The M+ gallery in Kowloon is the centerpiece of the new cultural zone development that is nearning completion in Hong Kong, it will feature many galleries, museums and entertainment areas when completed. It's located beside Kowloon MTR & HSR station and is one of Hong Kong's biggest investments in recent years, aiming to diversift and strengthen the tourist economy. The M+ is without a doubt one of the most impressive art instalations I have visitied and I was really stunned by the scale of the building, the design and aslo the exhibits within. The building is huge but has so much free space so you can cope with the crowds, the rooms are large with high ceilings and there are lots of communal areas to sit down and relax. The galleries fan off from a large central atrium and are all grouped by theme, there are also some stand alone limitied time exhibits that cost extra to view. I got the general admission ticket and spend about 2 hours taking in the standard rooms, and it was totally worth it! A lot of the art can be interpreted at face value, for the more complex moden art pieces there are biliingual descriptions to help you. Entry is around $120, you can buy online in advance or there are ticket machines and a reception as you enter. The building itself is amazing and it has various hidden viewpoints and rest areas to help you take in the city around it. The Mei Ho House was once a public housing estate. In this area of Shek Kip Mei, the early residents lived in the wooden huts of a shanty town during the 1950s, a time when poverty was the norm and survival was the only aspiration. Many of those living in this area were refugees from China’s civil war. The Christmas day of 1953 brought to the residents of the squatter area an enormous disaster. At around 9:30pm in one home a fire started by an accidental drop of a kerosene lamp. It became uncontrollable within ten minutes. The fire continued and destroyed most of the settlement area well into midnight. More than 53,000 people were on the streets within the short span of a few hours. In 1954, the Colonial Government built Mei Ho House to give home to the tens of thousands of whom the fire rendered homeless. The Mei Ho House was the resettlement housing that the Hong Kong Government built on the original site of the settlement area. The original resettlement consisted of eight six-storey resettlement blocks (A-H). They were H-shaped structures, which would become the prototype of the earlier public housing projects in Hong Kong. Indeed, the Shek Kip Mei Fire and the resultant government accommodation of residents marked the beginning of the Colonial Government’s general housing policies in Hong Kong. The first projects were public housing estates. In 2012, Mei Ho House’s Block H stands as the only building that remains on its original site. The Government had plans to revitalize this part of Shek Kip Mei, and Mei Ho House Block H was preserved. It now shines also as the only remaining Mark 1 H-shaped resettlement block in Hong Kong. The Youth Hostels Association now manages the building, providing room and board to visitors as a city hostel. The Kowloon Reservoir is probably not as well-known as the general area that it is in, which is Monkey Hill, as it is fondly known by the locals of Hong Kong. The Kowloon Reservoir was the first of the Kowloon group of reservoirs to begin service, in 1910. The group consists of the Kowloon Reservoir, the Shek Lei Pui Reservoir (1925), Kowloon Reception Reservoir (1926), and the Kowloon Byewash Reservoir (1931). The Kowloon Reservoir, despite its name, is actually the first reservoir in the New Territories. Its curved dam structure is a special feature. Speaking of monkeys, the Macaque Monkeys are native to Hong Kong. There really were many of them once we began the incline up the Kam Shan Country Park. There are myriad temples in Hong Kong and Wong Tai Sin is namely the most-visited temple in all of Hong Kong. I have been there once during January, a time when many of the faithful worshippers would visit the temple to seek fortune reading and pray for health, prosperity and happiness for the year, and it is quite a scene at that time of the year. Wong Tai Sin, named Huang Chuping (Mandarin pinyin) was a real person that lived during the ancient times circa 328 or so. He was a shepherd but reached the ultimate enlightenment and became immortalized. In 1897, the 23rd year of the Guangxu Reign, the spirit of Wong Tai Sin manifested itself in a spirit writing session (like Ouija), and the people began to recognize how accurate the fortune readings were and how much this deity would grant legitimate prayers. The first Wong Tai Sin Temple was built in Guangzhou in 1899. Soon enough, the Wing Tai Sin Temple in Guangzhou became a sacred religious site, with many followers visiting its grounds. The political unrests that soon followed in China necessitated a move of Wong Tai Sin to Hong Kong. A disciple of Wong Tai Sin received the sign that Wong Tai Sin must be moved southward. He brought with him the portrait of Wong Tai Sin and set up the new temple ground in Chuk Yuen in Hong Kong, the area now known as Wong Tai Sin. The Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple was built in 1921. At first, the temple was the home for proper monks and it was only open to the monks and their families. For a few decades the temple grounds were open to followers only on the very first day of the year. Only in 1956 did the temple finally open its doors for public service and worship. In 1969, the Hong Kong Government named the area of Chuk Yuen, where the temple stands, into Wong Tai Sin. In 1904, the Ex-Sham Shui Po Service Reservoir completed. It served the water needs of residents in Kowloon Tong, Sham Shui Po and Tai Hang Tung. The Service Reservoir comes in a round structure. A simple mathematical truth explains this design – the circumference of a round structure