Half-Day Trip to Enoshima – Don’t Miss the Caves!

Worried that the elderly might find it difficult to walk around Enoshima, I did some research beforehand and decided to use escalators for the entire uphill journey. At the entrance, I purchased the Enoshima 1-Day Pass for 1,100 yen per adult, which allows unlimited access to the Enoshima escalators, the Enoshima Sea Candle lighthouse, and the Iwaya Caves. There are plenty of attractions along the way. On the path to the Ryuren no Kane (Lovers’ Bell), I encountered a raccoon dog that seems to have been living there for a long time and occasionally comes out to greet visitors. Although the first part of the journey uphill is assisted by escalators, the path to the caves is a round trip on foot. The way there involves going downhill, while the return trip is uphill, so it’s important to assess your physical condition. If it feels too challenging, there are many restaurants nearby where you can take a break and enjoy Enoshima’s famous whitebait dishes. Upon reaching the interior of the caves, each visitor is given a candle, instantly enhancing the atmosphere. The candle features a dragon design, as the caves are dedicated to the worship of the dragon deity. You can return the candle before exiting the caves.
