If you're visiting Chongqing (重庆) and looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city, consider marking your map for "Songgai Ancient Town" (松溉古镇). This small, tranquil ancient town is located along the Yangtze River in Jiangjin District (江津区). While it may not be as famous as other ancient towns, it possesses a deep and unexpected charm that feels warm and inviting. Stepping into Songgai Ancient Town feels like traveling back in time. The streets are paved with ancient stones, the two-story wooden buildings retain the architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the locals continue to live a simple, traditional lifestyle. Everything here exudes a sense of peace, quiet, and a comforting feeling of "home." On both sides of the streets, you'll find old tea houses, shops selling local snacks, and traditional handicrafts such as antique lanterns, wooden items, and beautifully patterned paper fans. Strolling leisurely to the riverside, you'll be greeted by a view of the Yangtze River stretching far and wide, with a vast sky above and wooden boats silently drifting by. It's the perfect spot to sit quietly, gaze into the distance, and truly relax. One of my favorite spots is the riverside pavilion and the small alleys covered with climbing plants, which are so picturesque they resemble scenes from a period film. You can also take a wooden boat ride along the river in the evening to watch the sunset reflecting on the water. Songgai Ancient Town is not flashy or hurried, but it is full of unique charm.
