There’s something magical about stumbling upon Kōfuku-ji’s five-story pagoda as the morning mist lifts over Nara. The Toadai-ji Temple is a significant temple within the grounds of the Nara Park. I simply took a look of its outside, and did not bother to queue a long line to see the big Buddha statue inside. Suffice to say, the imposing Nandaimon Gate was itself a sight to behold. Meaning the “Great Eastern Temple,” Todai-ji Temple prides itself in the enormous Buddha statue that graces its main hall, the Daibutsuden. The current Daibutsuden was once the record holder for being the world’s largest wooden building. It was a reconstruction in 1692, and it is already a third smaller than the very original Daibutsuden. The original temple of Todai-ji Temple was constructed in 752 A.D. Emperor Shomu commissioned the construction of this temple to rein in a tumultuous time of epidemic and political chaos. It began as the head temple for all the provincial Buddhist temples of Japan. Emperor Kanmu moved the capital to Kyoto to stay away from the Nara Buddhists that became too powerful. The Todai-ji Temple Buddhists were the ones from whom Emperor Kanmu sought to run away. The bronze Buddha statue of Todai-ji Temple is 15 meters tall in a seated posture. It represents Vairocana, a universal Buddha in the Mahayana Buddhism tradition. On the way to the Todai-ji Temple I went through the enormous and imposing Nandaimon Gate, also a wooden structure. On the sides of the Nandaimon Gate inside stand two large Nio Guardian Kings. I arrived into a Nara that was slightly overcast and notably colder than Kyoto. Soon enough, I found my way from the train station to the Japanese homestay called Guesthouse Tamura. I had only one evening in Nara and I chose a Japanese homestay as my accommodation. I had never slept on a tatami before, and it was certainly a novelty that I welcomed. As it turned out, I slept the best in this homey environment as well, out of my week-long stay in Japan. The Tamura Guesthosuse is located in a somewhat obscure back street, but the closest landmark is Hotel Nara. I chose Guesthouse Tamura because of its location. It is walkable to the Nara Park near by. The Garden of the Former Dajyo-in Temple is also right next to the guesthouse, and the scenery there is quite beautiful too. The owners live on the premise, so if you need anything, help is certainly close by. The only thing to note is that the guesthouse is usually closed in the afternoon. Therefore, unless you are already staying indoors at the guesthouse, you would not be able to enter and drop off your belonging during the period around 2pm to 5pm. I was very fortunate that I arrived early in the morning that day and managed to greet the landlady there, and drop off my heavy baggage, before she headed out for her afternoon shopping. The homestay is well known for its traditional Nara breakfast, but I would be rushing back to Osaka for my flight the next day. Nara is a good day trip if you plan on spending a bit of time in Kyoto or in the general Kansai region. The foremost significance of Nara is its being the capital of Japan before Emperor Kanmu moved the imperial seat of government to Kyoto in 794 A.D. With this move marked the beginning of the Heian period. The main reason why Emperor Kanmu moved the capital away from Nara was that the Nara Buddhists were becoming too powerful. They engaged in power struggles with the aristocrats in Nara. The Emperor wanted to detach from the influence of both the Nara Buddhists and the Fujiwara clan in Nara. Nara is important historically as the former capital of Japan, but tourists are actually more drawn to the free roaming deer at Nara Park. The Nara deer, although wild, do greet tourists, especially those who would feed them. There are stalls selling deer crackers to tourists. Please only feed the deer with those kinds of food. In Japanese, deer is called sika. For a very long time the Japanese people revered the deer of Nara as sacred. Legend has it that Takemikazuchi, one of the four gods of Kasuga Grand Shrine, rode a white deer and appeared on Mount Mikasa. The sika deer was so sacred that killing them was a capital offense until 1637. Although the status of the sika deer has ceased being divine since WWII, they are still protected. Please respect nature and do not taunt the deer when you feed them. I went on a day trip from Osaka to Nara via the Aoniyoshi Sightseeing Train (Limited Express by Kintetsu). 🚂 Aoniyoshi Sightseeing Train is Highly Recommended Nara, Japan’s first permanent capital, is a city rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. Todai-ji Temple is a famous ancient temple in Nara, recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. This Buddhist temple was built during the Tenpyo era, around 745 – 752 AD. The entrance to the temple features the Nandai-mon, a wooden gate carved with statues of guardian deities. Inside, you will find the world's largest wooden main hall, which houses the Great Buddha (Daibutsu) statue for worship. The temple grounds are also home to thousands of Sika deer that roam freely in their natural habitat.

#DomesticTravelRecord 🌾《Nara/Naramachi》 I was looking for a place to go for lunch in Naramachi, and by chance I found a Narazuke shop✨ I was completely drawn to this pickle meal with all kinds of pickles on top, so I decided to go right in😍✨ The restaurant is spacious, with both table seats and a Japanese-style room with tatami mats. I was in a Japanese mood, so I went to the tatami room✨ I'm happy to be able to try a little bit of every variety🥰 It seems there were 14 kinds! I love Saikyoyaki, and it came with a small bowl😍 All the pickles were delicious, but I liked the sweet and spicy ginger pickles the best✨✨ The rice comes in a rice container, so you can eat lots🤤🍚 You'll be full when you're done. You can also buy your favorite pickles to take home🙌 When it's not too cold, you can eat them on the terrace🪴 It was delicious!
