💬 Fukuoka Trip 2025 — Light-hearted travel but heavy on impressions 🇯🇵🫶 2 days in Kyushu without chasing landmarks, but with a lot of good feelings to take home with you 💼💛 🗓️ Day 1: Chikugo Regional Park This morning, we left Fukuoka for Chikugo – a small city that is almost nowhere in anyone’s plans, but let me tell you… it’s so good 🍃 Walking into Chikugo Regional Park, I knew that today would be the lightest day of the trip 🌳 The park is very large, with rivers, lawns, walking paths, cycling, or even picnic mats. We stopped to eat the bento box we bought from the train station before entering. While watching the river and clouds move slowly, it felt like time really slowed down. There are many beautiful photo spots, especially the wooden bridge with the river view with grass swaying in the wind – the best mood 🍂 In the afternoon, we continued walking to a small gallery and souvenir shop from local crafts. Supporting handmade products is so heartwarming ✨ 🗓️ Day 2: Yufuin — The dream hot spring town This is a town that everyone should visit at least once in their life… I tell you 🥹💦 We took the train from Fukuoka for about 2 hours. The view along the way was beautiful in a truly rural Japanese style, green all over 🌾 As soon as we arrived at Yufuin Station, the mood changed immediately — it's a small town surrounded by mountains, wooden buildings, cute cafes, and local sweet shops. It felt like we were in a Studio Ghibli movie set 🌸 🍮 Walked to eat hot grilled mochi 🛍️ Stopped by to see handmade woodwork 📸 And ended by walking to Kinrin Lake, where the water reflected the sky beautifully until it was quiet for a moment 🌅 Before going back, we stopped to soak our feet in a roadside hot spring (free!). It was a little bit satisfying, but it was really great ♨️ 📌 Summary of the 2-day Fukuoka trip 2 days, 2 vibes — The first day was local nature like "When you're free, the world is light." 🍃 Day 2 of a fantasy world in a lovely Japanese village ♨️ No need to rush to travel, no need to go through it until you're tired. We made a special trip to Ichiba Shokudo Maguro to Kame, located inside Karato Fish Market, just to try the region’s famed fugu (blowfish) — a must-try delicacy in Yamaguchi. When we arrived, there was already a line forming outside, a good sign of its popularity. We wrote our names on the waitlist and were seated within 15 minutes. The queue moved fast and the staff were very organized. We ordered a blowfish sashimi set and deep-fried fugu, both prepared fresh. The sashimi was delicately sliced, with that signature translucent look, and had a clean, subtle sweetness. The fried version was surprisingly tender with a crispy outer layer — really tasty and easy to enjoy even if it’s your first time trying fugu. Despite the language barrier, the service was warm and accommodating. The staff patiently guided us through the ordering process and made us feel very welcome. One of the highlights? The view! The restaurant has large windows that look out toward the water — a great bonus to accompany a delicious and unique meal. We had a lovely breakfast at Hoshino Coffee Fukuoka Futamatase Shop, and it turned out to be just the kind of slow, relaxing start we needed for the day. The interior of the café was warm and cozy, filled with a nostalgic charm that made it feel like a comforting retreat from the bustle outside. We went for our usual favorites — toast with a boiled egg, the French toast set, and ham and cheese toast — all simple but so well executed. Everything was served with great attention to detail, as always. And of course, we had their signature hand-drip coffee, which hit the spot perfectly — rich, smooth, and aromatic. Hoshino Coffee has always been one of our go-to spots whenever we’re in Japan, and once again, it didn’t disappoint. When in Fukuoka, trying motsunabe (offal hotpot) is practically a must — and we had the chance to enjoy it at Yamaya, located in Hakata Ward. Originally, we planned to dine at a well-known motsunabe spot just across the street, but the long wait led us to discover Yamaya instead. And honestly, we were glad it happened. Even though there was a short wait here too, we were quickly seated in a beautifully designed restaurant that oozed traditional Japanese charm — wooden interiors, warm lighting, and a calm, inviting vibe. The servers were very friendly and took time to walk us through the menu, making the experience even better. We ordered the signature motsunabe, and it was my first time trying offals in a hotpot. To my surprise, the broth was incredibly flavorful — light yet rich — and the offals were fresh and tender. What stood out was the generous amount of fresh vegetables like cabbage and chives, which gave the hotpot a refreshing and balanced taste. On top of that, I ventured to try the horse meat sashimi — a rare delicacy — and it was shockingly clean and mild, with none of the gaminess I had feared. Tucked away in the hills near Fukuoka, Nanzoin Temple is a must-visit for anyone looking for a peaceful escape with a touch of awe. This Buddhist temple is famous for housing one of the largest bronze reclining Buddha statues in the world—and it truly lives up to the hype. The temple compound is quite large, and admittedly, we got a little lost trying to find the main statue at first. Thankfully, some friendly locals pointed us in the right direction. It’s a bit of a walk from the entrance to the main statue area, but the path is scenic and calming, lined with smaller shrines, stone steps, and forested surroundings. And then—wow. Standing before the reclining Buddha in person is breathtaking. It’s hard to grasp the scale until you’re actually there. The statue, representing the Buddha entering Nirvana, is beautifully detailed and blends seamlessly with the natural greenery around it. It’s not just a photo opportunity—it feels deeply tranquil and humbling. Near the top, there are benches and a small café, where I had a much-needed cup of coffee while the kids enjoyed some soft serve ice cream. During our stay in Fukuoka, we made it a point to visit the iconic Starbucks Coffee at Ohori Park—and it didn’t disappoint. Nestled right inside the scenic