It’s now time to head over to Sugarloaf mountain. Famous for its unique dome shape, this mountain takes its name from its resemblance to the traditional shape of concentrated refined sugar loaf. But first, we need to get there. There are two segments to the cable car ride. The first takes you to Morro da Urca, a smaller hill in the shadow of Sugarloaf. Even though Morro Da Urca isn’t the main attraction here, it was a great place to get panoramic views across the Urca district. There’s a lot going on here, so make sure you stick around for a bit. For example, you can find out about Rio’s heritage as World Cup hosts in 2014 and Olympics host in 2016. And who knows, you might even make friends with some of the local residents! Of course, there’s no denying that Sugarloaf is the main draw here. There’s a second cable car which will take you the rest of the way which is iconic in itself. Installed in 1912, it was a trailblazer, with it being the third of its kind in the world. It’s featured in many popular movies and television shows, such as the Simpsons and an unforgettable fight scene in the James Bond film Moonraker. With each car having a capacity of 65 people at a time, it can get a little cosy, but the each side is covered in transparent glass which means you’ll get a good view no matter where you stand. When you get to the top, you get to realise why this is a must-do, no matter how busy it may look. Copacabana beach in Rio De Janeiro is a super beach in the world! It is crowded with all kind of people from day to night. The sand, the sea, the view and the people are all so perfect! Be sure to make a trip to the Sugarloaf Mountain while in Rio De Janeiro for a perfect and amazing view of the city. If you are afraid of crowds, be sure to go early in the morning. Entrance fee is only around Real 80. If you buy fast past ticket online, it may cost you triple the price and not really worth it if it is not crowded. The ticket includes the cable car ride to the mountain top and there are cafes and restaurants there to enjoy the view. We’re at Corcovado railway station, waiting to head up to see one of the modern wonders of the world. Can you guess what it is? Even despite an early start, the heavy crowds are in place and we are wondering how long we’ll have to wait to climb the mountain. Thankfully, the wait was a lot shorter than we expected - around about 45 minutes to an hour. Before boarding the train, we were asked if we didn’t mind standing as it would be another 20 minutes until the next train came along we’re we’d be able to sit down. Stand we did - now, going uphill on a steep incline - I’d say it was a bad choice. But, after another 20 minute ride, we made it to the station at the top with only a short walk to go until we made it to our final destination. And there, coming into view is Christ the Redeemer - a 30 metre high statue sitting atop a mountain that tops over 700 metres. Now, this may be controversial, but I really didn’t enjoy this experience. Seeing the statue itself was, for me, quite underwhelming. But the crowds that are here are stifling, with barely any room to move around. The one positive thing from this vantage point are the views across the city and the bay. We just got back from an amazing trip to Rio de Janeiro, and it’s definitely a city that should be on everyone’s travel list! The Botanical Gardens were a peaceful escape with stunning greenery and so much shade—perfect for the hot weather. The cable car up Pão de Açúcar gave us breathtaking views of the city, and Ipanema Beach was everything we hoped for, especially the gay beach, which had such a fun and welcoming vibe. As a gay couple, we felt safe holding hands most of the time, which was really reassuring. While the views and experiences were incredible, we weren’t too impressed with our hotel—if we were to go back, we’d definitely recommend staying in an Airbnb instead for a better experience. Just got back from an incredible visit to the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Gardens, and I have to say, it’s the perfect escape on a hot day! The towering palm trees and lush greenery provide so much shade, making it a cool, peaceful retreat from the heat. We wandered through the orchid house, which was bursting with vibrant colors, and the Japanese garden, with its serene ponds and little bridges, felt like stepping into another world. Seeing the giant water lilies and the impressive imperial palms was a real highlight. Rio is an experience! It’s a place to truly feel the Brazilian experience: going to pagodes and sambas, spend a day at the beach drinking caipirinhas, walk along the Copacabana sidewalk till Ipanema. Of course, like any big city, you must be careful. Especially with valuable items, such as phones, bags and watches. However, that does not spoil your experience in this amazing city!
