#traveldiaries When your a first timer in Xinjiang and Urumqi is your first stop then I can also recommend you to tie Turpan into your itinerary. It is so different from Urumqi where you will see green mountain. In Turpan, you will see a vast desert and massive sand mountains or rock mountains . Such a massive contrast which you will enjoy. Day 0- Arrival in Turpan, so we just chilled and we just wandered around where our hotel was. We went to the downtown bazaar, Antique and Turpan and ate local food. Nothing much that requires a lot of energy and time. Day 1- we rented a car and a driver to go to 5 places. 1. Flaming mountains- this is one of the top tourist spot if you search about what to see in Turpan 2. Bezeklik 1000 Buddha Caves- you will see caves of paintings and murals of Buddha here.. they are severely damaged which is quite sad. 3. Xinjiang Soil Art Museum- Wow, this stop was really our favorite and we spent so much time here. 4. Tuyuk Village- nestled in the middle of the desert , you will find a Uyghur village where apparently Islam started in China. 5. Gaochang Ruins- this is the biggest preserved ancient city ruins in Xinjiang. Remember, every tourist spot mentioned above has entrance fees. Fees range from 40-45 per person but there are scenic areas in which you may spend more for shuttle cars or for extra activities. Day 2- Rented a car again with a driver. These are our stops. 1. Emin Minerat (Sugong Tower) -the tower here is the oldest Islamic tower in Xinjiang. A really quiet places. There are tombs surrounding the mosques and the tower as well in different shapes. 2. Ancient tombs of Atsana- this is quite a sad place really. You will see a lot of holes in the ground which makes you realize that they are still digging up more mummies here. Some of the mummies that were dug up are displayed in Turpan Museum. 3. Karez Wells- this is such a fascinating visit. It will show you how determined the people to thrive by making a water underground channel just to live in this deserted and dry place. It is one of the 3 massive water projects in China. 4. Jiaohe Ancient City Ruins- wow! 🤩 coming to this place gave me goosebumps more than our visit in Gaochang Ruins. Jiaohe is the best preserved ancient city ruins in the world and seeing it in person is just surreal. 5. Houyun Valley- this place makes me feel like I went to Mars. #traveldiaries Urumqi is the capital city of Xinjiang and it is the perfect introduction to Xinjiang. Let me share to you an itinerary that will take you to breathtaking places around urumqi. Day 0- Arrival in the hotel and just explore the neighborhood you’re in. Try local snacks right away. The lamb skewers taste divine in Xinjiang so please don’t miss this paired with Nang bread . Visit the International Grand Bazaar and have your dinner there. It is so vibrant and you can shop there until you drop. 😊 Day 1- we have booked a tour to the Grand Canyon of Tianshan Mountains. Trip app offers tickets and shuttle bus tickets so just have a look through the app. Your hotel and hostel will have recommendations for tour operators for you anyway. If you are an anxious person, better book in advance but I don’t think they ever run out of tickets coz there aren’t a lot of tourists in Urumqi and it’s scenic spots yet. 7:30 was out call time at the meeting point. No worries, they will contact you in advance for this tour’s instructions. This is pretty much whole day activity so do not book any other stuff on the same day. Day 2- another full day tour. This time , you will go to the most and highly recommended tourist spot in Urumqi which is the Heavenly Lake. This is also a guided tour. Trip app has available offers for this too but then again you can also book through your hostel or hotel. Seriously, Heavenly lake and its surrounding mountain is like a massive painting. It is indeed breathtaking. Anyway, before you reach the heavenly lake, you will stop at a Kazakh village which is really interesting to see. You get to learn how the Kazakh minority live, culture and tradition. You will arrive back to tour hotel in the evening already so depending on your energy level you can go for a cultural show in the international grand bazaar. It isn’t as famous as the other scenic spots in Turpan but I believe that it won’t take along time before this will get discovered by the masses. What a find and what an adventure. We came here by a rented car with a driver and he knows where in the canyon is great and safe for exploring . We explored more deep into the canyon for about 30 minutes and we figured we had to go back where the car is waiting for us so we could see more and explore more of this hidden gem. #traveldiaries After seeing all the mummies at the Turpan Museum, it is just very interesting to see where they were dug up. It is such a massive cemetery and they are not yet done with their project here. We only saw 3 tombs that were open to the public and some were still just a hole in the ground which is an indication that they are still in the process of digging up more. My visit there was interesting but at the same time, I felt so bad and sad. If you are into central asian stuff from home decors down to food that is so different from the Chinese cuisine that we all know. I genuinely enjoy walking around the grand bazaar, even bought a hand made carpet. So lively, bright and oozing with culture. A Must visit place while in Urumqi, definitely. No entrance fee. #traveldiaries In the middle of the Gobi Desert lies the ancient city if Gaochang. This ancient city has been abandoned for about 1000 years ago but people nowadays can inky watch the remnants of how the city used to look like. It is really massive and I don’t recommend it walking around there , just go with a shuttle bus to take you to different interesting spot inside the city ruins. Tips: 1. Cover up and apply sun cream as there is no shade here at all. You’m surely get sunburnt if you’re not covered up. 2. Do not wander beyond the concrete roads as they are not sure if some areas are hallow underground so just stay on the concrete roads. 