"Although located at the Nikko town centre, the area is a bit quiet with not many shops around. It is closed to the Kanman-ga-fuchi Abyss. Hotel room is big, and the river view is excellent. The onsen is good. Besides traditional inside & outside onsen, there is also jaccuzi style pool. The dinner and breakfast are also taste good."

"The room was spacious and well-equipped, so overall it was a good stay. Facilities: Even though I only stayed one night, I was able to use the washing machine and detergent was provided, which was helpful. Location: It is far from the station, so it may be inconvenient for those using the train. Parking: Although there were advance instructions on how to use the parking lot, there were some parts that were difficult to understand, and I had a bit of trouble when I arrived at the hotel. Check-in: I was a little worried after reading the reviews, but I followed the advance instructions and had no problems. Other: I was bothered by the noise, probably from the children running around in the room next door. There were noise guidelines posted in the room, so as long as you follow the rules, I don't think there will be any problems."

"Arriving at the train station, I found out the shuttle bus for the hotel wouldn't arrive for another 45 minutes, so we opted to walk there. It takes about half an hour but going uphill in the blazing sun was a bit torturous. The driveway is also very steep, so beware if you have a lot of baggage. Hotel has a wealth of history. It hosted a lot of famous guests in the early 20th century. Modern hotels are sterile in comparison. It's an old building, so is draughty and full of ancient furniture. This may be a turnoff for some but I found it completely charming."

"This is an absolutely fantastic hotel, definitely a 5/5! The staff were incredibly helpful and provided excellent service. The location is perfect, and the facilities are comprehensive. The food was delicious, especially the dinner buffet which even featured crab legs. The ambiance was wonderful. You could easily spend your entire trip just enjoying the hotel, and it would be thoroughly worthwhile. It offers incredible value for money; the quality far exceeds the reasonable price. We've stayed here many times, and each visit has been consistently impressive. We've never been disappointed and will definitely be back again. We genuinely love this hotel!"

"I had an exceptional stay at Nikko Stay House Arai, and I would rate it a perfect 10/10. From the moment I arrived, I felt right at home. The accommodations were incredibly comfortable and had a warm, homely atmosphere that made my stay so enjoyable. The attention to detail in the design and decor truly made it feel like a home away from home. The staff were friendly and attentive, always ready to assist with a smile. The cleanliness and upkeep of the facilities were top-notch. Overall, my experience was nothing short of fantastic. If you're looking for a place that feels like home, Nikko Stay House Arai is the perfect choice. Highly recommended!"

"The location is superb, conveniently situated between Tobu Nikko and JR Nikko stations. While the room was a little on the smaller side, it was immaculately clean. The hotel's on-site hot spring (onsen) was also a pleasant bonus. The only minor drawback was that the changing area for the onsen felt a bit rudimentary. The absolute highlight was the complimentary breakfast; it was very generous and delicious. Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel."

Amazing
GGuest UserThe room was spacious, the bed was comfortable, and the view was great. The free cocktail and coffee services in the lobby were nice, as well as the free drink bar (including one beer per person) near the entrance to the hot spring. The paid massage service was also good. The meals were decent, especially the grilled beef, which simply melted in my mouth. The restaurant staff welcomed us warmly and provided friendly service. Cons: The variety of hot springs was lacking, and the view from the hot springs was almost blocked, which was disappointing. The lockers for valuables used combination dials, and foreign guests often didn’t know how to use them, locking their room keys inside and struggling to reopen them. This was a major inconvenience. They should switch to a key-and-wristband system like other onsen hotels. The room itself felt like an old, once-grand mansion that had seen better days. The furniture had many scratches, and the surfaces were worn and peeling. It made me think it must have been impressive in the past. Still, the room was definitely more spacious compared to other hotels.

AAnonymous UserThe hotel is about 20 minutes away from Kinugawa Onsen Station. We arrived in the morning and there was no shuttle bus to the hotel. We waited for a while at the taxi station but there was no car, so we walked to the hotel. It is recommended to tell the hotel the arrival time and ask the hotel to book a taxi. When leaving, we booked a shuttle bus in advance. The shuttle bus fee is 300 yen per person. The hot spring in the hotel is comfortable, and the dinner is a buffet, which is very rich.

