Unveiling West Lake's Legacy :Museum Day
#discoverchina
Nestled beside the serene waters of Hangzhou's West Lake, the West Lake Museum offers a captivating exploration into the lake's rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. As China’s first lake-themed museum, it stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature that has defined this region for centuries.
Stepping inside, I was welcomed by an underground exhibition space that felt like a hidden world beneath the lake’s surface — calm, quiet, and full of stories. A large sand table of West Lake greeted me first, giving a bird’s-eye view of the area before taking me deep into its past.
From ancient scrolls and imperial paintings to interactive displays and rare artifacts, every corner of the museum unveils a new layer of West Lake’s legacy. One highlight? Seeing Emperor Qianlong’s ink painting, which felt like peeking into a piece of living history. The museum also honors the lake’s natural beauty, showcasing the plants, wildlife, and delicate balance that keep it alive.
It’s not just about learning — it’s about feeling the connection between nature and culture, between ancient dynasties and modern day. This museum gave me a new appreciation for the lake I had admired so many times from the surface. If you’re visiting Hangzhou, don’t skip this place. It’s calm, beautiful, and deeply inspiring — just like West Lake itself.

Cheeky West Lake Squirrels; Hangzhou
Taking a stroll around the world famous West Lake in Hangzhou is a must for any visitor.
It’s highly recommended to take a boat cruise out on the lake or enjoy a lovely tea package at one of the many tea houses dotted along this lake.
I notice there’s a crowd standing around a tree looking up, so I sidled up to see what the big attraction was.
West Lakes trees has many squirrels living in their canopy and they’re so used to tourists now they will actually climb down the trunk to be hand fed.
For someone that doesn’t have these adorable critters in their home country it’s a fantastic photo opportunity and experience. The area itself is very photogenic and the boat cruise will provide wonderful memories.#westlakehangzhou #squirrel #zhejiang
The Beautiful West Lake in Hangzhou 🇨🇳
The West Lake is located in the city of Hangzhou, China. Here are some tips to have a beautiful day here!
🌟 Walk along the Broken Bridge: After snow in the winter, the bridge appears to be broken but it is only a reflection of the lake and mountain reflecting on each other.
🌟 Go to Leifeng Pagoda for sunset: Climbing to the top of this pagoda gives panoramic views of the entire lake and it’s surroundings. It is especially beautiful at sunset.
🌟 Take a boat cruise around the lake: There are many different boats and cruise tours you can take across the lake. Research online or be spontaneous and choose your route on the day!
🌟 Three Pools Mirroring the Moon: There are three stone pagodas in the water that intertwine with the moonlight! This is also a beautiful area to explore during the day time.
🌟 Su Causeway: Walk along the 2.8km long pathway across the lake. During the springtime you can see the peach blossoms blooming and the green willows. A beautiful photo opportunity!

Hangzhou
Many family friends consider Hangzhou to be one of the most livable cities in China, and I would agree. It is easily accessible via high-speed rail, and getting around the city is fairly convenient and affordable. The most famous area is West Lake, where there are numerous walking trails, historic temples, pagodas, monuments, and tea plantations. Don’t miss Lingyin Temple, a massive Buddhist monastery dating back to 328 AD, and Leifeng Pagoda, which dates back to 975 AD and is a key site in the famous Chinese folktale Legend of White Snake. Aside from West Lake, there are also famous markets and museums (I recommend Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine). Hangzhou is rich in history and culture and was an important center of commerce, so there is no shortage of things to see, taste, and learn.

Serenity in Hangzhou West Lake Park
#discoverchina
If there’s one place that captures the soul of Hangzhou, it’s West Lake. But beyond the postcard-perfect photos and famous viewpoints lies a peaceful escape that feels like a secret — a quiet park tucked along the lake’s edge, where nature and history gently embrace.
Walking through the park, I was surrounded by weeping willows swaying in the breeze, stone bridges arching gracefully over calm waters, and reflections so perfect they looked like paintings. Locals practiced tai chi near the pavilion, their movements flowing like poetry, while others sat beneath cherry blossoms reading quietly, lost in their own world.
There’s a kind of magic here — where time slows down and the city noise disappears. I wandered past ancient pagodas and lotus-filled ponds, breathing in the fresh scent of spring and listening to birdsong echoing in the trees. It’s not just a park, it’s a feeling. A moment of stillness in a world that rarely pauses.
If you're ever in Hangzhou, don’t just visit West Lake — experience it. Find the quiet corners, sit by the water, and let the beauty of this timeless place sink in. It’s more than a destination; it’s a gentle reminder to slow down, breathe, and just be.

Boat ride in Hangzhou - West Lake
If you come to Hangzhou, don’t miss the boat ride from one side of the West Lake to the other. It really is beautiful, especially at night.
Some seatings come with Hangzhou green tea and snacks but you must pay as soon as seated. It’s reasonably priced per person. Tea (hot or cold) will be topped up with either hot or cold water throughout the ride. They do serve other drinks and snacks.
It’s worth paying for this type of seats - we sat upstairs of the boat, enjoyed the best views. The ride took around 20minutes. The boat broadcasts about the history of Hangzhou and the West Lake. We will cherish this experience.#hangzhou #hangzhoutravel #westlakehangzhou
