Beautiful Old Town in Shaoxing
Shaoxing is a popular day trip destination in the Zhejiang province, as you can get there in as fast as 15min on the high-speed train from Hangzhou/ Suzhou. And apart from being the old residence of Luxun, the legendary Chinese novelist, and the origin of Shaoxing yellow wine, they have a beautiful old town named Anchang Ancient Town, which is a thousand-year-old town featured recently on CCTV.
Once you set foot in the old town, it’s like you enter the ancient era, with red lanterns hung all around and wooden houses built along the river. If weather allows, it would be nice to hop on the manual boat to experience the town like a real local!

Lu Xun’s Native Place: A Journey Through Time and Legacy
#chinatrip #shaoxing
Visiting Lu Xun's Native Place on a hot autumn day was like stepping into the world of one of China's greatest literary figures, despite the bustling crowds. The streets were filled with visitors eager to trace the roots of Lu Xun’s life and works, creating a lively yet nostalgic atmosphere. As I wandered through the well-preserved old houses, ancestral halls, and historical landmarks, I could almost picture the scenes of Lu Xun’s childhood, which would later inspire his powerful writings. The heat of the day was softened by the charm of the traditional architecture—whitewashed walls and dark-tiled roofs, set against the golden glow of the season. Though crowded, the energy of the place added to its vibrancy, reminding me of the enduring influence of Lu Xun’s legacy. Amid the hum of tourists, there was a quiet reverence for the man who had shaped modern Chinese literature, making the visit both meaningful and memorable
Shusheng Guli: A Timeless Dialogue with History and Art
#chinatrip #shaoxing
When I stepped into Shusheng Guli (the Hometown of the Sage of Calligraphy), it felt as though I had traveled back in time, engaging in a heartfelt conversation with history itself. Every brick, every blade of grass, and every tree seemed to whisper stories of the past. True to its name, this ancient district was once home to Wang Xizhi, the revered “Sage of Calligraphy.” Walking along the cobbled stone paths, I couldn’t help but imagine Wang Xizhi gracefully wielding his brush, his spirit brimming with creativity and elegance. The entire area is steeped in the essence of calligraphy, enveloping visitors in its artistic charm. The architecture preserves the timeless beauty of Jiangnan’s water towns, with white walls, black-tiled roofs, stone bridges, and gently flowing canals that create an idyllic, poetic scene. The serene river reflects the ancient buildings along its banks, like a living ink painting, while the centuries-old stone bridges silently witness the passage of time and generations.
A Rainy Day in Shan Xing
#chinatrip #shaoxing
Today, an unexpected cold snap swept through Shaoxing, folding away spring’s warmth and bringing a sharp chill. Amidst the misty rain, the town reveals its true Jiangnan charm, like an elegant ink painting. The twenty-degree temperature drop feels not just like weather, but a gentle echo through time.
Walking through this scene, I find myself deeply moved by its natural, unadorned beauty and resilient grace. In the rain, Shaoxing feels like a classical poem, timeless and serene. Here, time slows, worries fade, and my soul merges with the misty landscape, finding peace in its quiet, enduring beauty.
Anchang Ancient Town: A Festive Heaven of Tradition and Flavour
Anchang Ancient Town is one of the most vibrant and authentic old towns in our hearts. Located in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, it is famous for its festive atmosphere and is known as the 'New Year's Goods Town.' The ancient streets of Anchang are built along the river, lined with traditional blue-brick, grey-tiled buildings, exuding the unique charm of the Jiangnan water towns. Its handicrafts and local delicacies attract visitors from all directions, especially in the twelfth lunar month when people flock here to shop for the New Year. The most popular goods include soy-sauce duck, preserved meat, and sausages, with every shop displaying rows of cured foods, filling the air with an enticing aroma. Traditional crafts like sugar figurine-making, soy sauce production, and rice wine brewing continue to this day, adding to the town’s strong festive spirit and lively atmosphere. As the New Year approaches, the streets and river paths are bustling with people busy picking out goods, preparing for the holiday. Anchang Ancient Town is not only a tourist attraction but also a place filled with holiday spirit and the cultural essence of Jiangnan life. #bucketlist #Anchang #Jiangnan #shaoxing #travelchina
An 85km bike ride from Shengzhou to Keqiao
The area around Shengzhou county in Shaoxing is blessed with endless scenery in all directions. Heading north to Keqiao takes you up and over the mountains on masterful paved roads. The views are stunning. As you descend the mountains you come across Pingshui town which has tons have places to swim, camp and hike. Theres also the Pingyang temple. A massive temple with a very old history. You can hear the monks chanting from 500m away. When you finally finish with the natural scenery, you arrive in yuecheng and keqiao. Great food, cafes, shopping etc. i was in the mood for a bagel and cream cheese so i stopped in at Tim’s there. And later at night decided to go for some fantastic Pakistani food.
A great route. I’ve driven this route many times. Whether a sunny, hot day or a drizzling cloudy day, this road never fails to amaze. I’m very impatient when it comes to photos. So all my pictures are taken somewhat hastily on my iPhone 13 have not been edited or filtered in anyway. So what you see here is true natural scenery and does not do justice to the actual views seen with your eyes. You will not be disappointed if you go see for yourself. Enjoy! #mountains #tripblazers #shaoxing #Shengzhou #summerdays #roadtrip

