My Day Trip to Monza: A Close Call at the Royal Villa! 🇮🇹👑
#summervacay
I almost missed seeing the Royal Villa in Monza, but what an incredible day trip it turned out to be! Monza, the third-largest municipality in Italy's Lombardy region after Milan and Brescia, is perfectly suited for a day trip from Milan.
My Recommended Route: Monza in a Day!
My itinerary started at the Duomo di Monza, moved to the Cappella Reale Espiatoria, and finished at the Villa Reale di Monza.
Getting there from Milan was easy; I took a local train and could even use my public transport pass. From Monza train station, it was just a 10-minute walk to the Cathedral, where I found plenty of restaurants if I needed a quick break. From the Cathedral, it was another 10 minutes to the Monument, and then only 5 minutes more to the Royal Villa. Behind the villa, the park is perfect for sunbathing, and there's even a small farm to explore.
Monza Cathedral (Duomo di Monza)
The Duomo di Monza is a stunning Gothic cathedral. Its facade alone is incredibly intricate and beautiful to behold. Though the main church was completed in 603 AD, it underwent continuous renovations and additions, finally reaching its current form in 1681.
Expiatory Chapel (Cappella Reale Espiatoria)
The Expiatory Chapel was commissioned by Vittorio Emanuele III, son and heir of King Umberto I. Architect Giuseppe Sacconi designed it to commemorate the very spot where his father was assassinated by anarchist Gaetano Bresci on July 29, 1900. It's a powerful and somber monument with a rich history.

Arona: My Day Trip Escape from Milan! 🇮🇹🚶♀️
#summervacay
I just took a train from Milan Centrale (a mere €6.60 one way) and discovered Arona—a small town that feels worlds away from Milan's hustle. It gave me this fantastic sense of escaping the noise. Even though Arona has its share of visitors, it somehow still feels incredibly free, relaxed, and peaceful.
My "Leg-Powered" Arona Itinerary:
Arona is quite small, so it's perfect for exploring entirely on foot and makes for an easy day trip.
Arrival & Lakeside Stroll: Right outside the train station, I immediately spotted a Ferris wheel. I just walked towards it, and in about 5 minutes, I was at the lake. Then, I followed the lakeside path for about 10 minutes until I reached its end.
Hike to Parco della Rocca Borromea: From there, I headed towards the direction of what looked like a path leading uphill (similar to your photo 7), aiming for Parco della Rocca Borromea. I highly recommend going here—the views are absolutely stunning! It's about a 10 to 20-minute walk, but it is uphill, so definitely wear comfy shoes. When I went, the usual mountain path entrance was temporarily closed, so I had to walk along the main road (watch out for cars!).
Explore the Old Town: Coming back down the same way I went up, I found myself right in Arona's charming old town.
It was a truly delightful day of walking and soaking in the tranquil atmosphere.

Milan's Unexpected Gem: Varese – From Alpine Reflections to 80s Beijing! 🇮🇹✨
#summervacay
Sometimes the most delightful travel moments come from unexpected encounters, and my trip to Varese was exactly that! Just an hour from Milan, Varese is a hidden treasure nestled among Northern Italy's mountains and lakes.
You won't find the hustle and bustle of a major city here, nor the crowds of popular tourist spots. Instead, Varese offers serene lakes, beautiful mountains, rich art, and fascinating history.
The highlight of my visit was an impromptu chat with a wonderfully enthusiastic local. She not only patiently shared insights into the area's history and pointed me in the right direction, but also spontaneously recounted her personal stories. She vividly recalled living in Mongolia and Beijing with her father in the 1980s, sharing tales of foreign cultures, travel anecdotes, and the dramatic changes she witnessed in China.
Just a few minutes of conversation felt like a journey across time and continents, creating a truly magical and romantic moment on an Italian street.

Bergamo 🇮🇹 | A Hidden Medieval Gem Near Milan
#summervacay
I always thought Bergamo was just an airport stop… but turns out, it’s a gorgeous little city full of charm and history! 💫
The town is split into two parts:
🏰 Città Alta (Upper Town) – the medieval old town up on the hill
🏙️ Città Bassa (Lower Town) – the modern part below
🚉 From the train station, it's about a 10-minute walk to the Funicolare Città Alta (cable car station). You can get tickets on-site — don’t forget to buy a round-trip! (Yes, you can walk up… but fair warning: the sun is no joke lately ☀️🥵)
🎯 All the main sights are centered around Piazza Vecchia, the old square.
The highlight? 💒 The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore — with its soft rose tones and stunningly intricate interiors, it’s pure beauty and elegance.
🎬 Bonus: Parts of Call Me by Your Name were filmed here too!
Bergamo is peaceful, scenic, and just 1 hour from Milan — the perfect half-day or full-day getaway. Don’t sleep on it!
