An open-air museum adjacent to the Acropolis of Athens

Just a 10-minute walk from Monastiraki Square leads you to the entrance of Philopappos Hill (Φιλοπάππου Λόφος; Philopappos Hill). Also known as the Hill of the Muses (Λόφος Μουσών; Hill of the Muses), it is located southwest of central Athens, right next to the Acropolis. Philopappos Hill is filled with ancient ruins, resembling an open-air museum, and is completely free to visit. Surprisingly, not many tourists are aware of this hidden gem. Philopappos' full name is Gaius Julius Antiochus Philopappos (Γάιος Ιούλιος Αντίοχος Φιλόπαππος; Gaius Julius Antiochus Philopappos), a Roman nobleman born in 65 AD. The hill is named after him. Philopappos lived in Athens for a time and contributed to various cultural and public projects, earning the admiration of the Athenians.
