I visited Dhaka three times in a month and a half on business trip. First of all, I was speechless at the terrible traffic jam. Disorderly, no signals, and no lanes. When walking through Old Dhaka, you get bumped into by people and it’s hard to walk. The air is also bad. To be honest, it’s definitely not a place to visit for a trip. The food is just okay at restaurants, but I absolutely do not recommend street food. And you have to use bottled water when brushing your teeth. I brought a shower filter and used it, but it turned yellow in just one day. It was shocking. And this country has… really… a ton of mosquitoes. I hope you bring mosquito repellent that you can apply on your body or spray. I came on a business trip and it was convenient because I had local partners, but if you’re only coming for a trip, I hope you do a lot of research in advance.

In Bengal, the British began to support the large landlord families that were close to them—the Khwaja family from Dhaka. This family originally migrated from the Kashmir region as merchants and, after a century of wealth accumulation, became one of the largest landlords in Bengal. In 1843, Queen Elizabeth of England granted the family patriarch Khwaja Alimullah the hereditary title of nawab and bestowed great privileges upon the family. Although they had no ruling power, the nawabs of Dhaka played an important role in the political ecology of Bengal and even South Asia at the time, and actively participated in the municipal construction of Dhaka during the British Indian period. The Ahsan Manzil Pink Palace is a symbol of the wealth and power of the nawabs of colonial Dhaka. Bangladesh is famous for being a chaotic city. When I actually visited, I found the cityscape to be just that.
