🏰🌊Kotor: built for defense; stayed for the aesthetics✨️
Once a strategic fortress town, Kotor now feels more like a designer medieval dream.
Stone walls? ✔️
Winding alleys? ✔️
Bay views that make you question reality? ✔️✔️
Originally built to keep invaders out, now it pulls travelers in — with gelato stands, cats lounging like royalty, and Venetian charm in every detail.
I climbed the San Giovanni Fortress for the view (and leg day), wandered the Old Town for hours, and didn’t even notice how sunburned I was until I stopped taking photos.
➡️From the dramatic hike to San Giovanni Fortress, to the calm strolls along the coastline, to cats napping under baroque balconies — Kotor is both rugged and romantic in the best possible way.
📍Tip: Get lost on purpose. Kotor’s magic is in the detours.

The Historical Significance of the Kowloon Park
For Hong Kong locals, the Kowloon Park is a good venue for a nice afternoon reading session, a place for sitting-down after shopping at the nearby Park Lane, or otherwise swimming at its swimming pool. We take its leisure purpose for granted and few people look for its historic significance beyond its role as a park. I have never known the history of Kowloon Park until recently, when I came across photographs of the war relics on site.
The predecessor of the Kowloon Park is the Whitfield Barracks. At the time, the location at which Kowloon Park now occupies was strategically advantageous for defense purposes. It started as a military base as one could overlook the Kowloon side of the Victoria Harbour there. It was meant to be a temporary encampment in the beginning. When the British took over Kowloon in 1861, they named it the Whitfield Barracks and it became a permanent military site. At first, the Indian garrison was stationed at the Whitfield Barracks.
At one point, the Whitfield Barracks had more than 85 buildings. Of all of these buildings, only four barrack blocks and the battery were preserved to the present. Given this early history of the Kowloon Park, there is still a site in the current park where military relics stand.
The Kowloon West II Battery was built during 1878 and 1880. It was built in concrete. There are three gun emplacements, a command center, ammunition storage spaces and a machinery room. Each gun emplacement was fixed with a 7-inch cannon. The use of the fortress ceased in 1916.
In 1970, the former Whitfield Barracks were turned into a park space, as such permanently altering its strategic role and became a key cultural and leisure site for Hong Kong people.

Proudly Historic as a Fortified Ancient Town — The Dapeng Fortress
The Dapeng Fortress might be my favorite ancient town in Shenzhen.
A leisurely walk of the whole Dapeng Fortress would take about 2 to 2.5 hours.
The Dapeng Fortress was constructed during the Ming Dynasty in the 14th century. In 1394, the 27th year of the Hongwu Reign of Ming Dynasty, the authorities began constructing the Dapeng Fortress, which was intended to serve exclusively defense purposes against pirates, foreign enemies and resistance fighters. Together with the Nantou Ancient City in Nanshan, Shenzhen, the Dapeng Fortress was one of the 24 defense outposts along the mountain ridges of Lingnan (southern China). The Dapeng Fortress was especially important for coastal defense during the Qing Dynasty. In 1704, the 43rd year of the Kangxi Reign, the Qing Court turned the Dapeng Fortress into a naval base, which oversees the coastal defense of all of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. This role of the Dapeng Fortress would be very important during the Opium Wars of the 1800s.
In 1839, General Lai Enxi, who was a native of Dapeng, sounded the canons that would signal the defense of Kowloon against British attacks. Thus the curtains were drawn for the Opium Wars. After Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain in 1940 and before ceding Kowloon to the British in 1860, the Qing Court has constructed the Walled City of Kowloon for the purpose of defending Kowloon. At the time, generals from the Dapeng Fortress oversaw the Walled City of Kowloon. As such, the Dapeng Fortress had a very close relationship with the history of Hong Kong.

In the Heights above Hvar
The city fortress of Hvar dates from at least the late 1200s, and is aremarkable example of this type of city fortifications. The views from the Fort, looking down over Hvar Town, HvarHarbour and the islands beyond are magnificent and well worth the hike through the old town streets. The for itself is very well preserved and today houses a small museum and a café.

