Miners Castle, Upper Peninsula, MI, USA One of the most famous landmarks along the Pictured Rocks National Lake shoreline, and it's the only cliff area in the park accessible by vehicle and just a short hike with two viewing platforms. It’s a hidden bay of Sai Kung, next to Sheung Yiu Trail and close to high island reservoir. It’s special with its half moon shape concrete embankment. Starting point located in Sai Kung Country Park, follow the signs to Pak Tam Chung Nature Trail（北潭涌自然教育徑）/ Sheung Yiu Family Walk （上窯家樂徑）, passing a beautiful lake-like creeks heading to Sheung Yiu Folk Museum and the swamp with mangroves. First stop would be Hei Tsz Wan （起子灣）pier. From there, we spontaneously took an adventure trip, coasteering to the direction of Po Kwu Wan. It’s actually pretty straightforward, just walk along the coastline. We started early on Sunday morning, bump into a handful of people at Po Kwu Wan and few groups at Yuen Ng Fan view point, only a couple of fishermen while coasteering and non when hiking out to Man Yee Road. From Liang King Estate 🚶, walk through the back of Ke Liang Primary School, cross the road and you will see the entrance of the mountain road. The first section has been a ramp, halfway you will see the gazebo, and all the way you will reach Liang Tin Au, where you can see the view of Tuen Mun, you can take a break here. Then walk straight along the road to reach Pineapple Mountain Canyon⛰, but the mountain twin likes to challenge😅, so I chose the shortcut that requires climbing🧗🏻. Go to the entrance of Pineapple Mountain Canyon % will see a warning sign saying "This road is dangerous, do not enter without permission", because the weathering and erosion phenomenon is very serious, the mountain road becomes narrow, we do not have to worry, someone has already opened a new path next to it, another mountain road is very wide 😃. But there is a lot of gravel along the road, the weathering phenomenon is also getting more and more serious, be careful along the way🥺. When kids have too much screen time (few hours of zoom classes), sports centres & indoors activities closed, and there’s no playground for them to waste some energy… they became emotionally unstable, unable to focus and basically showing impact on their mental health and overall well-being. Please, I’m not interested in adding on screen time, so don’t recommend the online exercise or switch’s just dance/ sport related game. I still prefer outdoor activities with kids. We normally do it early to avoid the crowd. Trust me, 80-90% of the people prefer sleep in and starting their day after brunch. Hence, when we took a hike to Brick Hill, it’s pretty much just us and a handful of other hikers. Speaking of Brick Hill or better known as Nam Long Shan is a hill near Wong Chuk Hang, overlooking Ocean Park, deep water bay and sham wan. Found another family friendly hiking trail ! It’s a round trip, easy route with tasty snacks and food in between. It’s Sunday, to avoid crowd, we arrived at 9.30am, parked our car at Fanling then hail a taxi to Luk Keng. The hiking trail is pretty straight forward. Got off at Luk Keng’s BB happy store, walk along Bride’s Pool Road, then take the left road towards Fat Kee Store. The starling inlet/ mangrove swamps are on your left at all time while walking on Tiu-Tang-Long Path. Half way through, there are stairs headed towards the other side of the mountain, once over you’ll reach Fung Hang in no time. There’s a public toilet at the entrance of the village next to a cafe. The stalls along Fung Hang Pier selling local made snacks such as 茶粿 (cha gwo) which is stuffed tea cake made with sticky rice flour, 砵仔糕 (put chai go) which is red bean pudding, pumpkin cake etc. Do give it a try ! I regretted not buying more as we have lunch plans at Kuk Po. Let’s talk about this restaurant at Kuk Po. It operates on weekends only. Booking and pre-order are highly recommended. It’s Hakka cuisine. Bellevue, MI, USA One of the most fascinating abandoned places I've come to explore in Michigan is the Burt Portland Cement Company in Bellevue just north of Battle Creek. The Cement Company operated from 1906-1928 but they suffered from bankruptcy and ended up closing down. The factory was never torn down though and it just sits there and waits, left to rot over the next decades. The old ruins stands hidden among the brush, weeds, and trees. There are lots of underground tunnels and tall brick walls to climb as well as a few sets of steps. Alot of it has been spray painted with graffiti all over the place and been littered. It's become a place where local teens go to have campfires, explore, and cause trouble. There are many things to watch out for if you go here to explore like random holes, poison ivy, and sharp shards of material. It's cool to adventure there and see how nature has taken over and there's also a small lake next to it that has a boardwalk you can check