Recommended Jazz Bars by a Pro Thailand Traveler

When the hot Southeast Asian sun sets and you feel reluctant to head back to your accommodation, why not explore a jazz bar? As a huge fan of Thailand, I've visited Chiang Mai and Bangkok multiple times and would like to recommend four jazz bars that left a lasting impression. 1. The North Gate Jazz Co-Op, Chiang Mai - As the name suggests, this jazz bar is located near the North Gate of Chiang Mai's Old Town. It's easy to find and conveniently close. On the first floor, you can purchase souvenirs like T-shirts with the North Gate logo and other charming goods. The performing bands change depending on the time of day. I arrived a bit early around 5 PM and found a performance happening on the fourth floor. I thoroughly enjoyed the show by a young and trendy band, which I later learned is quite famous among jazz enthusiasts, even having a dedicated fan following. After 7 PM, I went back downstairs to find another performance taking place on the first floor. The crowd filled the front yard, creating such an amazing atmosphere that I found it hard to leave. 2. Thapae East - Live Music Bar, Chiang Mai - I revisited Thapae East Jazz Bar after seven years because of the unforgettable memories I had there. It's a place where you can truly feel the soul of jazz. Seven years ago, I was mesmerized by the jazz melodies played by a silver-haired gentleman. The hippie-like woman, who seemed to be the owner, danced freely to the music, completely unbothered by others' gazes, creating an otherworldly vibe. That experience might have been the start of my love for jazz bars, even though I don't know much about jazz. My recent visit to Thapae East exceeded my expectations once again. A top-notch band, which had even released albums, played incredible music, making it a night where I couldn't tell if I was intoxicated by the drinks or the music. 3. Adhere The 13th Blues Bar, Bangkok - Known as a legendary spot among jazz enthusiasts, this small, old-school bar near the Banglamphu Market exudes an incredible aura. The staff may seem a bit cold at first, but they turn out to be surprisingly caring. On the day I visited, the first performance was by an elderly couple. Their skilled guitar playing, perfect harmony honed over decades, and heartfelt music and commentary left me deeply moved. It felt like a journey back in time—a charming jazz bar perfect for those who appreciate a nostalgic vibe. 4. Firefly Bar, Bangkok - Located within the Sindhorn Kempinski Hotel, this bar offers a more upscale experience. While the prices are higher and there's a dress code, the elegant interior, attentive service, and sophisticated performances made for an enjoyable evening. If you're looking to indulge in a bit of luxury in Bangkok, this is the place to go. The cocktails are also excellent.
