☕ Bitter Brew at Starbucks Mid Valley Southkey, Johor
As a long-time Starbucks customer (and shareholder), I hold the brand to a high standard, especially given the premium pricing and emphasis on customer experience. Unfortunately, my visit to Starbucks at Mid Valley Southkey left much to be desired—and not just with the coffee.
From the moment I stepped in, it was clear that the team was either under-trained or simply unmotivated. There was no queue, yet the ordering process was painfully slow. The cashier took an unusually long time to key in my order, and even walked away mid-order to clean a table after a customer request. It was baffling—shouldn’t staff responsibilities be better delegated?
Next came the shocker: my Starbucks card couldn’t be used because of “no good signal,” and I was told to pay with cash. This is the first time I’ve ever encountered this issue at a Starbucks outlet, globally. Ironically, my drinks were ready before the transaction even went through, so clearly the system wasn’t entirely down.
I then asked for Equal sweetener, and my father-in-law requested brown sugar. The response? “Use the sugar syrup, we ran out of sugar.” How could Starbucks—a brand known for consistency—run out of basic sugar? When my wife questioned it, the sugar suddenly “reappeared.” That response felt more like laziness than a real shortage.
The lack of professionalism here was disappointing and concerning. Starbucks Malaysia needs to take note, especially with competitors like Luckin and Cotti entering the market and raising the bar. As a global brand, Starbucks should never compromise on service quality, no matter where in the world the outlet is.

☕ Aromatic Brew, Sluggish Service at Starbucks Reserve Gurney Plaza
Visited the Starbucks Reserve at Gurney Plaza and went straight for their signature Reserve coffee selection. I opted for beans from Colombia this time—lightly roasted with a rich, inviting aroma. The roast brought out a light acidity and a subtle sour note, which I personally don’t mind. A nice, refined cup as expected from Starbucks Reserve.
However, the service left a bit to be desired. My coffee was left sitting even after all the water had finished dripping, and despite trying to get the server’s attention a couple of times, no one responded promptly. That was disappointing, especially at a Reserve outlet where a more refined experience is usually expected.
Interestingly, I was told that even a simple cup of iced water would cost RM1. It’s the first time I’ve ever been charged for water at a Starbucks—globally. While I’m okay with it (as a shareholder, I understand the revenue angle), I can’t help but wonder if small charges like this, or for straws, might alienate regular customers over time.
On the bright side, the interior of this branch is nicely laid out, with that familiar modern and cozy Starbucks aesthetic. It’s a good place to sit and unwind—just don’t expect prompt service.

Disappointing Starbucks Reserve Experience at 1 Utama — Great Beans, Poor Execution
I dropped by Starbucks 1 Utama for my usual afternoon coffee fix. As someone who frequently visits Starbucks Reserve outlets across Malaysia, I was excited to try a new single-origin bean. I’d been eyeing the Laos beans and was eager for the full Reserve experience – but what I got fell far short.
Things started going downhill at the ordering counter. One barista told me the Laos beans were not available, but when I placed my order, another staff said they were. Confused but hopeful, I proceeded. What truly shocked me was at the brewing counter — the same barista who initially told me Laos wasn’t available went ahead to brew Indonesian beans without even informing me. When I stopped him to clarify, another barista stepped in and, to everyone’s surprise, found the Laos beans. This mishandling showed a severe lapse in professionalism and training.
I had selected the siphon brew method to enjoy the craft experience. Sadly, that too was handled poorly. The barista poured in the grounds after the water had already risen, showing unfamiliarity with the proper process. There was no pre-brewing bean aroma introduction, a Reserve hallmark I’ve come to expect. When the coffee was finally served, it came without the signature blend card or chocolate. I had to ask for both, only to be handed a crumpled card and told the chocolate had run out.
Despite all this, the coffee itself was still enjoyable — medium roast with subtle notes of coconut and ginger, aromatic and smooth.
The ambiance inside the café was classic Starbucks — cozy and inviting. But the poor execution at this outlet really took away from what could’ve been a great Reserve experience.

☕ Brews with Depth: Starbucks Reserve Delivers at Mid Valley 🌍
If you’re a coffee lover looking for something beyond the usual brews, Starbucks Reserve at Mid Valley Megamall offers a refreshing step up. Known for its premium small-lot beans and handcrafted brewing methods, this Reserve branch delivers both consistency and quality in every cup.
I stopped by for a midday coffee break, choosing to sit at the bar—a great spot to observe the brewing process and chat with the knowledgeable baristas. I ordered a pour-over using the Indonesia West Java beans, a recommendation from the barista. It turned out to be right on point—heavily roasted, full-bodied, and rich in flavor, just the way I like it.
What sets Starbucks Reserve apart is its ability to create an experience that’s more than just coffee—it’s interactive, educational, and elevated, while still being relaxed and welcoming.
⸻
Final Verdict
Starbucks Reserve Mid Valley is a solid go-to for those who appreciate specialty coffee and a more refined café vibe. Great beans, great baristas, and always a great experience.

☕ A Perfect Pit Stop – Starbucks Sunway Iskandar DT
We made a quick coffee stop at Starbucks Sunway Iskandar Drive-Thru before heading back to Singapore, and it turned out to be a relaxing breather. The store is housed in a standalone building, giving it a spacious and modern vibe—not your usual cramped mall outlet.
There were ample parking spaces just outside, which made things super convenient. Inside, the café had plenty of seating—both cozy and open spots—perfect for winding down with a hot drink. I went with my usual iced coffee, and as expected from Starbucks, it delivered the familiar comfort and caffeine hit I needed for the journey ahead.
Service was friendly, and the environment was calm and inviting. Whether you’re passing through or staying nearby, this Starbucks is a great option for a short break or a coffee fix.

Starbucks Reserve at Sunway Pyramid — A Premium Coffee Upgrade
Starbucks Reserve at Sunway Pyramid offers more than your usual Starbucks experience. Located in a spacious corner of the mall, it carries an elevated premium feel with its dark wood furnishings, more relaxed ambiance, and dedicated Reserve menu.
We dropped by for an afternoon break and tried a couple of their specialty brews. True to form, the Reserve coffees were rich and complex, offering distinct flavour nuances not found in regular blends. The baristas were knowledgeable and shared helpful brewing details—it’s clear they take pride in the craft.
We also sampled a Reserve pastry, which paired beautifully with the coffee. Quality was on point, though we expected a slightly higher-end presentation given the Reserve branding.
Prices are naturally above standard Starbucks—treat it as a special caffeine experience, not a daily run. Service was warm with a welcoming smile, and the seating was comfortable, making it a great spot to relax between shopping or to catch up with a friend.

☕ Caffeine & Convenience: A Productive Hour at Starbucks AEON Bukit Tinggi
I spent about an hour-plus working at this Starbucks outlet inside AEON Bukit Tinggi and found it to be a decent spot for getting some work done.
There’s a power point available in one corner, which came in handy for my laptop. The staff at the counter were friendly and polite, making the experience feel welcoming from the start.
As expected, the drinks were up to Starbucks’ usual standard—consistent and satisfying. I got exactly what I needed: a reliable cup of coffee in a relatively quiet space.
The only drawback? The café looks slightly dated, with furnishings that could use a bit of a refresh. A minor facelift would definitely give the space a more vibrant and cozy feel, especially for regular customers or remote workers.
⸻
Final Verdict
A reliable and functional Starbucks for coffee and quiet work time—friendly service and essentials like power access are there, but the space could benefit from a little renovation.