Step Into History: The Tower of London’s Timeless Legacy
#uktrip #london #england #fortress #travel #thingstodo #soho
The Tower of London isn’t just a fortress—it’s a gateway to nearly 1,000 years of British history. Walking through its ancient stone walls, I was captivated by tales of kings, queens, and infamous prisoners who once lived (and lost their lives) here. The highlight? Seeing the dazzling Crown Jewels up close, a breathtaking display of royal power. With its haunting past, Beefeater-led tours, and stunning riverside views, the Tower is a must-visit for history lovers and curious travelers alike. Don’t miss the chance to stand where history was made!
Hike up to Počitelj Fortress
Počiteli itself is a beautiful little village that straddles a bend in the Neretva river, surrounded by lush green countryside, a really underrated place to visit, to get away from the hordes of tourists and enjoy being surrounded by nature. The hike up to the fortress is a little challenging but well worth the effort. The fortress is free to enter and it’s great fun exploring the ruins. The views on the top are exceptional. To get Počitelj it takes about 40 minutes by car from Mostar and the hike from the village up to the Fortress takes about half an hour. There are many hiking trails in the area for those who wish to extend their hike and also it’s very pleasant to walk along the riverbank.

A lesson in Histroy
#myhiddengems
I was glad to be part of a tour that had a very good guide. This made the trip very enriching with so much history being revealed. Firstly the complex in which both the fortress and the park are, is a very beautiful location by the confluence of two rivers. Our guided tour started in the Upper Town, where the imposing walls and towers provided a sense of defense. There are various bastions, gates, and the impressive Clock Tower. The military museum, located within the fortress was very captivating with its extensive collection of artifacts, weapons, and exhibits detailing Serbia’s military history.
On the whole this is a historically rich site dating back to the Romans. The other things in the complex like the park too are significant with its own unique offering. It has a beautiful space with well-maintained gardens, walking paths, and plenty of spots for picnics and relaxation. From the fortress you will have a spectacular view of the city and the rivers. A trip here is a must when in Belgrade.

📍Zagreb, Croatia Capital 🇭🇷
#falltrip #mytravelhacks
💡Final destination in Croatia — Zagreb!
Zagreb, Croatia's capital city, is a great destination for travelers who want to experience Croatian city life without having to be on the coast. Many scenic spots are within walking distance, and there are also free English-speaking city guided tour. If you don't want to walk all day, the transportation facilities are still convenient and cover all tourist attractions.

💡 Rovinj is a coastal city in northern Croatia. It is known as "Little Venice" because of its Venetian architecture and its location across the Adriatic Sea from Venice. The Old Town is full of Italian charm, and you can take beautiful photos of its narrow streets and colorful buildings. It is definitely a town worth visiting.

🇱🇰 Sigiriya lion Rock, the First UNESCO world heritage site in Sri Lanka
#freehotelstay
Type "Sri Lanka" in Google images and I'm sure the first few images you see will be the iconic Sigiriya Lion Rock. Inscribed in 1982 as one of the first UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka, Sigiriya Lion Rock is an ancient rock fortress built in the fifth century which stands around 200 m high.
The Sigiriya Fortress has an interesting history. It was built by King Kasyapa, the second king of the royal Moriya dynasty of Sri Lanka. He was not the rightful heir and acquired the throne by rebelling against his father. He built the palace right on top of the rock column to avoid potential attacks from his brother Moggallana, the rightful heir to the throne. He was defeated by Moggallana 22 years after ascending to the throne. The fortress was used as a monastery after Kasyapa’s death till it was abandoned in the 14th century. A few hundreds years later, it was discovered by British Army Major Jonathan Forbes in 1831.
Be prepared to have a workout while visiting the Lion Rock as there are around 1200 steps of stairs to climb throughout the visit. The amount of time taken to reach the top depends on your fitness level and also the crowd. We took about 2 hours to explore the site.
A foreign adult ticket costs USD 30 while a foreign child ticket costs USD 15. Tickets can be bought online from the official website or from the ticket office onsite. The site opens from 6.30 am to 5.30 pm every day. It is better to arrive early in the morning or in the late afternoon (last entry at 4 pm) to avoid the scorching sun.

