Before the Xia Dynasty in China, the Dongshan area where Pingyuan Ancient Town is located was inhabited by the oldest indigenous ethnic group in Guizhou—the Gelao people, whose leader was named Barui, also known as Bari, historically known as King Barui or the Barbarian King. The state he founded was based in Dongshan of Zhijin, writing a legendary and glorious era. Zhijin has a long history, belonging to Ba Prefecture during the Qin Dynasty, Zangke Prefecture during the Han Dynasty, and was ruled by the Yi people after the Jin Dynasty. It was known as Hui Zhou during the Tang Dynasty, Pina during the Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties, Pingyuan Zhou during the Qing Dynasty, and was renamed Zhijin in 1914 during the Republic of China. In 2011, Zhijin County was under Bijie City.
