Brief History This mosque was built between 1671 and 1673 by order of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir, as a symbol of Islamic power and devotion. With a capacity of up to 100,000 worshippers, this mosque is one of the largest in the world and is the largest Mughal era mosque ever built.   During the Sikh reign at the end of the 18th century, this mosque was used as a stable and armory. Then, during the British colonial period, this mosque was used as a military barracks. It was not until 1852, Badshahi Mosque Authority was formed to restore the function of the mosque as a place of worship.  Architecture and Design Badshahi Mosque is an outstanding example of Mughal architecture, with an exterior decorated with red sandstone and white marble inlay. The design features a strong Islamic geometric influence, with three large marble domes and four tall towers in each corner.  The large courtyard of the mosque can accommodate tens of thousands of worshippers and is surrounded by a wall with a tower top.
