Üç Haçlı Kilise — or Church of the Three Crosses — is a captivating site that every history lover and explorer should visit. This ancient cave church, carved into soft volcanic rock, dates back to the 7th century and is named after the three prominent crosses sculpted on its vaulted ceiling.

Cappadocia: Rose Valley in Bloom
Rose Valley, or Güllüdere Vadisi, is one of Cappadocia’s most enchanting natural treasures. Visiting in spring is especially magical when the valley bursts to life with blooming iris blossoms, painting the landscape with delicate purples and vibrant colors that perfectly contrast the soft pink and rose-hued rock formations.
The valley’s terrain is beautifully grainy and textured in springtime, as wildflowers mix with fresh grass and the unique volcanic soil gives everything a special rough charm underfoot. Walking through Rose Valley feels like stepping into a living painting, where every turn reveals another breathtaking view.
One of the most fascinating features here is the network of ancient tunnels carved deep into the soft rock. These hidden passageways once connected cave churches, homes, and monastic hideouts, offering refuge and secret routes for early Christians. Exploring these tunnels adds a mysterious and adventurous dimension to your hike.
Rose Valley is also home to several remarkable cave churches, including: Üç Haçlı Kilise (Church of the Three Crosses), Haçlı Kilise (Church of the Cross), Kızıl Kilise (Red Church).
📍 Location: Near Göreme, Cappadocia
🕒 Best time to visit: Spring (April-May) for blooming flowers and mild weather

Cappadocia: Hidden History of Mustafapaşa Village
I’ve spent a quiet afternoon exploring Mustafapaşa, a charming Greek-Turkish village just 5 km from Ürgüp. And honestly — I’m so glad I did.
Formerly known as Sinasos, this village was once home to a wealthy Greek community before the population exchange in the 1920s. Today, you can still see beautiful stone mansions with carved facades, arched windows, and delicate details that give the village a distinct character you won’t find elsewhere in the region.
I wandered through narrow cobbled streets, passed by sleepy cafes and ivy-covered walls.
Church of Constantine and Helena, standing proudly in the town square. Built in 1729 by the local Greek Orthodox community, the church is known for its grand columns, detailed stonework, and traces of frescoes inside. It’s not always open, but even from the outside, it’s stunning — a reminder of the multicultural history this village carries.
Right next to the mosque, I stumbled upon the ruins of an old theological school or monastery — a hidden corner with arched stone walls and empty corridors that felt like something out of a movie set. There was barely anyone around, and the silence made it all the more atmospheric. You can feel the layers of history here — Orthodox, Ottoman, Anatolian — all quietly coexisting in stone.
📍Location: 5 km from Ürgüp, central Cappadocia
🏛 Main sights: Church of Constantine and Helena, old madrasa ruins, stone mansions
🕰 Best time to visit: Morning or late afternoon for shade and quiet walks

Cappadocia: Highs of Ortahisar Castle
Tucked between Ürgüp and Göreme, this charming village offers a perfect mix of history, daily life, and jaw-dropping scenery — all centered around its massive rock fortress, the Ortahisar Castle.
The castle, carved into a natural stone formation, once served as a watchtower and shelter. Climbing to the top (yes, you can!) gives you an incredible panoramic view of the surrounding valleys, snow-capped Mount Erciyes in the distance, and the red rooftops of the village below. It’s less crowded than Uçhisar Castle but just as impressive — and it feels more local, more grounded.
Before climbing the castle, we had our late breakfast at a cozy café tucked right beneath it — and it turned out to be one of the most memorable meals of the trip, served with a stunning view of the rock towering above us. The setting was peaceful and quiet, with just a few locals and the sound of birds echoing off the stone.
Stroll over to the bazaar area next to the castle — a small but lively market where local vendors sell handmade souvenirs, dried fruits, pottery, scarves, and regional delicacies. Many of the sellers are locals who love to chat and tell stories about the items they offer. I picked up some beautiful dried apricots and some nuts.
📍 Location: Ortahisar, between Ürgüp and Göreme
🏰 Must-see: Ortahisar Castle, climb to the top for the best views
🛍 Bonus: Explore the small bazaar next door for local crafts, fruit, and friendly conversation

Cappadocia’s Red Valley: Discover the Hidden Charms
During my time in Cappadocia, I decided to explore Kızılçukur Vadisi, also known as Red Valley — and I’m so glad I did. I arrived around 3 p.m., and while most people talk about this place at sunset, I actually loved the peaceful atmosphere of the afternoon. The valley was calm, warm, and glowing softly in the sun, with very few tourists around.
As I walked along the dusty trails, I was completely surrounded by red and rose-colored cliffs shaped by centuries of wind and rain. The rock formations felt almost otherworldly — smooth, curved, and full of hidden textures. Some of the cliffs looked like frozen waves.
One of the most fascinating parts of the hike was discovering small cave churches carved directly into the rock. Some of them date back to the 9th or 10th century. Stepping inside, I could still see traces of ancient frescoes on the walls. It was quiet and cool inside, and I had the space all to myself — a rare and special moment to feel the history of this place.
Kızılçukur Vadisi is perfect for anyone looking to experience the natural beauty and spiritual depth of Cappadocia without the crowds. Even without the sunset, the valley is stunning, and there’s a special kind of magic in exploring it at your own pace.
📍 Location: Near Ortahisar, Cappadocia
🕒 Best time to visit: Afternoon for peaceful hiking, or sunset for dramatic views
🥾 Tip: Look out for signs to small churches hidden in the cliffs. Some are easy to miss!

Selime Cathedral: Cappadocia’s Hidden Church
Deep in the rocky heart of Cappadocia, the majestic Selime Cathedral rises straight from the stone — a vast monastery carved into cliffs that once echoed with monks’ prayers and travelers’ footsteps.
At its center lies the Church of the Virgin Mary, one of the most sacred spaces in the complex. Dating back to the 8th–9th centuries, it’s believed to have been a key worship site during the early Christian era — a place of refuge, devotion, and awe.
Climb through narrow tunnels, explore ancient frescoes, and stand where centuries of silent faith still linger. With views over the dramatic Ihlara Valley, this site is not just history — it’s pure wonder.