out as well. Lower Tahquamenon Falls, U.P. MI, USA This is a must-see destination, especially for families with kids! If going in the summer you can get in the river and swim along the falls. The easy boardwalk to the bridge offers fantastic views of the five smaller waterfalls that cascade down the river—its breathtaking. Once you cross the bridge, you can explore the island section of the falls, where the hiking trail gets a little more rugged because you'll be walking along the rivers edge right next to the falls, and some of the rocks can be slippery. The beauty of the landscape is so serene. The trail goes into the woods, with several platforms along the way that offer different perspectives of the falls. It’s the perfect spot for a scenic hike that is both relaxing and exciting —ideal for visitors of all ages. Castle Rock, St. Ignace, MI, USA Wow, what a view! The hike up is a bit of a challenge, especially for little ones but there are different areas with benches for resting along the way and and it's totally worth it even if you have to take breaks. When you reach the top you’re treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the Straits of Mackinac, Mackinac Island, and the surrounding forest. Definitely put this one on your must-do list while visiting the U.P. It’s the perfect combination of history, natural beauty, plus a good workout! One of the coolest parts about climbing Castle Rock is obviously reaching the top and seeing the view but then seeing the American flag proudly waving in the wind. It’s a great spot to pause, take in the incredible view, and snap some photos with the flag. After you’ve gotten back down to the shop be sure to go to the front counter desk and grab a sticker as a memento of your climb. It's a small but fun tradition—definitely a nice keepsake to remember your hike up! Lost River Cave, Bowling Green, Kentucky, USA Lost River Cave is a 7 mile cave system. The river originates outside of the cave and flows into it. The cave contains one of the largest natural entrances in the Eastern U.S. Go book a 45 minute boat tour with a guided walk along the river’s edge to learn about the history of the cave and its surroundings. You will learn so much and get to see the blue hole(it was more green the day we went because all of the sediments coming up from the rain) after that you will arrive at the massive cave entrance where you board the boat. The cave is gorgeous and at the beginning to get in, you have to duck your head and sit pretty far down in the boat and dunk as to not hit your head before it opens up. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and such a joy. She made lots of jokes and answered all of our questions. We very much enjoyed learning about the history and fun facts of the cave. We also got to see two little bats hanging out in there plus I even got a drop on my head and my leg from the water dripping down which the guide said was a lucky kiss from the cave! The tour is fairly short but perfect for first timers to get an experience of what it's like being in a cave. Charleston Falls Preserve, Ohio, MI, USA The tallest falls in Ohio originates from a small underground spring, the stream creating the falls plummets almost 40 feet into a small gorge. The hike through the woods is relatively short and it's on a trail through a beautiful wooded area on gravel and is well maintained. The waterfall was gorgeous and did not disappoint, you could see it from an observation deck at the bottom and also from at the top. We were suprised that there was a small limestone cave that you could see the hole of and was able to climb up alittle into the entrance hole but you could not go all the way through as it's fairly small and is filled with water. All of the rock formations surrounding the falls are so pretty and we followed them along a trail which then lead us to top of the creek where there's a wooden bridge and you can wander down into the water. There were several rocks to step on and cross and it was such a picturesque area. It was my children's favorite part of the park because they got to put their boats in the water and send them down stream a couple of times. The Forest Giants, Kentucky, USA You must visit the three wooden giants located in Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest. Bernheim is a 16,000+ acre arboretum, forest, and nature preserve with art, wildlife, lakes…and giants! Founded in 1929 with the mission of “connecting people with nature" it sure does just that. With many beautiful flowers and art pieces surrounding the grounds, the giants are designed in harmony with nature to illustrate the scale of wonder. Danish artist Thomas Dambo’s sculptures are made using repurposed wood and natural materials. The giants include a Mama giant name Loumari and her two children, Little Nis and Little Elina, along with her third baby Giant, who's in her belly. Mama Loumari