I stumbled upon 爱情麻辣烫 while looking for dinner around Medini and I’m so glad I walked in. This unassuming spot turned out to be a gem for Mala soup lovers. Everything—from the ingredient selection to the soup base—was on point. The variety of ingredients was impressive. I had fun picking out everything from meat and seafood to crisp veggies, and everything looked and tasted super fresh. I went with the classic Mala broth, and it was chef’s kiss—spicy, bold, aromatic, and deeply satisfying without being overwhelming. One highlight was the self-service condiments counter—fresh herbs, sauces, and chili that let you build your own dipping sauce. That added a personal touch I really enjoyed. The ambience? As big fans of Haidilao, we make it a point to try their branches wherever we travel — and this visit to their Vietnam outlet at Lotte Mall Tây Hồ was another one to tick off the list. This was our first time trying Haidilao in Vietnam, and we were pleasantly surprised by some regional differences. For example, certain broths like the crab soup aren’t available in Singapore, so we gave that a try alongside the classic mala hotpot. The crab broth had a sweet, light seafood note that was quite unique — something different but enjoyable. However, we did notice some key ingredient differences. Items commonly found in the Singapore menu like pork belly, liver, or kidneys weren’t available here, which slightly limited our usual order. The biggest challenge was the language barrier. Our server couldn’t speak English, and we don’t speak Vietnamese, so communication was minimal. This understandably impacted the usual high-touch service HDL is known for, though we still experienced the familiar noodle dance performance and cheerful birthday singing, which brought that signature HDL energy to the meal. This shop is called 孔堂老火锅鱼, and it is very close to the Chengdu check-in land, which is Chunxi Lu. It is not far from this metro station.