enables a larger volume than a rectangular structure with the same perimeter. The top vault of the Service Reservoir is also built in concrete. The rounded arches, along with the brick walls, allowed the loading to be transmitted onto the side structures, then onto the foundation. This is how the structure was able to hold its weight. There is tar on the ground, further sealing the space and prevent cracks. Originally there were 108 granite pillars with red brick arches. After the new wall, there remained 78 pillars. Our tour guide emphasized a few times that, contrary to popular perception, the interior architecture of the Ex-Sham Shui Po Service Reservoir is not of Roman style. It merely imitates the Roman Style. I asked what distinguishes a “truly” Roman and a mere imitation. He said that, in a truly Roman style, there would be no flat surface. The free public tour at the Hong Kong Observatory is rumored to be very difficult for anyone to secure a spot. I was fortunate that I succeeded in signing up in my first attempt. Established in 1883, the Observatory was intended to be a site of observation of astronomical phenomena. As such, it was not, strictly speaking, a meteorological institute. The original intention of the Observatory was to assist maritime navigation by telling time and forecasting storms. The Hong Kong Observatory building is an antique monument. Built in 1884 in the Victorian-Colonial style, the building features two stories in a rectangular block with very classy verandas. The New Centennial Building next door has given home to the scientific wing of the Observatory since 1984. In our tour, we learned plenty of interesting facts about the weather forecasting function of the Observatory. I will discuss just a few of those lessons here. In the front patch, there are a number of functioning and nonfunctioning instruments related to weather forecasting. A set of enormous metal typhoon signals hang there. They are the very testament to how technology changes official practice, resulting in changes of the standard official language. In a bygone time that I still remember, the Hong Kong Observatory’s language reporting typhoons references to the act of “hoisting,” as in “Typhoon Signal No. 8 has been hoisted.” Back in those days, the Hong Kong Observatory would actually hoist these very heavy metal-made typhoon signs on its pole on its Tsim Sha Tsui premise. Those were the days when this hillside location was a high point, where people in approaching ships and surrounding buildings could see the signs. Times have changed, and so has the urban face of Hong Kong. There is no longer any point in “hoisting” the typhoon signals now, as every single building in Tsim Sha Tsui has dwarfed the typhoon pole by now. The Jao Tsung-I Academy celebrates and memorializes the legendary life of Jao Tsung-I, a sinologist of many talents in arts and history. Jao Tsung-I was very accomplished in Chinese learning and fine arts. Born in Chaozhou (Chiu Chow), Jao Tsung-I came from an incredibly wealthy family that had 4 banks. His mother died when he was just 2 years old. At 11 years old, he stopped formal schooling. Instead, he just learned by reading in his home library. At age 22 he became a researcher in Sun Yatsen University. In Hong Kong, he brushed shoulders with the literati. In 1949, he immigrated to Hong Kong. At age 35, he was already a professor at University of Hong Kong on classical literature, with research in a broad spectrum of historic Chinese interests such as dance, music, classical Chinese, the arts, and oracle script. Much of the learning in these academic fields are reflected in his artwork. He dedicated his life to the learning and teaching of classical Chinese. Innumerable awards and honors have been conferred to him for his work. Jao Tsung-I passed away at the very advanced age of 100 in 2018. He did live to see the day of opening of the Academy that celebrates his life. He left behind a rich heritage that constitutes the core substance of the Jao Tsung-I Academy today. There are three sections in the Jao Tsung-I Academy. The very upper section is up on the hill. With five buildings there they are now serving as the Heritage Lodge, a hotel. In the middle section, the buildings were once the wards for the prisoners and the patients. In the Lower section, the blocks retain their original red brick appearance. Together these buildings have had a long history in serving various purposes for the government and the community throughout its 114 years, pretty much as the needs arose. As the former Lai Chi Kok Hospital, the structures of the Jao Tsung-I Academy were built between 1921 and 1924. All of the structures are of red brick, a common feature for colonial-era buildings in Hong Kong. For Hong Kong locals, the Kowloon Park is a good venue for a nice afternoon reading session, a place for sitting-down after shopping at the nearby Park Lane, or otherwise swimming at its swimming pool. We take its leisure purpose for granted and few people look for its historic significance beyond its role as a park. I have never known the history of Kowloon Park until recently, when I came across photographs of the war relics on site. The predecessor of the Kowloon Park is the Whitfield Barracks. At the time, the location at which Kowloon Park now occupies was strategically advantageous for defense purposes. It started as a military base as one could overlook the Kowloon side of the Victoria Harbour there. It was meant to be a temporary encampment in the beginning. When the British took over Kowloon in 1861, they named it the Whitfield Barracks and it became a permanent military site. At first, the Indian garrison was stationed at the Whitfield Barracks. At one point, the Whitfield Barracks had more than 85 buildings. Of all of these buildings, only four barrack blocks and the battery were preserved to the present. Given this early history of the