Sausage is a specialty food in Taiyuan. This restaurant is of course a time-honored brand in Taiyuan and is located in a busy area, so there are many diners. Tourists visiting the night market like to taste it here, but the taste is not as good as expected.
Taiyuan Tourism Red and Black List | Don't Waste Money! Avoid Pitfalls in 3 Minutes ✅ 🔥Must-Visit Red List: - Jinci Temple: See the ancient architecture and Zhou Cypress trees; the afternoon light makes for stunning photos. - Shanxi Museum: Free but requires reservations; the Bird Zun is a must-see; 2 hours is enough. - Food Street: Yang Ji Guanchang (a type of sausage), Xueshan Cold Drink Hall; popular with locals. ❌Avoid Black List: - Don't buy "special products" at the scenic area entrance; supermarkets offer better deals on Fenjiu (a type of Chinese liquor) and aged vinegar. - Avoid taking the "scenic area shuttle bus" unless absolutely necessary; bus line 4 is cheaper. - Avoid the popular snacks on Zhonglou Street; they're expensive and generally not very tasty. #TaiyuanTravelGuide #TaiyuanRedandBlackList #ShanxiTravelPitfallsAvoid
Dinner Spot: Xinghuatang (South Central Ring Road Branch) We arrived at Xinghuatang promptly at 7 PM. It was incredibly popular, so remember to get a number on your phone beforehand! The restaurant's retro-elegant style, combined with Shanxi intangible cultural heritage displays, created a fantastic atmosphere. Every dish we ordered was amazing: * Braised Pork: The soul of Shanxi cuisine! Tender slices of pork with a perfect hint of vinegar—a perfect accompaniment to rice! * Sweet and Sour Meatballs: My favorite! Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with the sweet and sour sauce evenly distributed—perfect for satisfying every bite. * Hundred Flower Shaomai: A visual delight, with a thin skin and generous filling, resembling blooming flowers. The taste was also superb. Nighttime Stroll: Food Street → Bell Tower Street We took a taxi straight to the Food Street from the restaurant. The night's vibrant atmosphere was just beginning! These two streets are connected; our suggested route is: Eat snacks at the Food Street → Stroll and take photos at the Bell Tower Street. 🍜 Must-Try Foods on the Food Street (Note Closing Times!) * Hao Ganggang Lamb Offal Soup: Delicious lamb soup, served with crispy fried bread – a heartwarming and comforting meal. (Generally open until 9:30 PM - 10:00 PM) * Xueshan Cold Drink Hall - Sea Buckthorn Ice Cream: A unique sweet and sour Shanxi flavor, very refreshing. (Generally open until around 10:00 PM) * Yang Ji Guanchang (Buckwheat Sausage): A specialty snack made with buckwheat noodles, topped with a spicy and sour braising sauce. (Generally open until around 9:30 PM) 📸 Must-Visit Zhonglou Street (Shops close early, street lights stay on longer) * The retro lighting along the entire street is stunning, perfect for taking photos! However, creative shops and time-honored brands like Jinli and Qianhexiang Tea House usually close around 9:00 PM - 9:30 PM, so arrive early if you want to shop. * The streetscape and lights remain on until late, allowing you to enjoy them at your leisure. 😅 A little mishap while buying fried dough twists: The popular fried dough twist shop on the food street was already sold out and closed by 9 PM! We decisively hired a delivery guy at 1 PM the next day to finally get some – you know how persistent foodies are! Night View Extension: Wenying Park → Shanxi Hotel → Shouyi Gate That evening, we continued our stroll, walking through Wenying Park in the quiet and pleasant night. Then we saw the incredibly grand Shanxi Hotel, like a palace under the lights. It's a long-established state guesthouse, perfect for taking photos! Afterwards, we walked to Wuyi Square. Shouyi Gate looked especially majestic under the lights at night. It's a reconstructed ancient city gate, carrying the memory of the Xinhai Revolution in Taiyuan. Wuyi Square, as the city's central living room, is also a popular spot for locals to stroll and relax in the evening. Useful Tips * Best time for nighttime sightseeing: From dusk until 9:30 PM (for shopping and eating), after 9:30 PM is best for viewing the night view and taking photos. Wear comfortable shoes; these places are the most pleasant to walk and explore. #ShanxiTourism #TaiyuanTravelGuide