Fisherman's Bastion fortress is a historical landmark in Budapest, Hungary, that offers breathtaking views of the city and the Danube River. Built in the late 19th century, between around 1895 to 1902 the bastion was designed to provide a panoramic lookout point over the city and to serve as a lookout point for defenses and was named after the fishermen who once defended this part of the city walls. The Bastion features seven towers that represent the seven Hungarian tribes who founded Hungary in the 9th century. The towers are decorated with intricate details, archways, and balconies, and provide a stunning backdrop for photos. Visitors can climb the stairs to the top of the bastion to enjoy the panoramic views of Budapest, including the Hungarian Parliament Building, the Chain Bridge, and the Buda Castle. Fisherman's Bastion is a must-visit attraction for anyone traveling to Budapest, and its stunning views and rich history make it as a truly remarkanle experiences to have.#fortress #mytripvlog #europeanarchitecture #oldtown

Artist heaven in Shenzhen
Use a weekend and enjoy some great scenery of Dapeng Ancient Fortress in Shenzhen. Best option is going by a car, but there is also a bus E11 and it stops nearby. Beach is just few hundred meters away.
There are nice coffee shops, tea places, one of the best pizza places on left side from entrance. Yes, wood stove pizza! Personally, I enjoy sketching there, drinking some cold beverage and just absorb the vibe that this place gives. Sound of birds, cats sleeping on porches, children play around. Nighttime is also fun, music bars and restaurants with local food and cold beer.
You can walk for hours and still don't see all small alleys and details around houses. It's a place of wonder.

Salzburg, Austria is a less than 2 hours train ride from Munich, one of the cities in Germany.
Salzburg Altstadt (old city) is a place where all the historical buildings are. One of them is the Fortress Hohensalzburg.
As a fan of the movie „The Sound of Music“, it is one of the reasons, why I like visiting Salzburg 😊
Some of the scenes of the movie „The Sound Music“ were shot here!
We walked around the city for sightseeing. First thing that we visited was the Fortress! It was so beautiful and as we were there at the top, it was nice looking at the view of the whole city! It was absolutely breathtaking! The old city is a real gem!

Suwon Fortress in Autumn
#fallingforfall
Suwon Fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is located in Suwon, Korea. It is one of the most important historical sites of the country and is the only castle in the country whose walls remain intact. Transportation is very easy and it is 10 minutes from Suwon Station.
When you come here, you can walk around the city walls, ride a bike or visit the old watchtowers. In autumn, a magnificent view is seen with the color change and shedding of the leaves of the trees and I recommend you to observe this change here.

spectacular view from the fortress
overlooking the city of ohrid and lake ohrid. this is one of the most important fortification in the history. now it’s a major tourist attraction, which located in the very centre of the old town of Ohrid. I got up early to get there right before it opens. in the morning, the sun was not strong, it was really nice to walk around.
inside of the fortress, there are few lookouts where you can overlook the city, the mountains and beautiful lake Ohrid.
since it only takes around 10-15 mins to go uphill to visit this fortress, I do recommend everyone who is in town to visit this place. and there is one cafe right next to the entrance, you can grab some drinks before or after your visit. #passionpassport #gooutside #mountainview #fortress #macedonia
Bjni Fortress - Armenia
Bjni Fortress - A medieval Armenian fortress located in the village of Bjni in the Kotayk Province of Armenia.
It was built From the 9th to 10th centuries
Pahlavuni family of the Bagratuni Dynasty.
It was destroyed during the destruction of the village of Bjni by the Turko-Mongol conqueror Timur Lenk in 1387-1388.
Some of the fortress walls survive in relatively poor condition. Every time I visit Bjni I am going up the hill to wander around the ruins, imaging how the fortress was looking back then. My mother’s auntie used to tell me stories about the fortress. Stories that she was told as a kid and how the fortress was looking when she was a kid.
It is truly a magnificent place and definitely one of my childhood favorites.

