#summervacay I visited another museum in Porvoo – The Old Town Hall - Porvoo Museum. It shares a ticket with Holm House, and conveniently, the two museums are right next to each other. This museum isn't huge, but it's quite interesting. The basement level features some Nordic animal specimens, which the kids really loved. On the first floor, there's a display of beautiful tableware designed by Finnish designers in the 19th century. Unfortunately, these items are no longer produced, so you can only admire their beauty. Another room holds several oil paintings by the same artist. One particular painting was very unique, as it even had horsehair attached to it! The staff inside were incredibly enthusiastic. Seeing our interest, they came over and told us that this painting's style was quite different from the artist's other works, making it the only surviving piece in this particular style. It's over 100 years old and very precious, they said. #summervacay The Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki truly suited my taste! I found its collection to be quite rich, even though many of the artists were local and unfamiliar to me. It was a pleasant surprise to stumble upon Van Gogh's "Street in Auvers-sur-Oise" tucked away in an inconspicuous corner, categorized simply by the artist's use of vibrant colors. During my visit, the museum was featuring a comprehensive exhibition on the life and work of the Finnish realist painter Eero Järnefelt. His paintings were incredibly numerous, almost filling an entire floor! Among them, I recognized his famous Koli Landscape series (one of which I captured in image eight) and "Under the Yoke (Burning the Brushwood)" (image nine). #summervacay Suomenlinna Sea Fortress in the summer is absolutely stunning! I highly recommend taking the ferry to get there, and the best part is that it's included in your HSL pass, making it super convenient. You can also opt for a cruise, which costs about 8.5 Euros round trip and takes you to slightly more distant islands. Once on Suomenlinna, there are several museums you can explore, and most are covered by the Helsinki Card (or similar tourist passes). One museum that isn't included, and I personally found to be of lower value, is the Toy Museum. It seems to be a private collection housed in someone's home, with a cafe on one side and their toy collection on the other. I felt the entrance fee wasn't quite worth it for what you get. #summervacay I recently visited the Tytyri Mine Museum while I was in Lohja for some Chinese food, and it was quite a unique experience! It's not covered by the Museum Card, probably because it's owned by Nordkalk, the company that operates this underground quartz mining site in Finland. They've already dug over 300 meters deep, so they decided to repurpose some of the mined-out areas for visitors. Full admission is 18 Euros per person for anyone over two years old. For groups of five or more, there's a 20% discount, but for a standard family, it's tough to get that discount. You can book online or buy tickets on-site; it wasn't crowded when I went, so on-site should be fine. If you want to book an English tour, they usually only have one on Saturdays at 1 PM or 12 PM, so check their website for exact times. To get down, you take a Finnish-made KONE elevator 112 meters deep. It's incredibly fast; I barely felt the descent! The elevator quality is definitely impressive. Down in the mine, it's quite cool, around 8 degrees Celsius. What really surprised me was a section they rent out for events! There's a spot equipped for parties or meetings with a projector, tables, chairs, and heating. Apparently, people even hold weddings down there – I can't imagine having a wedding in that environment, it would be so unique! There's also a short film about quartz mining, old mining cart tracks, and even a person dressed as a small monster, which the kids found quite entertaining. Overall, it's a pretty special museum. I wouldn't say it's worth a dedicated trip just for the museum, but if you're already in Lohja, it's definitely worth checking out.
