North Gate Hotel

We had a wonderful 2 night stay at North Gate Hotel in Jaffna. The location is perfect—just a short walk from the Jaffna Railway Station, which made our travel very convenient. From the moment we arrived, we received a warm and friendly welcome. The front desk staff were exceptional and could communicate fluently in Tamil, Sinhala, and English, which made everything smooth and easy. Our room was well-equipped, clean, and comfortable, offering a very pleasant stay. The buffet was excellent with a great variety of delicious options, and the à la carte menu was equally satisfying. Food bit expensive compared to nearby hotels. The staff also went out of their way to guide us on planning our Jaffna tour, which we truly appreciated. Even after we checked out in the morning, they kindly offered to keep our room available till late, without extra cost and we were allowed to relax in the lobby for a few more hours until our train departure. This level of hospitality truly stood out. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Jaffna!

Super hôtel avec un petit déjeuné sri lankais très varié et très bon. La piscine est très agréable et les petits balcons sur les chambres également. L’hôtel est juste à côté de la gare c’est très pratique ! Pas loin de bons restaurants également

Northgate Hotel & Restaurant Review Stayed: May 19–21 I stayed at the Northgate Hotel for two nights and was pleased with the overall experience. The hotel is decent and well-maintained, and the staff were excellent—friendly, helpful, and attentive throughout my stay. Upon check-in, the hotel staff recommended the restaurant located on the first floor. I tried the seafood kothu roti on May 19 and was genuinely impressed. Though the dish was dark in colour, it was packed with flavour and had a great mix of seafood—I could taste shrimp, cuttlefish, and fish. It was very well prepared. The dish was reasonably priced at 1700. I also ordered a local arrack cocktail (arrack, passionfruit cordial, lime, etc.), which was refreshing and balanced. Priced at 770, it offered good value for both taste and presentation. Later that evening, I visited Machnag Bar, which is attached to the hotel. I had a 500ml Lion Beer (cost 635) and found the space comfortable and welcoming. The bar also serves food, though I had already eaten at the hotel restaurant. Breakfast was included with the room, and the buffet exceeded expectations. It featured a wide selection of traditional items such as puttu, string hoppers, fish kulambu, sambar, dhal, and various sambols. Fresh milk appam (hoppers) were available on order, and they were just as I remembered from childhood—fresh, soft, and full of flavour. Overall, I highly recommend the Northgate Hotel, its first-floor restaurant, and the Machnag Bar. The combination of good food, fair prices, and warm service makes this a great place to stay, dine, and relax with friends or family.

Excellent Service and Comfortable Stay Our recent stay at NorthGate Hotel, Jaffna, was truly delightful. The hotel offers an excellent level of service and a very comfortable stay. NorthGate’s authentic traditional Jaffna cuisine is outstanding—especially the breakfast spread, which was varied, flavorful, and truly satisfying. The rooms are spacious, clean, cozy, and well-maintained, ensuring a restful experience. The beautiful swimming pool was another highlight—very clean and inviting. From the front desk to the kitchen staff, everyone was extremely helpful and attentive. A special thanks to the team for going out of their way to organize a surprise birthday celebration for our friend—complete with delicious cakes that deserve a special mention! The hotel’s location is also very convenient—close to the main city, restaurants, and within walking distance of the Jaffna railway station, which is one of the cleanest and best-maintained stations in Sri Lanka. It was a very pleasant two days in Jaffna, made even better by the warm hospitality at NorthGate Hotel. Thank you very much for everything!