Nice Hotel Surrounded by Greenery, Shaoxing
I stayed at Mirror Lake Hotel during National week and had a lovely time there. I chose this hotel for its proximity to the Keyan Scenic Area which is literally behind, a 5-10 mins walk from to the entrance!
The hotel is surrounded by greenery and the atmosphere is quiet and peaceful! You can stroll around and find some benches and swings to chill! 🌿
My room was spacious and very clean! The bathroom surprisingly also had a bathtub 🛁 and free toiletries such as bath salts, shower gel, shampoo, toilet paper and amenities such as towels, hair dryer, magnifying mirror… When you check in, you’re given a mini pouch with toothpaste, toothbrush, cotton pads and buds and a comb.
The bed was soft and comfy! You’re also provided with water bottles, black tea, green tea, instant coffee & sugar. They also offer a plate fo fruits every day as well as a small bowl of soup every evening. The room is cleaned every day. There’s also a small balcony.
The breakfast buffet is a mix of mostly Chinese and
western options. I believe there’s so much variety for everyone. Breakfast was included in my booking and I’d recommend it as there aren’t many options around. KFC, Starbucks and a few Chinese restaurants are at the entrance of the scenic area, but that’s pretty much it.
There’s a guy who stands by the entrance of the hotel and is pretty much the only one who speaks English. He’s very helpful and will guide you all the way to your room 👍🏼 I was also offered a goodie bag upon checkout with some Shaoxing specialities 😊
I’ll defo recommend this hotel for a getaway in a quiet environment or if visiting the Keyan Scenic Area is your main priority. Otherwise, downtown Shaoxing is about 20-30 mins by taxi 🚕.
Address ➡️ Mirror Lake Hotel, 君澜.绍兴鉴湖大酒店
How to go ➡️ I was coming from Hangzhou so took Shaoxing metro line 1 connected to Hangzhou metro line 5. I got off at Mingzhu Square 🚇, 明珠广场 and took a taxi to the hotel for about 20 mins.

A Must Visit Gem in Shaoxing 🛶
I went to Shaoxing once on a day trip, but had no idea about this wonderful place until I stumbled on pictures of it! The Keyan Scenic Area is HUGE! It consists of three parts:
1️⃣ Tiangong Stone Buddha
2️⃣ Jianhu Scenic Area
3️⃣ Luzhen old town
I went there during National week and made sure to arrive as early as possible, up to booking a hotel nearby. I started with the Tiangong Budhha which is where most people flock! The Stone Buddha was very impressive 👌🏼 The atmosphere was so calm and peaceful 😌 until the crowd arrived an hour later. There’s also relics, colorful paintings depicting history and temples.
As you walk further, you’ll reach the Jian Lake Scenic area which was so picturesque with mountains and nature as backdrop! Wupeng boats native to Shaoxing on the lake were so charming! The entrance ticket includes 2 boat rides. The first will take you to a small island which felt rather plain. There was a restaurant, yellow wine sellers and a glass bridge which required an extra 20¥. I just walked to the exit where I caught the other boat taking tourists to Luxun’s old town.
Luxun’s old town was lovely! There were restaurants with local dishes, a small museum, live Chinese old songs, souvenir shops and Jiangnan Style water canals with cobblestone pathways! It was relaxing to wander around and get some snaps 📸
The entrance ticket is expensive, but worth it! It also includes the boat rides.
Entrance 🎫: 130¥
How to go ➡️Keyan Scenic Area, 柯岩风景区
I stayed at Mirror Lake hotel which is a 5 -10 min walk to the entrance. There’s a metro line connecting Shaoxing line 1 to Hangzhou line 5 which was a convenient option for me coming from Hangzhou. Taxi ride to the hotel/entrance is about 20 mins from Mingzhu Square 🚇 station, 明珠广场