Local guide to avoid pitfalls 🚶♀️ I spent 3 days in Taiyuan and completely fell in love with this laid-back ancient city! No rushing to see the sights, just endless carbs to eat and countless old streets to explore. You can have a super comfortable experience for just over 500 RMB per person. Here's a guide, you're welcome! 💨 💰 Budget Reference (3 days 2 nights) • Transportation: Taxis are super cheap locally! Most rides within the city center cost 10-15 RMB. 3 days of taxis + bus to Jinci Temple totaled about 80 RMB. • Accommodation: Choose hotels near Yingze Street or Liuxiang. Good value hotels are 150-200 RMB per night, about 350 RMB for 2 nights. • Food and Drink: Breakfast 5-10 RMB, lunch and dinner 30-50 RMB per person. 3 days of trying local specialties cost about 200 RMB. • Entrance Fees: Most attractions are free! Jinci Temple (80 RMB) + Mengshan Giant Buddha (35 RMB), students can get a 50% discount, total tickets approximately 100 RMB. • Total Budget: 500-600 RMB, even lower for students! 📍 Must-See Attractions (Avoid crowds, choose the right time for a comfortable experience) 1. Jinci Museum ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Go early! Enter as soon as it opens at 8:30 AM to avoid tour groups. The sunlight on the ancient buildings is incredibly photogenic. The Song Dynasty maid statues in the Holy Mother Hall and the flowing water of Nanlao Spring can be explored at a leisurely pace, taking about 2 hours. Remember to catch the free guided tours (10:00 AM and 2:00 PM). 2. Taiyuan City Museum ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Free, but advance reservations are required! Shaped like a giant cauldron, it has a very stylish design. The Jin State artifacts exhibition on the basement floor is a must-see; the bronzes are truly impressive. There's a rest area on the first floor where you can relax and enjoy the view. 3. Mengshan Giant Buddha ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 162 years older than the Leshan Giant Buddha! Take bus 839 directly; the hike is easy, only half an hour to reach the Buddha's feet. Standing beneath the Buddha is incredibly soothing. Go around 4 pm to capture the sunset reflected on the statue. 4. Bell Tower Street/Food Street ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Even better atmosphere at night! Old buildings adorned with red lanterns; buy an "egg waffle ice cream" from Zhonglou Street and enjoy it while strolling – it's incredibly lively and full of local flavor. No need to buy special souvenirs, just wander around and soak in the old town's atmosphere. 🚶 3-Day Slow Travel Itinerary (Relaxed and Relaxing) Day 1: The Lively Atmosphere of the Old Town • Morning: Arrive in Taiyuan, stay near Yingze Street, drop off your luggage and go eat "Tou Nao" (a local breakfast, absolutely delicious with shumai). • Afternoon: Visit the Taiyuan City Museum to learn about the history of the Jin State. Afterwards, take a walk in Fenhe Park and enjoy the river breeze. • Evening: Explore Zhonglou Street and the food street, try "God's Fried Chicken" – locals always have long queues. Day 2: A Journey Through Ancient Architecture • Morning: Jinci Museum (go early to avoid crowds). After visiting, sit in Jinci Park for a while and feel the tranquility of the ancient temple. • Afternoon: Return to the city center and eat at the Shanxi Museum (free, reservations required!), see the Jin Hou Bird Zun (the museum's treasure). • Evening: Head to "Old Military Camp Food Street" for a bowl of stir-fried sausage and a bowl of steamed buns – a carb-filled treat! Day 3: A Blend of Nature and Old Town • Morning: Visit the Mengshan Giant Buddha. Climb the mountain, pay your respects, and experience the collision of nature and history. • Afternoon: Explore "Chongshan Temple" (free, off-the-beaten-path!). The temple's scripture pavilion has a vintage feel, and it's quiet and less crowded. • Evening: Buy some "Taigu cakes" as souvenirs to end your trip. 🍜 Food Recommendations (Local favorites, guaranteed to please) • Must-try breakfast: Tou Nao (a type of soup) + Shaomai (recommended: "Qingheyuan," a long-established brand), Tofu pudding with fried dough sticks (any neighborhood shop will do). • Recommended main meals: ◦ Shanxi cuisine: "Lao Taiyuan Restaurant." Must-orders include braised pork belly and sweet and sour meatballs. Average price: 50 RMB per person. ◦ Noodles: "Chunyang Palace Noodle Restaurant." The tijian (a type of noodle) and knife-cut noodles are incredibly chewy. Add a braised egg for only 15 RMB. ◦ Snacks: Stir-fried sausage (from "Yang Ji Guan Chang" in the old military camp), bowl-shaped steamed buns, lamb offal stew (super warming in winter) • Desserts: "Liuweizhai" yogurt, thick and creamy, 5 yuan a cup, refreshing and delicious Taiyuan is truly perfect for a slow-paced trip! It lacks the fast pace of first-tier cities, only a vibrant atmosphere of daily life. I want to come back again and try all the noodles! 😋 #MyLEGOland #WatchTheMostBeautifulSunsetHere #AutumnTravel #RomanticDomesticDestinations