park grounds, this café perfectly blends into its natural surroundings, offering a peaceful and picturesque breakfast experience. Although the car park is a bit of a walk away (about 15 to 20 minutes), the stroll through Ohori Park made up for it. With tranquil paths, greenery, and lakeside views, the walk itself felt like a gentle morning reset. Every time we visit Japan, a trip to a conveyor belt sushi restaurant is a must — and Sushiro at Hakozaki didn’t disappoint. Located at 4 Chome-15-41 Hakozaki, this spot is exactly what you’d expect from a good local sushi chain: simple, no-frills, and great value. Once we arrived, the check-in process was easy — just take a queue number from the kiosk and wait to be called. The staff was efficient and quickly brought us to our seats once it was our turn. The atmosphere is casual and family-friendly, perfect for a quick and satisfying meal. As for the food — fresh, tasty, and great variety. We chose The358 UMI for our recent stay in Fukuoka because it’s a relatively new hotel tucked away from the busy city center — perfect for a peaceful and laid-back getaway. The location in the suburbs gave us the quiet atmosphere we were looking for, and the ample parking space right at the entrance was a huge plus, especially since we were driving. The hotel is situated beside a few shopping malls, which we didn’t get the chance to explore, but it’s certainly a convenience for future visits. One of the highlights of our stay was the public bath facility, which was clean and very much appreciated after a long day of travel. We stayed in a family room, which was impressively spacious. The beds were plush and comfortable, and the room itself was spotless — clearly well-maintained. That said, one area for improvement would be the smoking area, which is located on the rooftop and is not sheltered. If you’re a smoker, just be prepared for the elements — I had to brave some pretty strong winds coming off the sea just to have a puff. It was freezing! Also, for travelers not planning to drive, the location might be a little inconvenient in terms of public transport. But if you have a car, it’s a wonderful escape from the city with modern amenities and a serene atmosphere. All in all, a very satisfying stay. A newly opened mall in the heart of Tenjin, Fukuoka 🇯🇵 Just a 1-minute walk from Tenjin Station, and you're there! 🤩 This mall is a one-stop destination featuring a variety of restaurants, cafes, branded clothing shops, Japanese cosmetic counters, drugstores, and even souvenir shops. It's a perfect place to stroll around and enjoy everything in one spot—definitely one of Fukuoka's must-visit malls! After taking a quick tour yesterday, what impressed me the most were the restaurants and cafes. There are so many options! Plus, some cafes are opening their first-ever branches in Fukuoka, such as: - Cafe Kitsune (2F) - Kanno Coffee (4F) - Saryo ITOEN (B2) In summary, there are plenty of new shops and cafes to explore! The location is excellent, right in the city center, across from Parco Tenjin Mall and not far from Mina Tenjin Mall. You can easily visit all three places in one trip! "🚞Yufuin Forest in Yufu City, Kyushu🚞" "Yufuin Forest" is one of Kyushu's characteristic trains🚞 Usually you will take the bus to the last stop, Yufuin Station. The train is very exquisite and has a sense of age. Food is available for purchase on the train so you don't have to worry about going hungry. There are also commemorative stamps and check-in scenes🤳 What I like most is the scenery, people and animals along the way. People waved to us when we passed the middle station 😆 It really feels like being in the world of animation. Very interesting🤣 Although the journey takes about 2-3 hours, it doesn't feel boring at all I also shared some of the attractions and food in Yufu City. The shrine itself is a peaceful retreat, with striking vermillion gates and ancient trees lining the pathways. The atmosphere is both serene and inspiring, especially if you're seeking a moment of reflection. Don’t miss the picturesque plum trees (especially if you’re visiting in the spring), as they add a special touch to the experience. I also enjoyed browsing the nearby shops, which offer local sweets and souvenirs that give a true sense of the region’s heritage. Fukuoka Castle Ruins and Maizuru Park Next, I explored the Fukuoka Castle Ruins within Maizuru Park. While much of the original structure is gone, the ruins are a fascinating glimpse into Fukuoka’s feudal past. Walking along the ancient stone walls, I could imagine the castle's former grandeur. The panoramic views from the castle's highest points were simply breathtaking, offering a perfect balance of history and nature. I took a peaceful walk around the lake, enjoying the Japanese gardens and the serenity of the surroundings. The park also has a lovely Japanese garden that’s perfect for unwinding, with carefully manicured landscapes and tranquil ponds. It’s a great spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a few hours. Fukuoka Tower: Stunning Night Views No trip to Fukuoka is complete without visiting Fukuoka Tower, especially at night. The tower, illuminated in festive Christmas lights, offers one of the most spectacular views of the city. I went up to the observation deck to catch a panoramic view of Fukuoka’s skyline and coastline, which was even more magical thanks to the holiday illuminations. The shimmering lights reflecting off the water and the city below made for a truly enchanting experience. It’s a great place to capture memories and enjoy the stunning contrast of modern Fukuoka against the backdrop of sparkling lights. Christmas Illumination Bonus As I visited these places at night, the festive lights added a joyful atmosphere to the already beautiful scenes. A large park in the heart of Fukuoka city The atmosphere in early April is very beautiful with cherry blossoms in full bloom. The park is beautifully landscaped and shady, with quite a few locals exercising. There is also an Art Museum to visit within the park. Note: There is a cherry blossom viewing festival in the park (since we came in the morning, it was still quiet)