was relaxing up against a tree, holding her belly, and enjoying nature next to their lair with collectibles she’s saved including a dragon’s skull, a unicorn horn, and many other cool treasures! The two giant children are out exploring the forest. Little Elina loves to play with rocks so she had a rock in her hand and her rock garden of boulders designed in the shape of a feather next to her. Which my kids loved hoping along. You can also leave gifts for her in her dreadlock hair so we picked some dandelions and tied them on. Little Nis is fascinated with his own reflection which he just discovered as he is at the edge of the lake looking in the water. We all enjoyed checking them out, they were super interesting to inspect and it was an adventure hiking to find them. We saw geese, turtles and fish along the way. Plan ahead alot of time to explore the forest to see all of the other art installations and flowers and the beauty that nature has to offer as I know we did miss out on alot. Dead River Falls, U.P., MI, USA Dead River Falls is a scenic hike that spans a section of about a half mile of river, the river drops for many miles until it reaches Lake Superior but along part of a half mile long stretch is a series of beautiful waterfalls. We tried to make it in time before sunset but failed so unfortunately these pictures aren't the best because it got dark fast. Although we were not able to hike the whole stretch of the falls up towards the top where they start it was still worth going and checking out. I believe we hiked into the end of them and got to one of the last drops as they cascade down. There were alot of tree roots and ledges and rocks to climb on and around so it was alittle sketchy but made for a fun journey! If we ever go that way again we will make more time and go earlier in the day to check it all out and enjoy it for longer. Peninsula Point Lighthouse, MI, USA Take a well worth drive off the beaten path down a long and narrow(single car) bumpy, dirt road out to the tip of the peninsula point and you will find the most gorgeous lighthouse. While it is no longer in use as a lighthouse it is free to climb. We all climbed the 40 foot spiral staircase to the top to find beautiful panorama views of Lake Michigan. The rocky limestone shoreline of the peninsula yields fossils estimated at 400-500 million years old. Walking along the shoreline out towards another peninsula you can find many rocks with fossils. Peninsula Point is also a popular spot to see Monarch Butterflies before their migration. We got lucky when we visted and were able to see a ton in the trees hiding out of the wind. Sugarloaf Mountain, Marquette, MI, USA What a nice hiking adventure! The main trail was very well maintained and it was a combination of paths and stairs and benches along the way. It was a decent hike with stunning views of Lake Superior at the top. Tackling all of the stairs was well worth the climb for the views. There was a total of three viewing areas at the top at around 1,000 feet above sea level. The first observation deck faced southward towards the gorgeous lake, Presque Isle Park, and the city of Marquette. It was the best view of them all and it was a beautiful day to take it in. Honestly we all just wanted to hang out up there all day long to soak in all of the beautiful views. Finally having some time to share this special route we took after Cheung Po Tsai Cave. It’s a one way to Cheung Po Tsai Cave and back, so you could go to the cave first, then take another route back. After the cave, walk back the way you came, until you see a stairs (right opposite of the stalls where people put down “stuff” for sale) on your right, quite steep down. It’ll lead the way to a walking path right behind of Sai Yuen Adventure Camp. When it’s low tide, you could keep walking, across Po Yue Wan and head up to the direction of Reclining Rock. From here, it’s pavements all the way along Cheung Chau Family Walk. At the junction near Pak Tso Wan, take left turn and continue walking back to the town. Distance: probably 3km Duration: less than 1.5 hours inc photo time Scenic: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ of 5 Difficulty: 2 out of 5 It’s a short and easy walk, toddler can definitely walk their way without having to carry at all. We have a 2.5 year old amateur walker with us, and still managed to finish the route in less than 1.5 hours. How to get to the starting point: After arriving at Cheung Chau Pier, you have 3 options~ 1. Take the boat at the pier next to the Ferry Pier, tell them you’re heading to Sai Wan 西灣. Your hike begins right next to the Sai Wan Pier. 2. Take a walk heading to Sai Wan direction, which is on your right once you are out from the pier. It’s approximately 20-25 minutes walk. 3. Rent a tricycle or something, lock it at the Sai Wan Pier or somewhere there and pick up when you’re done, cycle back to return your bike.
