Global Comfort in Phnom Penh: Starbucks @ AEON 2 Mall
While strolling through AEON 2 Mall in Phnom Penh, I found myself in need of a break and a solid cup of coffee. A quick search pointed me to Starbucks right inside the mall—a familiar name that’s often a safe bet when you’re abroad.
It was easy to find, located conveniently within the shopping complex. The store itself was exactly what you’d expect from a typical Starbucks—clean, organized, and welcoming. One interesting feature was the alfresco seating area that included a designated smoking section, which you don’t often see in every Starbucks branch.
I ordered my usual and, as always, the taste and quality were consistent with every other Starbucks I’ve visited around the world. That comforting familiarity is what makes Starbucks such a reliable stop, especially when traveling. There was a good variety of cakes and pastries available too, perfect for pairing with the coffee.
Service was prompt and friendly, and there were enough seats to relax and recharge. All in all, it’s a great pit stop for anyone shopping or just looking to rest their feet while enjoying a well-brewed cup of coffee.

A French Farewell: Khéma Restaurant Pasteur, Phnom Penh
Our tour group had our final lunch in Cambodia at Khéma Restaurant Pasteur, a well-known French dining spot in Phnom Penh. It was a semi-buffet concept—one main course of your choice, accompanied by unlimited access to a buffet spread of cheeses, salads, soups, breads, and desserts. It was an elegant way to wrap up the trip.
I opted for the steak as my main and requested it medium rare. It came out perfectly cooked, tender and flavorful, especially when paired with the local Kampot pepper. The seasoning was spot on, and the portion size was satisfying. The rest of the buffet items were decent—fresh enough, though none really stood out in terms of flavor or presentation. The cheese selection, however, was a nice touch and elevated the experience slightly.
Given our group size and a full dining room, service was understandably slow. Some staff members struggled a bit with English, but everyone remained polite and did their best to accommodate us.
The ambience was casual yet slightly upscale, with clean interiors and a bistro-like atmosphere. Nothing overly fancy, but comfortable enough for a relaxing meal with a few glasses of wine.
Overall, Khéma delivered a pleasant dining experience with good food and a solid French influence. It’s a good spot for those looking for a taste of European cuisine in the heart of Phnom Penh.

Cool Brews & Chill Vibes: Barista Coffee Toul Tompoung
After a deeply moving visit to the nearby Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, I found myself searching for a quiet spot to decompress—and Barista Coffee Toul Tompoung turned out to be the perfect choice. Tucked into a quiet corner about 10 to 15 minutes’ walk from S21, this cozy café offered exactly the kind of relaxed escape I was looking for.
The counter staff welcomed me warmly, adding a personal touch to the experience. I ordered an iced Americano, and it was just right—bold, strong, and full of flavor. Clearly, they take their coffee seriously.
The vibe inside was easy-going and calm. It wasn’t crowded, and the setup felt like a friend’s living room more than a commercial space. I even picked up a guitar they had in the corner and strummed a few tunes. No one minded—in fact, it made the space feel even more welcoming and laid-back.
Whether you’re a traveler needing a break or a local looking for a chill coffee spot, Barista Coffee Toul Tompoung is worth the detour. Great coffee, friendly staff, and a relaxed vibe—just what you need to unwind.

Haunting Echoes of the Past: Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
A visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh is an emotionally heavy but deeply important experience. Housed in the former Security Prison 21 (S-21), the museum preserves the memory of the atrocities committed during the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979. What was once a high school was turned into one of the most infamous torture and interrogation centers in Cambodian history.
The layout of the museum has been intentionally left stark and somber. Classrooms were converted into prison cells and interrogation rooms, and many remain as they were found when the regime fell. The metal beds, shackles, and photographs of victims are still in place, serving as a raw and chilling reminder of what happened within those walls. Walking through the quiet hallways and seeing the mugshots of thousands of victims is a powerful, sobering experience.
There are detailed exhibits throughout, including testimonies, biographies, and even personal belongings of victims. The audio guide is highly recommended—it provides valuable historical context, survivor stories, and reflections that bring clarity and emotional depth to what you’re seeing.
While it’s not an easy place to visit, Tuol Sleng is essential for understanding Cambodia’s recent history and the resilience of its people. It’s a site of mourning, remembrance, and education—a place where history speaks loudly in silence.