Kowloon Park, there is still a site in the current park where military relics stand. The Kowloon West II Battery was built during 1878 and 1880. It was built in concrete. There are three gun emplacements, a command center, ammunition storage spaces and a machinery room. Each gun emplacement was fixed with a 7-inch cannon. The use of the fortress ceased in 1916. Lei Yue Mun, in Chinese, means “The Carp Gate.” Situated on the eastern channel that leads into Victoria Harbour, the Lei Yue Mun Pass is wedged between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. Lei Yue Mun has thus long been recognized for its strategic importance throughout history. The four villages in the area were once engaged in the quarry business. Together, these villages were known as “the Four Hills.” The quarry business thrived during the late Qing dynasty. At its heyday, the rocks turned up from the quarry would ship to Shunde in China, and some even made their way to Europe. The industry became obsolete in the 1980s. By the 1980s or so, the Hong Kong Government would develop Lei Yue Mun into a haven for seafood dining as well as an industrial area. The ruins of the Old Quarry thus becomes the quiet and forgotten witness to the industrial past of Hong Kong at the easternmost coast of the Lei Yue Mun Pass. At the current site of the 1881 Heritage, only the structures at the highest level are heritage buildings, and those are the the Main Building of the Former Marine Police Headquarters, the Old Kowloon Fire Station, the Fire Station Accommodation Block, the two cannons and the Time Ball Tower. All of these structures are declared monuments. The Main Building The Hong Kong Marine Police occupied the Main Building between the 1880s to 1996, except during the Japanese Occupation. In 1996, the Marine Region moved to its current headquarters in Sai Wan Ho. The whole former venue at the 1881 heritage gave home to the Commander of the Marine Police, as well as the Captain Superintendent of the Police. The Time Ball TowerIn 1884, the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was established. In that same year, the Time Ball Tower was constructed for the purpose of indicating the standard time for the marine community that sailed the then very busy Victoria Harbor. The Time Ball is of a six-foot diameter and mounted on a pole above the tower. There is a ball-raising mechanism. At 1pm sharp every day (except Sundays and public holidays), the ball would be raised manually and then dropped. This was done so that the vessels at the harbor could synchronize their on-board chronometers at the sight of the drop of the ball. The accuracy of the timing was kept meticulously. I visited the urban coffee roasters twice. It is a good spot for coffee If you are in and around Kowloon. Being a speciality coffee store they have several options in coffee. The prices are decent. I tried their latte for a test and it was on the strong side just I prefer. Some fine Ethiopian and south American varieties going 80 hkd upwards too. After a decent first coffee experience I decided to stop by for a breakfast to explore thevl food menu with a friend. We had the eggs and salmon toast, the pancakes with berries and matcha lattes. I rarely went to Kwun Tong with my mother for a walk on holiday. I suddenly remembered that there is a good Western restaurant here. Let's take my mother to chill. 📍West Kowloon Art Park Hong Kong is well-known for its stunning night views. Recently, I visited a night view spot that's becoming popular among the MZ generation. Around West Kowloon Art Park, there are grassy areas where many people lay down mats to enjoy the view, have snacks, or eat late-night meals. The view is so amazing that just sitting on a mat feels like a healing experience. I took the subway to visit the West Kowloon Art Park, but the route was more complicated than I expected. If you're planning to go at night, I recommend going with a group rather than alone, as the path feels a bit secluded. Alternatively, taking the bus might be a better option than the subway. There are many night view spots in Hong Kong, but experiencing the summer night atmosphere by laying down a mat at the up-and-coming West Kowloon Art Park is highly recommended.

Three idiots tasted the noble and excellent Japanese ramen at Elements Shopping Mall There are many ramen restaurants in Hong Kong, most of which are located in busy areas or the city center. I saw many people recommending this ramen restaurant in Elements Shopping Mall online. The set meal for two people is not expensive. I decided to give it a try. The most impressive thing was the sea bream white soup ramen, which was rich but not greasy. Ramen set for two 1. The exterior of the Hao Mei Apartment in Yau Ma Tei looks like a residential building and is easy to walk past. The nearby streets are mainly filled with shops selling cooking supplies/tools, which are all similar; fortunately, there is a hotel sign downstairs. The hotel lobby is located on the 2/F of the building. Access downstairs also requires a key card or the lobby door lock, so the security level is good. The building has more than 10 floors, with only two rooms on each floor. This time I stayed in Room A on the 7th floor. Firstly, the equipment is not luxurious but rather simple. The room is indeed very large (I rented this room specifically because of its size). Strictly speaking, the whole room is about 450 feet and is mainly divided into the entrance, kitchen, living room, bathroom and two rooms. It is a whole unit and is absolutely the first choice for family trips. This room is big enough to accommodate 5-6 people or more. Moreover, you can cook by yourself and enjoy family fun. The layout, size and spacing of the room are very satisfactory. The decoration design is simple, not particularly exquisite or fancy. One thing worth noting is that the hotel's operating style is more like a B&B.