Local Delicacies & Canals in Shaoxing 🏮
Cangqiao Straight Street is a popular tourist attraction in downtown Shaoxing, Yuecheng district. Whilst the street is packed with shops, restaurants, handicrafts, coffee shops, Shaoxing yellow wine sellers, it’s also a good place to discover local snacks and how they’re made. Surprisingly, I found long queues of people eager to taste local delicacies at every corner despite of the rain that day.
I wandered in the alleys leading to the back of the street, where water canals with old Chinese architecture buildings and Wupeng boats 🛶 offer such a picturesque scenery. If you want a boat ride, there’s a wharf, a few meters from the main entrance on Guangming Road. Just walk along the canal on your left, you’ll spot it easily ✌🏼
Address ➡️ Cangqiao Straight Street, 仓桥直街
How to go ➡️ I took a taxi 🚕. The driver will most probably drop you at the main entrance or nearby. It’s a long pedestrian street so you can just walk at your ease.

Great Barista coffee in Shaoxing ☕
Corner Coffee is a little artsy coffee shop along Cangqiao Straight Street. There are a few seats inside and a bunch of clothes, shoes, bags and hats on sale. The barista is accommodating and speaks English. After walking in the rain for a long time, I badly wanted a hot cup of coffee and some rest in a quiet environment away from the crowds flocking the street. I ordered a vanilla latte with oat milk which was perfect 👍🏼 Freshly made & not too sweet😌 They have other choices: Coconut latte, Hazelnut latte and the typical coffee choices. Prices are very decent. Mine was 33¥ ( 28¥ for a vanilla latte + 5¥ for oat milk)
Address ➡️Corner Coffee, 犄角咖啡
Cangqiao Straight Street, 仓桥直街329号
How to go ➡️ It’s a pedestrian street, so if you’re taking a 🚕, it’ll probably drop you somewhere nearby.

Anchang ancient town
Today I went to visit Anchang ancient town. It is a beautiful area to stroll around and enjoy a Shaoxing rice wine ice cream (5 rmb).
I do not recommend paying for the ticket to enter some of the buildings. Whilst it is only 50 rmb it seems a little expensive for what you get and I would prefer to just have strolled around the town.
I spent a few hours here and I would definitely recommend it as part of an itinerary to visit Shaoxing.
I went in the afternoon on a Sunday and it was very quiet. Maybe the heat had kept people away. There's lots of little restaurants but no one eating at them. I guess maybe some people would arrive in the evening instead. #shaoxing

Charmingly Primitive Old Town in Shaoxing 🎋
Anchang Ancient Town is located in Shaoxing county, near Hangzhou’s Xiaoshan district. The waterway is narrow and strips across the town with old Chinese style houses on both sides. The town looks charmingly primitive with its old stone bridges, walkways and local specialties such as the yellow wine, Anchang sausages and soy sauce roasted duck.
It’s also a living area where I saw elders watching TV, playing majiang or preparing the town’s specials. I also spotted a cobbler at work 👞 For the first time, I saw boats rowed by feet🛶🦶There are also a bunch of restaurants, shops, teahouses and a Starbucks 🤭 The town isn’t overwhelmingly commercial which makes it a nice place to visit if you want to stroll around a place with a more traditional vibe of the Chinese lifestyle.
Address ➡️ 安昌古镇
How to go ➡️ I joined a tour group which provided transport to the ancient town. I believe hiring a private driver or taking a taxi would be more convenient🙂

88 Stone Buddhas in the middle of nowhere!
#historicplaces Yangshan park is located in Shaoxing county. It’s a scenic spot with 88 Buddhas carved in stones and cliff. For millions of years, it has been exploited for the construction of the Qiantang River wall during the Ming & Tang dynasties.
While exploring the park, I was thinking that this can be the perfect place to shoot a movie 🎥 Little did I know that the movie “Journey to the West” was actually shot there. If you walk up to the highest view point, you’ll have a look of the surroundings. The park is picturesque, but looks run down. The location is also remote.

Just a few hours away from Shanghai , ShaoXing somehow has the magical power to transform the weather!🔥➡️❄️
