As a Travel & Safari Specialist for Africa, I had the pleasure of visiting Camp George, which is part of the Simbavati Collection, on a site inspection for potential clients. While I only stayed for one night, it was more than enough to experience the magic this place holds. Here are the highlights: 🌍 Location Simbavati Camp George is nestled in a quiet, secluded corner of the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, which shares unfenced borders with the iconic Kruger National Park. Located in the more remote western section of the reserve, it truly gives you the sense of being deep in the wilderness. I love this back section, as it's known for being wilder compared to other parts of the reserve. The landscape here is diverse, ranging from rocky areas to expansive stretches of land that overlook the Klaserie River, providing ever-changing and stunning visual contrasts. The property itself is surrounded by lush gardens, filled with indigenous plant species that are carefully maintained. The manicured lawns and vibrant flora ensure that the camp remains green and blooming year-round, even during the dry season. However, travelers who prefer grounds that blend seamlessly with the natural bush might not find this as appealing. But for those who enjoy a peaceful oasis, both aesthetically and energetically, this is the perfect spot. A cool feature of the grounds is that they host one of the largest collections of cycads – an ancient, cone-bearing plant species that is now endangered. With over 200 cycads and all 38 species found in South Africa, it’s a unique aspect of the property. Additionally, the camp features a stunning waterhole that remains filled year-round, attracting a variety of game. This means that you can often experience incredible wildlife encounters without ever leaving the property. 🛖 Lodge Setting & Décor Camp George will appeal to those who appreciate beautiful interiors. It's a perfect blend of modern safari with a traditional twist, merging classic safari elements with contemporary design. The camp incorporates thatched rondavels, indigenous wood furniture, and curated collections of local art. Pops of color are thoughtfully scattered throughout the camp, drawing inspiration from the vibrant colors of the surrounding gardens, creating a seamless flow between the indoors and outdoors. The entryway is grand, making you feel immediately welcomed. Upon entering, you’ll find yourself in the beautiful gardens, with rooms thoughtfully spaced to offer differing viewpoints of the surrounding bush, rocky features, and dry riverbed. The pool sits centrally in the grounds, surrounded by a variety of seating options, including pool loungers, couches, and those charming egg-shaped chairs. To the right of the pool is the waterhole, located just outside the electrified fence, as the entire camp is enclosed for safety. Continuing through the grounds, you'll arrive at the indoor sitting room and bar, followed by both indoor and outdoor dining areas.