3. Bring water- so hot here and there are bo shops around so be sure to pack your self a bottle of water. Ticket price: 40 Length of Visit: 1 hour (since it is a guided trip with the shuttle bus and you’re together with the other tourists so you kind of just follow the majority. It is then dipped in the sand u til it boils! It is so fascinating to see. The coffee taste? Well , definitely for people who love that strong kick of black coffee. The sesame seeds and the date puree around the cup help with the bitterness of the coffee. Really strong but a good experience. #traveldiaries This is Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves and it is one of the top tourist spot in Turpan. What can I say? Honestly, it is quite sad to see how severely damaged these precious painting and murals of different Buddhas. Though the paintings are mostly damaged you could still see and imagine how grand and beautiful they used to be. The location is beautiful nestled in the middle of the desert and a river. I have found a deeper appreciation to all three archeologists who have found this place and their efforts to still preserve what is left after everything was looted . Not all the caves are open just to set your expectations straight. Apparently, this cave represents the start of Buddhism in China. If you are in Turpan and if you have an extra time, I can recommend to visit this place. Length of visit: 30 minutes- 1 hour is enough Ticket price: 40 rmb. How to get there: we just rented a car and a driver for the entire day to visit different tourist spots in Turpan. The price depends in how long and how far are you going that day. #traveldiaries The Flaming Mountain is huge and this is the most famous spot where all the tourists come. There are many ways to enjoy the beauty of the flaming mountain. 1. Wander around by yourself without spending extra money. 2. Take a helicopter ride for around 3 minutes - expensive but if it is what you want to experience then GO FOR IT! 😊 3. Ride a jeep or a buggy- there are a lot of four wheels vehicles there that you can rent for a limited time. 4. Take an aeroplane- Same as the helicopter 5. Ride a donkey, a horse or a camel- the price really depends on how long will you be riding them. The scenic area where you can take all your photos is not massive at all so you can stay here as quick or as long as you like. I like the museum before you enter the scenic area. I really appreciated that. You will learned about the scholars who walked on the silk road and did some notable jobs during their time. The story of the Journey to the West is very interesting. The buildings are totally new and decorated with light, they look so beautiful when the night time comes. There are some shops and restaurants that are open already. This was not included in our scenic spot stops but our driver somehow stopped here and we’re glad he did because it became one of the best scenic spot we have ever been in Turpan. The entire area is massive, there is an indoor one and the rest is just outdoor kind of museum. You get into a shuttle car and you get driven to a valley where in you see some earthen houses, rivers and even some resident s doing their own daily normal life. Make sure ti visit this place while in Turpan. How to come here: we just rented a car and a driver for a day and visited 5 scenic spots for 350 rmb . The rate depends on how many scenic spots you will visit and how far they are. Ask your hostel or hotel to help you book this. #traveldiaries The hostel is really excellently and aesthetically designed. Every corner you look in this hostel is just picture perfect. The rooms are so beautiful and comfortable on top of that. The common areas are pleasing to the eyes and you can just relax and chill wherever you want and feel like. They also have a cafe/ bar so it is very convenient to order since coffee shops are not really common in Turpan. The hostel has a golden retriever dog that is really adorable and friendly. They also offer tours , either you want to share with other tourists or you want to rent an entire car yourself. The hostel can arrange that for you. They have all of these information on their bulletin board. This hotel is such a great example that you don’t need to stay in a 5 star hotel to be accommodated well. The owner of this hotel is such a nice and kind woman. She helped us with things like recommending us places to see and even recommended us a tour agent. She even helped me order something online. This hotel maybe is a little bit far from the downtown area but everything you need is in close proximity and the view of our hotel room is priceless. #traveldiaries Coming to Urumqi I think I have prepared enough and researched enough but I still felt so surprised and delighted with all the things and scenery that I saw. I was pleasantly surprised. This is Swan Lake located inside the Tianshan Grand Canyon. There are multiple scenic spots inside the grand canyon and I this is the top of it all. This about 40 minutes away from the main entrance of the canyon which is at the foot of the mountain. Shuttle busses are included in your ticket price. When you reach Swan lake there is an opportunity to ride horses for extra cash. We did’t try it as we just enjoyed walking around and taking it all in. The view of the scow capped mountain, the lake, the grassland and everything that is in this place makes you feel calm! So , I highly recommend for you to visit the grand canyon. It is very fascinating to see the lives of the ancient people living in Jaiohe. The entire village depicts their daily lives like the money , jewelry and the clothing they used. It also displays their livelihood like the process of drying the grapes and turning them into raisins. It is really a brilliant idea to show this village replica first before heading to the ruins. Make sure to but the All inclusive tickets that includes the Ancient village. Ticket price: around 150 which includes the ruins, ancient village and the shuttle bus. Enjoy! Tip: if you’re a foreign traveler I suggest that you join a tour group or you rent a car with a driver that would drive you to these scenic spots.
