting ascent of Sanhuang Village's stone staircase—all 1,620 steps of it—I expected breathtaking views, not breathtaking blossoms. Yet there they were: wild mountain sakura trees staging their annual guerrilla art installation along the cliffside, their pink pops of color mocking my wheezing progress.
These cherries play by different rules:
- Their trunks grow at gravity-defying angles, some parallel to the ground
- Petals fall upward when caught in thermal drafts from the valley
- Their roots drink from mountain springs, giving the blooms a crystalline clarity
At the infamous "Crying Corner" (Step 788), where most hikers pause to question their life choices, a single sakura leans over the guardrail like a cheering spectator. Beneath it, someone had placed a weathered sign: “Even flowers climb this mountain. Will you?"
Time Warp in Xiamen: A Playdate at the Universe Fun Institute
#springitinerary #discoverchina #xiamen #nostalgia
The moment you push past the neon "Cosmos Fun Institute" sign, reality bends—suddenly it's 1998, 2008, and 2023 all at once. This retro-futuristic playground near Zhongshan Park station isn't just a photo studio; it's a carefully curated nostalgia trip where every corner winks at your childhood memories.
The CD wall shimmers with hundreds of discs (spot the fake Backstreet Boys album that's actually a mirror), while the giant "potato chip" installation—made entirely of real snack bags—will make you crave sour cream flavor.
Staff hand you a basket of props: disposable cameras, Tamagotchis, even a corded telephone that actually rings when your friend dials the rotary. Book the 11 AM slot on weekdays when sunlight slants through the polariod-covered windows, creating the perfect glow for their instant photo service (¥15 gets you a keepsake framed in 90s manga borders).
Pro Tips for Time Travelers:
- **Transport: 4-minute walk from Zhongshan Park Station Exit 3A (look for the building wrapped in a giant cassette tape mural)
- **Timing: Wednesdays at 2 PM = empty rooms + staff free to help style your shots
- **Must-Try: Their "accidental double exposure" service (¥25) blends your face with retro Xiamen postcards
Cherry Blossoms in Concrete Dreams: A Spring Glimpse at 1000 Trees, Shanghai
#cherryblossom25 #discoverchina #shanghai #architecturewonders #sakurafest
I arrived expecting a grey giant of architecture—and instead, found spring clinging delicately to its bones.
At 1000 Trees , the cherry blossoms bloomed shyly along the edges of this surreal urban structure, their softness a striking contrast to the industrial, tree-like forms of the building. It was the tail end of the sakura festival, yet a few stubborn trees still wore their pink crowns. I wandered slowly, snapping photos between the curves and shadows. It wasn’t peak season, but it was perfectly poetic.
Tips: Visit just before dusk for dramatic shadows and softer lighting on the petals and façade. Closest metro stop is Tian’anqiao Station, and from there it’s a short walk. Bring a wide-angle lens for architectural shots—this place was built for perspective.

Inside the Eye of Wisdom: An Evening at Tianjin Binhai Library
#springitinerary #discoverchina #library #thingstodo
Some spaces don’t just hold books—they hold breath, and Binhai Library does both the moment you step inside.
Known as “The Eye of Binhai,” this striking landmark in Tianjin is more than just a library—it’s a masterpiece of form and intellect. I arrived as evening settled, when the gentle glow from the arched glass façade met the flowing curves of the interior, transforming the space into something otherworldly. The central hall is a cascade of white, wave-like shelves rising floor to ceiling, wrapping around a glowing sphere—like standing inside a futuristic eye that quietly observes the city’s rhythm.
Inspired by the concept “mountain of books has paths to reach wisdom,” the design doesn’t simply store knowledge—it elevates it. Here, you don’t browse books. You ascend into them. Every angle offers a new composition for photographers, scholars, or dreamers. It’s no wonder it’s hailed as one of the world’s most beautiful libraries—and even appeared as a backdrop in the hit series Joy of Life.
To visit is to enter a dialogue between light, space, and story. The Binhai Library doesn’t just invite you to read—it invites you to reflect.
