Takachiho Gorge - spectacular gorge in Kyushu
Takachiho Gorge is located in north Miyazaki, Kyushu, and is about 3h bus ride away from Fukuoka city.
It is a volcanic formation as a result of the nearby Mount Aso. With Gokase River cutting through the basaltic rocks, the result is a narrow chasm with basaltic columns on both sides, which resemble scales at many places.
The main attraction at the gorge has to be the 17m Manai Falls. To get a close up view of the falls, one can hire a boat, but it is recommended that you make a pre-booking for this. Otherwise there’s an observation deck which provides a great view as well.
Near the falls, there’s a restaurant that serves nagashi somen - flowing noodles. The noodles are served via flowing water on bamboo shoots, and you have to catch the noodles with chopsticks as they flow past. It’s quite an experience if you have not done this before.

Rhine Gorge: Secret Hiking Trail in Eastern Switzerland
#europetrip #hiking #mountain #river #gorge #travel #thingstodo #switzerland #swiss #solotrip #summer #naturalwonders
Often referred to as the “Swiss Grand Canyon,” the Rhine Gorge is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Nestled between Reichenau and Ilanz, this dramatic landscape of towering white cliffs and turquoise waters offers some of Switzerland’s most stunning hiking trails. A scenic train ride on the Rhaetian Railway brings you to this serene location, making the journey as delightful as the destination.
During my visit, I hiked the panoramic trail that skirts the edge of the gorge, offering breathtaking views of the rugged cliffs and winding Rhine River below. The quietness of the trail, coupled with the untouched beauty of the surroundings, made it feel like a secret escape. I ended my day with another scenic train ride out of the area and back to the canton of Chur, which acts as the gateway to this place.
The Rhine Gorge is a must-visit for hikers, photographers, and anyone seeking solitude in nature. Its accessibility and raw beauty make it a perfect off-the-beaten-path destination in Eastern Switzerland.
Shangri-La’s special Tiger
Tiger Leaping Gorge is the main gorge of the Yangtze River, located in Shangri-La, halfway of both Shangri-La city and Lijiang city (~ 90 km). This park is surrounded by mountains, you even can see Haba and Yulong snow peaks, few waterfalls and caves. If you are a rock enthusiast, this is a great place for you!
TLG has three reaches, with different levels of trekking difficulty or the main scenic spot in middle reach. Few restaurants are available. You have few options to visit this area:
1️⃣ Visit Middle reach scenic spot (pictures), were you climb up and down stairs. Perfect for one day trip, only will take you a couple hours to visit the canyon spot. This area is inclusive for people with disabilities and elders, if you pay an extra fee you can ride the electric stairs all from summit to lower spot (yet, you will be required to climb couple dozens of stairs to reach electric stairs).
2️⃣ You can either go back to Lijiang or take another bus to Shangri-La. That will be an additional hour and a half. This city has no entry fee, and it’s the only site in Tibet that doesn’t request special permit to foreigners to visit.
3️⃣ There is a 3-4 days trekking tour that includes all reaches. Most people indicates upper reaches are the most beautiful. But is only available for trekking groups that will stay in local guesthouses (mostly Tina’s or Judy’s). There tours include visits to local villages.
There is a public bus available from Lijiang to TLG, leaves at 9:30am and gets back around 2pm. Will take you to Shangri-La small town to buy entrance tickets and to Judy’s Guesthouse.
