The Center Review

The Central to Mid-Levels escalator system was built by the Hong Kong government. It was originally intended to facilitate residents in the Mid-Levels area to travel to the Central business district and to ease the busy conditions on the narrow roads in the Mid-Levels area. The system cost HK$240 million to build and was put into use on October 15, 1993. The annual electricity bill is estimated to be as high as HK$500,000. The original design of the plan was to build six similar escalator systems. Later, serious overfunding problems were discovered midway through the construction, and only one escalator system was built and the plan was not continued.