Rustic Charm at Mama Thai – A Group-Friendly Gem in Phnom Penh
Our group of thirty had dinner at Mama Thai in Phnom Penh, and it was a memorable experience more for the setting than the food itself. The restaurant has a distinctive rustic charm—the architecture resembles a traditional Thai countryside home, with wooden features and vintage touches that give it a warm, nostalgic vibe.
As we entered, we were greeted by shelves lined with local snacks and bottles of wine for sale, adding to the cozy market-like atmosphere. It felt less like walking into a restaurant and more like arriving at someone’s rural homestead for a hearty meal.
The food was good, though not particularly exceptional. Most dishes were decent and satisfying, but there weren’t any standout highlights. That said, the ambience made up for it. The open, airy layout was ideal for large groups like ours.
Service was mixed—some staff were attentive and quick, while others seemed a little overwhelmed by the size of our group. Still, everything went smoothly enough, and we all left satisfied.
Overall, Mama Thai is worth a visit for its unique setting and relaxed vibe. While the food may not steal the show, the experience of dining in such a charming space makes it a pleasant stop in Phnom Penh.

Hidden Gem in Phnom Penh: One More Restaurant Boeung Kak
Our group had the pleasure of dining at One More Restaurant in Boeung Kak, Phnom Penh, for one of our lunch stops—and what an experience it was. From start to finish, the meal stood out not just for its delicious food but also for the attention to detail in service and ambience.
Even the entrance to the restaurant was unique, giving off a strong first impression. We were guided to a private room where everything was already well set up. Orders were taken ahead of our arrival, so dishes started arriving promptly—efficient and seamless.
Presentation was top-notch. The food came beautifully plated with elegant cutlery and dishes that added an upscale touch to the experience. Every dish was tasty, but the standout items were definitely the fried fish—crispy, flavorful, and fresh—and the tom yam soup, which packed a perfect punch of spice and aroma.
Service was attentive throughout. The staff ensured we were well taken care of, and the setting itself was visually appealing, making the entire meal feel polished and memorable.
Verdict:
An excellent choice for group dining or a more refined local meal. One More Restaurant combines great food, professional service, and tasteful ambience to deliver an outstanding experience.

Buffet Bliss at 2Pangea – Breakfast Done Right
Staying at Nagaworld 2, I enjoyed breakfast at 2Pangea, and it was an absolute delight. Known as one of Phnom Penh’s premier breakfast buffets, this spot delivers in selection, quality, and service—all before 10:30am daily.
What stands out:
• Vast Spread: Their buffet rivals international luxury hotels, offering a wide variety—from made-to-order omelettes and fried eggs to sushi, dim sum, noodles, pastries, fruits, and even seafood.
• Outstanding Service: The staff were warm, attentive, and helpful. They managed a large crowd efficiently without compromising hospitality.
• Great Ambience: Spacious and stylish dining space with a calm atmosphere and comfortable seating. It felt more like a restaurant than a typical hotel breakfast hall.

湘友会湘菜馆 – Spacious Chinese Dining with a Karaoke Twist in Phnom Penh
Our group enjoyed dinner at 湘友会湘菜馆 while touring Phnom Penh. This large Chinese restaurant clearly attracts many Chinese diners, which is always a good sign of authenticity. The restaurant is quite spacious, with several VIP rooms on the second floor — we were lucky to get one of them.
What stood out was the massive round table that fit nearly 30 of us comfortably, a perfect setup for large groups or gatherings. The VIP room was well-designed for entertainment, featuring an attached karaoke area, which made the evening even more enjoyable.
Food quality was pretty good, delivering authentic Chinese flavors that satisfied our group’s appetite. The only downside was some language barrier issues with the staff, as their English was limited, which made communicating certain requests a bit challenging.
Overall, 湘友会湘菜馆 offers a fun and memorable dining experience in Phnom Penh, especially great for big groups who want good food alongside karaoke entertainment.