Jjlow123Most of the reviews are outdated so I thought I'd give an updated review. For one thing, there is WiFi (I have informed the landlady that the website indicates otherwise). This place is a traditional-style inn. You'll be sleeping in a futon (some Google-fu should help you know how to use one), use two pairs of slippers (one for moving around the house, one exclusively for the toilet) and will also bathe in a Japanese-style shared bathroom. The front gate and bathroom close at 10pm, which is not an issue as everywhere in Nikko closes early and it's too dark to hike outdoors (in early Autumn). We loved using the onsen to relax after a day of strolling around and hiking, and the delicious Japanese-style breakfast was lovingly prepared by a friendly old granny. The premises are old but well-maintained. Toilets, bathroom and onsen were great but we were there during off-peak season so we didn't need to share so much. Should we return to Nikko, this place will be our first choice!

CcckentThe hotel is great! The room was clean, comfortable, and well-equipped with many facilities like karaoke, a game center, and more. I visited with my family, a total of 14 people, and they were able to arrange a private room for us for both dinner and breakfast. Both meals were buffet-style and absolutely delicious. The onsen experience was wonderful, and the view from the onsen was fantastic, with a beautiful view of the Kinugawa River. However, there was one issue: when we checked in, the reception took our passports for photocopying. Unfortunately, they missed returning one of the passports to us. It wasn’t until after we checked out and reached our next stop that we realized one passport was missing. We had to go back to the hotel to take it. Despite this, the overall experience was great, and I would still recommend the hotel.

GGuest UserMany things were great about this hotel - I stayed in the dorm for 10 nights and you're basically getting hotel level service and amenities for dorm price, very value for money. New towels provided everyday, library and lounge were great (free alcohol and snacks, plus lovely hammocks and view of the lake), onsen was a good size with indoor and outdoor pools. The one thing I didn't like was the material they used to construct the dorm capsules - thin wood that was very hollow, resulting in a deafening amplification of sound whenever your neighbours moved around you. If you're a light sleeper you might want to reconsider. But otherwise, it was awesome, I would go back again!

JJCtravellerThe hotel is equipped with an open air parking block of around 15 spaces, which I assume it's first come first serve basis. When we arrived on a monday night (Mid august) around 9pm to check in there was only one parking space left. Check in -and out are done in a compartment next to the parking spaces, self serviced on a tablet with quite a few language options (english, chinese....). Our room was spacious and even came equipped with a projector (poppin Alladin) which the kids enjoyed for watching movies. There was a laundry machine inside the room, with laundry detergent provided, and drying rack. Enough clean towels were provided for our family during the stay so we did not need to wash the towels. However as there was no in room housekeeping service, the litter processing was done by ourselves (perhaps the only inconvenience we found in living in this motel).

GGuest UserThe exterior of the hotel is pretty, but the interior of the hotel is dated and needs a bit of updating. There were parts of the hotel that were completely shut down (maybe there are saving up enough money to one day renovate). However the facilities and rooms are well maintained and the onsens are beautiful and peaceful. There are 2 main onsens, that are separated by men and women. Each day the onsens are switched, in the morning you will go to one, and in the evening before dinner you can experience the other onsen. Onsite there is a really nice restaurant and gift shop that featured local products at reasonable prices. There is a 24 hour coffee/tea station that is free to use. It's a short 10 minute walk from Kinugawa Onsen Station. When you arrive they provide you a yukata to wear while you are staying at the hotel. The rooms are spacious with options for a western bed or japanese style (sleeping on the floor). We opted for the western bed to be higher off the ground as we thought it would be colder to sleep on the ground. Although the rooms are very well heated and was a bit too warm, that we needed to open the window to cool the room down. The rooms have nice views of the countryside. They provide a pitcher of ice water in the room and you can go to the front desk to refill with ice if more is needed. The bathroom is quite large and has both a shower and toilet in a separate room of the bathroom; although we mostly bathed in the onsen. There is a 7-eleven nearby that was open 24 hours, but otherwise there isn't much else around the hotel. Also the town of Kinugawa Onsen closes quite early, around 8pm it's quite deserted. We were there at the end of November 2024, and it seemed that the hotel was mostly unoccupied, so we felt like we had the place to ourselves. It was a very nice one night stay.

玩转星球-KevinThe most important buffet dinner during the stay was served very late, and the dishes were often empty, which is very rare in Japan. Because it was less than 700 yuan and included two meals, although the hotel had many flaws, it was understandable, but the faucet in the room seemed to be broken, and the water flow was not smooth, which should be replaced. Overall, this room was acceptable.
