This Beautiful and Ancient Lost City | The Place Where 007 Met His End

Matera, whose name means "rock caves" in Italian, is a city filled with approximately 3,000 habitable cave dwellings and 150 stone churches. Its unique landscape, shaped by limestone erosion, has created a distinctive cluster of "cave houses." Locals refer to these cave areas as "Sassi," meaning "stones." Matera is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities known to mankind, with a history dating back around 9,000 years to the Paleolithic era. Due to its long isolation from the outside world, Matera has been dubbed "the lost city of civilization" by Lonely Planet. It is considered one of the most significant prehistoric human settlement sites globally. In 2019, Matera was named the "European Capital of Culture." Its unique terrain and primitive charm have attracted numerous international film productions, including "007: No Time to Die" and "The Passion of the Christ." ➡️ Transportation You can fly or take a train to Bari and then drive to Matera. Vehicles are not allowed within the ancient city area, so you'll need to park outside and walk in. 🏨 Accommodation The ancient city is home to numerous "cave hotels," some of which are converted from original stone houses. Staying within the ancient city is highly recommended to experience the 9,000-year-old living culture. 🌟 Dining Located in southern Italy, Matera is known for its traditional pasta, olive oil, and seasonal ingredients. The ancient city boasts several restaurants that blend local flavors with modern design. Whether you choose a place with great design or stunning views, you're unlikely to encounter bad food here.

Sassi di Matera

Nestled in a small canyon carved by the Gravina River, this town was inhabited for thousands of years since the Palaeolithic times. In the prehistoric times, the local population started to settle in dwellings in the calcareous rock of the canyon itself that today are known as 'sassi'. Due to the extreme poverty conditions in the '50s, the government had to relocate most of its population to new housing in the modern part of the city. Thanks to a change in culture and in local administrators, the 'Sassi's' saw a renaissance in the early 90's and are now being promoted as touristic attractions. Over the last two decades, many economic activities have populated these dwellings: restaurants, pubs, shops, bed and breakfasts and luxury hotels. Today Matera is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today it is a must-stop for many tourists who travel across Southern Italy, especially after a stay in Apulia or Calabria.
