Nanxiang Old Street Review

As one of the "Shanghai four historical and cultural famous towns", Nanxiang ancient town, not only has the famous Nanxiang Xiaolongbao, but also hides the only "Jiangnan garden" in Shanghai. Ancient Yiyuan is the most well-known garden in Nanxiang Ancient Town, listed among the "Shanghai five classical gardens".

Nanxiang Old Street (Old Nanxiang Street) (the historical and cultural heritage reserve of the twin towers announced by the city government) is located in the central area of Nanxiang Ancient Town, with a planned area of 14.34 million square meters. There are Renmin Street, Gonghe Street, Jiefang Street and Shengli Street, which are traditional commercial and residential areas. After renovation, the historical style of "Yin Nanxiang" in the late Qing Dynasty and early Minzhu was restored: powdered walls and tiles, houses were uneven, and shops were scaled up; small bridges, flowing water, gardens, promenades, and painting shops were all charming.

The essence of Nanxiang Ancient Town lies in Nanxiang Old Street, which is close to Guyi Garden, one of the five major classical gardens in Shanghai. Specifically, it is the area near Renmin Street, Gonghe Street, Jiefang Street and Shengli Street, covering an area of ​​about 143,400 square meters. It contains Yunxiang Temple and ancient wells from the Liang Dynasty in the Southern and Northern Dynasties, twin towers from the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, Tan Garden and bridges from the Ming Dynasty, the imperial stele of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty and the tomb of Mr. Xu Sumin in the Republic of China, and other cultural relics and historical sites. It is a microcosm of the history, commerce and culture of the ancient town of Nanxiang. Nanxiang Old Street is a traditional commercial district and residential area. It has been well renovated and protected, and has basically restored the historical style of "Yin Nanxiang" in the late Qing Dynasty: small bridges and flowing water, white walls and black tiles, and many shops, which are bustling and prosperous. Take a walk and take a look, and remember to taste the famous Nanxiang Xiaolong!

The nearest scenic spot to home is about 20 minutes'walk. It is very similar to Shantang Street in Suzhou and most of the ancient towns in Shuixiang. It has small bridges, flowing water, pavilions and pavilions. There are also two pagodas built in the Southern Dynasty. There are not only places to play, but also many delicacies in the old street. There are both Chinese and Western styles. Many net red delicacies can be bought here, and they are not expensive. Most stores can pay for Alipay or WeChat. It's really comfortable to go shopping in the old street and eat snacks while walking.

I have been to Guyi Garden many times, but I have never visited the adjacent Nanxiang Old Street. This time I finally had the opportunity to walk into it and feel the charm of the thousand-year-old town. The ancient street is unexpectedly clean, and the merchants also feel very formal. There are Yunxiang Temple and ancient wells from the Liang Dynasty, twin towers from the Five Dynasties, and Tan Garden and bridges from the Ming Dynasty in the scenic area. Among them, the twin towers are the symbol of Nanxiang. I especially recommend Tan Garden, a garden built in the Ming Dynasty, which fully reflects the architectural art of Jiangnan gardens. My Jia Bookstore at its entrance is also a very popular online bookstore. Of course, you have to buy a separate ticket for this attraction, which is very worthwhile. It is small and exquisite, but there are views everywhere.
