Spanish Pyrenees Hike ~ Huesca (Region) A declared a Historic-Artistic Site, the town of Aínsa features a harmonious old town that is striking for its dense, uniform rows of houses, the slender tower of the church and the massive castle walls (almost as large as the rest of the village). The surrounding walls have been almost completely preserved and are dotted with monuments dating back to the Middle Ages. Next to the square is the Romanesque Church of Santa Maria, which was built in the first half of the 11th century and has arcades on both sides. Here we can admire its façade, its fascinating basement and its tower that dominates the urban landscape. The monastery was built a little later, in the 13th century. In the northwest of the town center, a castle is preserved. It was originally a pentagonal tower built in the mid-11th century and incorporated into the defence system to face the Moorish threat.