Happy Lamb Hot Pot – Toul Kork, Phnom Penh: A Standout Hotpot Experience
We had the pleasure of dining at Happy Lamb Hot Pot as part of our travel package, and it turned out to be one of the culinary highlights of the trip. In my personal opinion, this experience topped even more well-known hotpot chains like HDL—especially in terms of broth depth and ingredient quality.
Each diner had their own individual hotpot, which was a thoughtful touch for hygiene and convenience. I tried the chicken herbal soup and mala broth, both of which were rich in herbs and spices, yet not overpowering. The chicken soup was comforting and aromatic, while the mala had just the right amount of heat.
What really set the meal apart were the quality ingredients. According to our guide, the lamb is imported daily from Mongolia, and you could taste the freshness in every bite—tender, flavorful, and perfectly suited for hotpot. The beef slices were equally fresh and well-marbled. The presentation of the ingredients was meticulous, elevating the overall dining experience.
The restaurant itself was lively and welcoming, with many local patrons dining during our visit—a great sign of consistent quality and popularity. The space was well-designed and the atmosphere comfortable for both groups and couples.
While our meal was included in our package, I was told the average spend per person is around US$30. For the quality of the broths, meats, and overall ambiance, that feels like excellent value.
Verdict:
A fantastic hotpot experience that blends authentic flavors, premium ingredients, and thoughtful presentation. If you’re in Phnom Penh and craving hotpot, Happy Lamb is a must-try.

East Independence Park – A Serene Tribute in the Heart of Phnom Penh
Located near the iconic Independence Monument, សួនវិមានឯករាជ្យខាងកើត (East Independence Park) is a beautifully landscaped public space in the city center. Surrounded by bustling boulevards, the park offers a quiet escape amidst the traffic, and is a popular spot for locals to jog, stroll, or relax in the evenings.
The Independence Monument itself is a stunning lotus-shaped stupa, designed by Vann Molyvann to commemorate Cambodia’s independence from France. The park is especially picturesque at night when the monument is lit up in the colors of the national flag.
Though smaller and more formal than other parks, East Independence Park stands out for its cultural significance and well-maintained grounds. During national holidays like Independence Day or Constitution Day, the area becomes a focal point for parades and ceremonies.
If you’re in Phnom Penh, this is a great spot to pause, reflect, or take photos of one of Cambodia’s most meaningful landmarks.

Café Amazon Phnom Penh Center BBU – Popular Spot but Busy on Weekend Nights
I visited Café Amazon near Nagaworld 2 hotel on a Saturday night around 10pm. The place was bustling and packed with locals, so I couldn’t get a seat and opted for takeaway instead.
The location is very convenient, especially if you’re staying nearby. Ordering was straightforward — the staff at the counter spoke English and payment was done electronically, which made the process smooth.
The only downside was the wait time. My iced coffee took quite a while to be ready, probably due to the heavy orders at that busy hour.
Overall, it’s a popular café with good coffee, but expect a crowd and some waiting if you come on weekend nights.

Le Palace Chinese Restaurant – Classic Chinese Dining in Phnom Penh
Le Palace offers a traditional, old-school Chinese dining experience that reflects a classic style many will appreciate. Our guide brought us here for lunch, and we were seated in one of their VIP rooms, which was spacious and comfortable, perfect for a relaxed meal.
Inside the restaurant, there was a fish tank displaying live seafood, adding a fresh touch and allowing diners to pick their own fish. This definitely highlighted their focus on fresh ingredients.
The food overall was good, with fresh prawns and fish that stood out for their quality. The dishes were well-prepared, reflecting a straightforward approach to classic Chinese flavors.
Service was adequate and polite, though not especially remarkable. The restaurant was clean, bright, and quiet during our visit, as there were no other guests at the time, which made for a peaceful lunch.
Since our meal was covered by the tour, I can’t comment on pricing, but Le Palace offers a reliable, no-frills Chinese dining experience in Phnom Penh with an emphasis on fresh ingredients and comfortable private dining.