Driving around Stepanavan
Me and my very good friends decided to go to Stepanavan and surprise another friend of ours as it was her birthday.
We were driving around enjoying the views ⛰
It was my first time in in northern part of Armenia and I was shocked by the nature.
Later we visited the Sochut Dendropark named after Edmund Leonowicz. Where we spent several hours as it is pretty big and nice place to walk around and relax.
After a we visited the ruins of Lori Castle 🏰 which is an 11th-century Armenian fortress located near the Lori Berd village.
Later in the evening we went to a place called “Carahunge cafe & more” and had an amazingly delicious dinner 😍

Dapeng vacation
Dapeng is small village east from Shenzhen. If you are taking train closest railway station is Pingshan Railway Station. From there you can take Didi for around 30 minutes ride. You have many options for accommodation, from hotels to some local apartments.
Dapeng is famous by fortress. It was built in 1394 to protect from pirates. Today it is protected by Shenzhen government and you can enjoy and explore for free. On the second picture you can see name of the restaurant, I recommend you to go there. Food is so tasty and it's located at east side of fortress.
Around Dapeng peninsula you have few nice beaches, you can explore them one by one, each of them have something interesting.

Fluffy friends of Ananuri Fortress
#hiking #fortress #castle #georgia A beautiful fortified castle situated on the uphill, with a magnificent view of Zhinvali reservoir is definitely worth visiting. The castle is interesting to research and you may walk around finding new places and tunnels.
The castle was once a shelter for refugees and was named after Ana from Nuri, who didn’t give away the location of the shelter to the enemies.
You can still feel the atmosphere of the older days there. I enjoyed climbing the walls and walking through passage ways imagining how people lived there.
Now you can find a lot of cats and dogs there that are just laying in the sun or play with each other or the visitors. They are taken care of and these fluffy friends definitely play their roles in attracting visitors.

In our series of hiking expeditions, as soon as after we were done with Nandi hills🏞️ in Bangalore; we hopped on the local bus to Gandikota, literally known as the Grand Canyon of India. The first sight we had after reaching at the entrance gate is, just around 3 kilometres radius we could see a temple🛕, a mosque🕌 and an ancient british style jail🏚️ that says the whole story how this place has been passed on between kingdoms and it is most coveted one. We started hiking towards the canyon, looking around the local village too. Once you reach the canyon, to go further you have to be cautious with the single rocks 🪨 that have amassed there. Some rocks may topple you, and don't be crazy like me 😝to take a picture standing on a single rock below which it is only straight to the ground of 2500 metres height. With caution apart, overall it is a super fun🥳 place to go with your friends and play around. #indiatravel #fortress #culturetrip

Alcazaba fortress in the heart of Malaga
Alcazaba fortress was already built back in the early 11th century by Hammumid Dynasty during the times when Andalucia was under Arab control.
Inside the fortress, the visitor can experience breathtaking views from many places. The fortress itself and the sea seen from the hill (the fortress was built on a fairly steep hill) is just amazing.
The regionally important citrus trees are also present and the colorful fruits can be seen during the autumn.
As moving in the fortress area is quite hard due to the steep hill, selecting a fairly cool day to visit the place can be a good idea. There are some ticket packages available that grant access to all the historical buildings in the area. Seeing all of them needs one day or even more so don’t try to push yourself too hard.
I personally enjoyed that there is a new beautiful view waiting behind almost every corner. The different parts of the area are somewhat varying in terms of style and condition so it’s worth going everywhere. Some snacks and drinks can be bought inside the area but the availability of services is fairly limited. Remember to have your drinking water with you!
The fortress is situated in the heart of the old city of Malaga in Andalucia, Spain. it can be seen from the harbor and easily accessed from the shopping streets in the center. Actually the location is so central, that it’s fairly hard to miss the place.
I really recommend going to Malaga. The history can be seen and felt there so it’s among my favorite places in the south coast of Spain. It’s also worth mentioning that the queues are much shorter than in Granada.
