🌟Highlights: Located in the beautiful Alazani Valley, Kakheti is rich in Georgia's best wines. The beauty and wine of Kakheti are intoxicating. "Red wine town" Sighnaghi is the star attraction in this area, and Telavi is the base camp for visiting wineries...
👍Most recommended: Sighnaghi: Red wine town
Sighnaghi, where every household makes wine, although there are not so many well-known wineries, Sighnaghi also has enough capital to attract travelers. The town is high above the open river valley, with the Caucasus Mountains as the background. The cobblestone alleys rise and fall along the mountains, reminiscent of the Tuscan style.
🚉Transportation strategy: Take a minibus to Sighnaghi near the Samgori subway station in Tbilisi. There is a bus every 2 hours, the journey takes nearly 2 hours, and the fare is 10 lari.
City Walls
The city wall winding above the town was completed in the 18th century during the reign of Iraklius II. It is 4 kilometers long and inlaid with 23 towers. There is a Saint George Church inside the city wall, and the church bell tower dominates the town's skyline.
Dusk is the best time to stroll along the city wall. There are scattered red-tiled houses nearby, flat fields and lush woods in front, and the Caucasus Mountains in the distance. It looks like an oil painting under the sunset tones.
✅Must experience: Monastery of St. Nino
There is a monastery in the village of Bodbe, 2 kilometers away from Sighnaghi, which is the resting place of St. Nino. The monastery consists of two buildings. The large and magnificent one is the Cathedral of St. George. St. Nino's tomb is in a brick chapel. The mausoleum is silver-plated and inlaid with turquoise. Photography is not allowed. There is a step down next to the observation deck in the monastery, leading to the holy spring. Legend has it that the spring water gushed out after St. Nino prayed.
Pheasnat’s Tears Restaurant
This restaurant, called “Pheasnat’s Tears”, has its own vineyard and winery. The owner is dedicated to qvevri winemaking and has played an important role in promoting Georgian wine internationally. You can drink top-quality clay wine here, or contact their winery for a tour.
Telavi: Winery Base Camp
Telavi is the capital of Kakheti. The town’s Batonistsikhe Castle was once the residence of the Kakheti king. If you are a veteran “drinker”, you must visit the surrounding wineries. The Kakheti Wine Guild near the castle can organize winery tours, or you can charter a car to explore on your own.
Alaverdi Cathedral
Built by the Kakheti king in the 11th century, this church was the tallest church in Georgia until the Holy Trinity Church in Tbilisi was built. The church is perfectly proportioned and simply decorated. Sunlight shines into the main hall through the narrow windows, creating a natural solemnity. The church also has an underground wine cellar, and supervising winemaking is also one of the clergy's duties here.
Winery Khareba
The highlight of this winery is a wine cellar transformed from a tunnel, which maintains a constant temperature of 14-15° for fermenting and storing wine. You can enter some tunnels for a visit and taste wine here.

Davit Gareja: Border Town
Davet Gareja is close to the border with Azerbaijan. It is inconvenient to travel and is surrounded by desolate scenery. There are few tourists, but monument lovers should not miss the Udabno Monastery here. The monastery was carved out of caves and retains medieval murals. It is a cultural treasure of Georgia. You can rent a car from Sighnaghi or Telavi, or sign up for a day tour in Tbilisi.
